2. We were flight to Jakarta around 09.00 local times, and we arrived two hours later in
Kemayoran Airport Jakarta. Major Dumyati, my father colleagues and his wife and his only one
son has already stand by in the Kemayoran Airport. He was rent a box car to bring my hall

A few days later, my father registered my to Junior High School, namely SMP Negeri XIV
(Government own State Junior High School Number 15) in Jatinegara areas, East Jakarta.
1970’s, the density of Jakarta only have a 4 millions peoples where the pedicab (tricycle) were
dominant mode transportations beside the public bus and small taxi car.
One of the most historic to my hall life was when I had attended a second year at Junior High
School, because on 15 January 1974, a riot broke out in Jakarta after a mass student protest
turned violent. That was my teacher give an announcement to the students that they had to return
their home earlier than the school time program to avoid any violent or any riots victims.
Malari incident was a mass student protest that turned into a riot where thousands of rioters set
fire to hundreds of vehicles and buildings in Jakarta. Malari is an acronym for Malapetaka Lima
Belas Januari or the Fifteenth January Disaster, since the event happened on 15 January 1974.
After Suharto was re-elected president in 1973, his popularity among the public was not as
strong as it was in 1967. There was a growing displeasure among the masses, especially among
the elites and the middle class. These included several top commanders within the armed forces
itself who openly criticized Suharto and his regime. All were disgusted with the increasing
corruption within his government, the amount of foreign investment in Indonesian economy, and
the power held by Suharto’s personal counselors (asisten pribadi/Aspri).
In 1973, students from various universities held a number of protests showing their strong
disagreement with the government regarding foreign investment. They also sounded their
3. opposition against foreign influence, poor economic condition and the spread of corruption
within the government.
By late 1973, General Soemitro, then head of Kopkamtib, Operational Command for the
Restoration of Security and Order, began holding talks in campuses to ease the students. On 30
November, several prominent persons, including former Vice-President Hatta, plainly criticized
the government’s policy in handling foreign investment in Indonesia.
On 14 January 1974, Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka visited Jakarta. Japan was then
Indonesia’s largest foreign investor, thus naturally making it the most hated country among those
opposed to foreign investment. The arrival of Tanaka became the pretext for students to hold
mass protests.
At first, the students gathered at Halim Perdanakusuma, but failed to enter the airport complex
since the security forces managed to secure the area.
Suddenly, and without warning, the protest turned violent after some protesters began to burn
and destroy Japanese-made vehicles and buildings throughout their march. The security forces
tried to hold back the protesters but to no avail. In all, the Malari incident leaved 11 people dead,
300 injured and 775 arrested. Hundreds of cars and buildings were burned and destroyed.
After the incident, Suharto took several critical steps to prevent further mass rebellion. He
dissolved the president’s private counselor institution and took over the commandership of
Kopkamtib himself. Thus, once and for all, putting an end the rivalry between Ali Murtopo and
Soemitro, which have caused much damaged to his regime during the last few years. He also
fired his chief intelligence, Soetopo Juwono, then head of Bakin, State Intelligence Coordination
Agency, and replaced him with Yoga Sugama.
A number of student leaders such as Syahrir and Hariman Siregar were brought to court. Most
public meetings were suspended and several newspaper and magazines were banned.
Senior High School or Senior Technical High School
4. When I passed Junior High School, I was confused that I should register to General Senior Hight
School or Vocational School of Technical High School. I had knew that My father could not
have a purchasing power to pay my University tuitions fee, after I pass the Senior High School,
because as a lower ranking sergeant with his ten kids were hard to him to feed and to pay our
school cost in a higher school institutions.
That was why my father registered me to enter a Vocational school of Senior Technical High
School in Lapangan Banteng Street, Central Jakarta. But, with my personal saving, I registered
my self to Senior High School in East Jakarta. So, in the Morning I was attended a Technical
High School and in the evening I was also attended a Senior High School.
Thanks to the change to the school time schedule from the December to June. The Education and
Culture Minister Dr.Daoed Joesoef release his degree about the time of School holidays and
schedule of student’s activities. In the last schedule, the end of semester was every December,
but started in 1978, the end of semester was started in June. Luckily, the change were only valid
for General School not for Vocational School, especially for Technical High School, because the
Minister said, the jobs market were badly needs a workers whose had a Technical High School
diploma. So, I took the state general examinations for Technical High School in December 1978,
and I took an examinations for Senior High School in June, 1979, because all School, especially
for non vocational school had an extended the length of time to study another six months. So,
that was why I was successfully to pass School, Senior High School and Vocational School of
Senior Technical High School.
