2. Narrative
• Story structure connotes a thriller/drama
• Focuses on two news reporters (shown in the beginning with an over
the shoulder shot/high angle shot), trying to uncover a story, that
gets them into trouble. From the context given (e.g. time escaping), it
creates a tense atmosphere that is seen in many thriller/drama
genres
• The themes include being targeted (the close up of the envelope
initiates this idea, including the diegetic sound getting more serious),
murder mystery (mise en scene plays a large role
throughout specifically when the protagonist is framed with the
setting, creating a sense of mystery with where they are going)
3. Characters
• Clear villain (guy in the mask, deep diegetic voice, connotes thriller)
close up of villain on the laptop, shows importance of character, as an
ark to the story
• Horror themes presented through picking off characters 'one by one'
• Clear protagonist has the will to stop this person, as his friend is in
trouble, shown through panicked mise en scene at 3 hours, knowing
his time is coming to an end
4. Setting
• The time frame is modern day, as the story line stays consistent, with
modern technology, and one of the main arks in the narrative is
through using modern technology (e.g. video message, memory
sticks, etc – good use of props)
• Office setting, helps with character identity of news reporters, good
to establish this at the beginning, but to keep the duration short, so
not too much is given away
• Setting changes through close up of writing on paper, and by using
match on action, the scene changes with good continuity to a house
with the same number 9 at the hour of 9, this creates a certain
importance around the number
5. Iconography
• Police tape at 0:29 connotes danger and themes of a thriller, or even
crime thriller
• Tense non-diegetic sound throughout
• Time escaping them, emphasized by the running clock in top right
hand of screen (done, so not to take away from the narrative), this
links up to a close up at then end of his watch, quite iconic of thrillers
• Flatline diegetic sound at 0:50, then with the match on action of the
other character rushing to his side (shown through a mid shot),
connotes urgency and the theme of running out of time
6. Style
• Lots of close ups, to show how the mise en scene of a
character/scene is trying to be expressed with the context given
• Fast in duration, so to emphasize the tense atmosphere and the
theme that their running out of time
• High key lighting, as perhaps want to take the film as far away from
camera work styles (e.g. low key lighting) associated with horror films
