EVALUATION; QUESTION 02
How does your media product represent certain social groups?
2. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
I have been asked the question, “how does your media
product represent particular social groups”. To answer
Brendon Allan | 30040996
this question I am going to be examining the magazine I
have created, in particular the people featured in that
magazine.
Before I begin this evaluation I will outline the social
group represented, I have chosen to represent the rock
social group/clique as I have produced a rock magazine. I
will now explain how this group has been represented
on the following slides.
3. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS? – FRONT COVER
Note first at how the model on the front of my magazine
is standing, he is seen looking at the camera with a
Brendon Allan | 30040996
slump, as if he doesn’t really care what is going on. This
is a typical rock attitude and it is a stance taken up by
many models featured on the front of similar music
magazines, see samples below;
4. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS? – FRONT COVER
As mentioned in the previous slide the cover model of
my magazine is displaying the typical vacant stare “I
don’t care” attitude. This is an attitude that has been
Brendon Allan | 30040996
stereotyped with the rock genre which is why I chose to
photograph the model in this way.
Next note the models appearance, he is shown with
long shaggy hair covering most of the head, this style is
very popular with the rock genre and “rockers” can
easily be identified by this hair style, In fact most
members of a band will go through this “thick” hair
stage. I have included samples of this on the following
page using various rock bands and artists;

6. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS? – CONTENT PAGE
Now that I have evaluated the model of the front page I
will evaluate the model from my content page. Like
Brendon Allan | 30040996
before note first at his stance, it is the typical side slump
camera focused “I don’t care” attitude as displayed by
the cover model. Although his stance may be a give
away to the magazine genre I chose to photograph this
model more for his features. Again he has the long
shaggy hair which can be so easily stereotyped with the
rock genre but more importantly the model has
snakebites. These are piercings that have become very
popular in the rock music genre and social cliques. A
large majority of bands and their fans have these as
shown on the following slide;

8. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS? – DOUBLE SPREAD
I will now show how the representation of rock has been
shown in my double spread page. I feel that the rock
Brendon Allan | 30040996
genre has been best represented in this page as it
features a real band, whom both play rock music and are
big fans of the genre.
As in the previous slides Ill start off by evaluating the
model stances. They can be seen playfully huddled
together, although this not a key feature of the rock
genre many rock bands take this stance when
photographed, the following slide shows example of this
huddling;

Now look at the appearance of each model, in particular
the model of the far right (drummer). When
Brendon Allan | 30040996
photographing the group I made sure to include the
drummers arm as it has been heavily tattooed. Tattoos
are one of the biggest stereotypes to be associated with
the rock genre. Many people believe that “oh, you’ve
got a tattoo, you must like rock music”. I have used this
to an advantage in my photographing. If you take the
time to look back at the photographs on my previous
slides you’ll be able to see that a lot of the rock bands
and artists shown are covered in tattoos. This is the
strongest representation of rock shown by my models.
11. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS? – CONCLUSION
Now I have given an evaluation of each model lets
recap. Each model featured in my magazine was chosen
Brendon Allan | 30040996
specifically as they strongly represent the rock genre
(ways in which have already been mentioned). My
magazine was indeed a rock magazine and had been
targeted at the rock audience, the selection of my
models was important in order to comply with the
restraints of a rock magazine. Long story short I believe
that my magazine has represented a various number of
rock stereotypes which helps its rock genre
identification. Although people may have different
opinions on stereotypes it is my opinion that none of the
stereotypes I have used are to be negative.
