RESEARCH INTO
BILLBOARD
ADVERTISEMENTS
APRIL HIGGINS
There is a clear
representation
of the brand. It
is clear that
Pepsi is being
advertised as
their well
known colours
for the brand
red, white and
blue take up
the majority of
the
advertisement,
even on the
celebrity.
The main image is of Beyoncé, who is a well known celebrity which immediately
draws attention the billboard. She is also giving direct mode of address in the
photograph which helps connect the audience to the photograph and therefore the
product being advertised. The photograph of Beyoncé is also in black and white which
helps make the other colours (which represent the brand, Pepsi) stand out and grab
the audiences attention.
The font is bold and white, which helps it
stand out on the rest of the billboard,
therefore making it easy for people to
see the information whilst walking or
driving.
The text also helps
connect the
audience as it
personally
involving them. By
using phrases such
as “help kick off”.
The billboard states the brand name, the product name
and displays the product. This gives the audience a clear
idea of what is being advertised. The same font for the brand Chanel, is
used for every advertisement. This makes
it recognisable for the audience and
provides familiarity.The white text
naming the product
stands out against
the dark
background. The
font also stands
out from the rest of
the billboard,
again, making it
clear to the
audience what is
being advertised.
The main image is of the actress Kiera Knightley who is very well known and therefore may
immediately catch the audiences attention. The model is also using direct mode of address
which helps create a personal relationship with the audience. The main image relates to he
Uses and Gratifications theory as by using a well known actress the audience may be able to
connect to her, due to being familiar with her already, for example from her success in films, and
therefore be more interested in the product which is being advertised.
The main image is of ‘the joker’ which is one of the main/ most recognisable
characters in the film and will therefore immediately grab the audiences
attention, if they are familiar with the film. The actor in the photograph is also
using direct mode of address to create a personal relationship with the
audience.
The title ‘The Dark Night’ is the biggest piece of text on the billboard, making it stand
out from the rest of the text. The main logo of the film is also featured behind the text,
which again, clearly shows the audience what exactly is being advertised. This logo is
also the same logo which is used throughout every film of the Batman series and will
therefore be recognisable to the audience and create familiarity.
All of the text on this
billboard advertisement is
white and bold. The colour of
the text helps it stand out
against the blue background,
where as the boldness helps
the audience clearly see the
text whether they are driving
or walking.
All of the text used on the billboard is in bold, which makes it stand out and easy to
read. The title ‘Inception’ is the biggest piece of text on the billboard and is the only
font which is red. The red colour of this text also makes it stand out against the black
background. This makes it easy for the audience to identify what it is that is being
advertised.
By using the pull quote “one of the years best
films” it persuades the audience into seeing the
film, as they are given insight by a critic. The
audience can also be intrigued into going to
watch the film by the use off buzz words such
as ‘BEST’.
The advertisement has listed
the awards/nominations the
film has received which again
will intrigue the audience into
going to watch the film, due
the recognition it has
received.

doesn’t give too
much information
away about the
film, which may
entice the audience
as they will want to
find out more
information about
the film.
SUMMARY
When researching into billboard advertisements I have found
that the main image will feature the product to make it clear
to the audience what is being advertised.
The title of the product will usually stand out from the rest of
the product, which could be due to either the font or the
colour of the text.
The text will usually be bold and stand out to make it easy to
read for the audience.
There will be a clear colour scheme to the advertisement,
which keeps in tone with the product.
There will be more than one representation of the product,
for example Pepsi uses it’s brand colours throughout the
advertisement as well as it’s logo.
