Basic Interactive Kyrgyz Language Lessons 
This course is based on such communicative functions as “informal and formal greetings”, “telling about oneself”, “expressing understanding”, “expressing likes/dislikes”, “expressing one’s opinion”, “asking for permission”, and “stating whether something is right or wrong.” 
While you are listening, the speaker is going to ask you to repeat the words, to reply to the questions, and to ask questions. 
Let’s start with Kyrgyz. (Note: the Alphabet and other phrases are included in this document at the end of these lessons. They are not covered, however, in the audio tracks.)

Lesson 1: Informal Greeting 
An informal way of greeting among young people is Са-лам! Са-лам! 
Which means “Hi!” Try to say it after the speaker.

You probably guessed the speakers’ names. А-сан and Ай-ша are common Kyrgyz names. А-сан is a boy’s name and Ай-ша is a girl’s name.

Lesson 2: Formal Greeting 
The formal way of greeting is Са-ла-мат-сыз-бы? Са-ла-мат-сыз-бы? 
Which means “good morning” or “good day” or “good evening”. It can be used any time of the day for greetings with elderly people, both male and female. 
Try to say it after the speaker. Speaker: Са-ла-мат-сыз-бы? ……………………? Speaker: Са-ла-мат-сыз-бы? ……………………? 
The reply is the same Са-ла-мат-сыз-бы? 
This is the polite greeting between two unfamiliar people. 
Listen to how these people greet each other.

But between a young person and an elderly man or woman on the street the, the reply is Са-ла-мат-чы-лык 
In this case a young person usually starts the greeting and the elderly person replies.

Like in informal greeting, to continue the conversation we say “кандайсыз?” Pay attention to the formal ending “сыз” which differentiates this word from an informal one.

To introduce yourself, you can say “Менин атым Жон” “My name is John” “Менин атым Эйми” “ My name is Amy.” 
“Ме-нин а-тым Жон” “Ме-нин а-тым Эйми” 
Say it after the speaker. First slowly then faster.

Lesson 4: Expressing Understanding/Misunderstanding 
When you have misheard someone or you misunderstand something, you can say, 
Ке-чи-ре-сиз тү-шүн-гөн жок-мун Ке-чи-ре-сиз тү-шүн-гөн жок-мун 
Which means, “Excuse me, I didn’t understand.” 
Try to say this phrase after the speaker.

Try to reply to Айша while talking to her. If you misunderstand something, say the phrase “Excuse me, I didn’t understand you.”

Another word to express misunderstanding is кайталаңыз, which means, “repeat please”

Basic Kyrgyz Language Course

  • 1. Basic Interactive Kyrgyz Language Lessons This course is based on such communicative functions as “informal and formal greetings”, “telling about oneself”, “expressing understanding”, “expressing likes/dislikes”, “expressing one’s opinion”, “asking for permission”, and “stating whether something is right or wrong.” While you are listening, the speaker is going to ask you to repeat the words, to reply to the questions, and to ask questions. Let’s start with Kyrgyz. (Note: the Alphabet and other phrases are included in this document at the end of these lessons. They are not covered, however, in the audio tracks.) Са-лам! Which means “Hi!” Try to say it after the speaker. a) Speaker: - Салам! b) Speaker: - Салам! - ……… - ………. Listen to how two friends greet. a) – Салам! b) – Салам Асан! - Салам! - Салам Айша! You probably guessed the speakers’ names. А-сан and Ай-ша are common Kyrgyz names. А-сан is a boy’s name and Ай-ша is a girl’s name. Let’s practice. Асан аnd Айша are going to greet you in turns. Listen and greet them. a) Асан: - Салам Жон! b) Айша: - Салам Жон! - …………….! - ……………!

Кан-дай-сың? Кан-дай-сың? Try to say it after the speaker. a) Speaker: - Кандайсың? b) Speaker: - Кандайсың? - ……………. - ……………. The usual reply is: Жакшы. Жак-шы. Жак-шы Which means “good” Sometimes the reply is жакшы, рахмат жак-шы, рах-мат жак-шы, рах-мат. Which means “good, thank you.” Repeat these words after the speaker. a) Speaker: - жакшы b) Speaker: - жакшы, рахмат. - ………….. - …………………. Now, greet with Айша. You start. - Салам Жон! ………………! - …………….! Салам Жон! - Кандайсың? …………………? - …………….. Жакшы, рахмат Lesson 2: Formal Greeting The formal way of greeting is Са-ла-мат-сыз-бы? Са-ла-мат-сыз-бы? Which means “good morning” or “good day” or “good evening”. It can be used any time of the day for greetings with elderly people, both male and female. Try to say it after the speaker. Speaker: Са-ла-мат-сыз-бы? ……………………? Speaker: Са-ла-мат-сыз-бы? ……………………? The reply is the same Са-ла-мат-сыз-бы? This is the polite greeting between two unfamiliar people. Listen to how these people greet each other. Speaker: Са-ла-мат-сыз-бы? Speaker: Са-ла-мат-сыз-бы? But between a young person and an elderly man or woman on the street the, the reply is Са-ла-мат-чы-лык In this case a young person usually starts the greeting and the elderly person replies. Listen to how a young man greets an elderly man: Young man: Са-ла-мат-сыз-бы? Elderly man: Са-ла-мат-чы-лык A young man greets an elderly woman. Young man Са-ла-мат-сыз-бы? Саламатчылык Like in informal greeting, to continue the conversation we say “кандайсыз?” Pay attention to the formal ending “сыз” which differentiates this word from an informal one. Kандайсыз? Now, say your name in Kyrgyz - …………………………… To ask someone’s name, you must say “Сиздин атыңыз ким?” Сиздин атыңыз ким? Try to say it after the speaker. Speaker: -Сиздин атыңыз ким?
