Accessibility Champions
Ted Drake, Global Accessibility Leader – Intuit
January 16, 2020
“Does anyone here face serious burnout over the fight
to build inclusive services? Getting buy-in and creating a
culture of accessibility can be exhausting. I don’t want to
be the resident expert. I want to facilitate knowledge
and growth my having people in the teams around me
champion accessibility.”

Revisiting This Question
“Does anyone here face serious burnout over the fight to build
inclusive services? Getting buy-in and creating a culture of
accessibility can be exhausting. I don’t want to be the resident
expert. I want to facilitate knowledge and growth my having
people in the teams around me champion accessibility.”

Editor's Notes

  1. This presentation was created for the Accessibility Online webinar series https://www.accessibilityonline.org/ada-tech/session/?id=110775
  2. This comment was left within the web-a11y slack channel. I’ve left the name anonymous. This is a common frustration, as we work hard to make changes, but many times it seems like we are making progress, but never seeing the finish line.
  3. This problem statement should resonate with every organization. We all need to broaden our influence, create delightful products, and have limited budgets.
  4. This is the Intuit Accessibility Champion mission statement.
  5. Learn more about the accessibility champion program: http://www.last-child.com/intuits-accessibility-champion-program/ This includes a detailed list of tasks required to become a champion
  6. Many companies start at the second level and their champions have accessibility as part of their job description. This is typical of a company with a large, distributed accessibility team. Intuit has a small, centralized team. Establishing an active community and tying accessibility to customer obsession was more important.
  7. The tasks required for becoming a champion can be found on this page: Intuit’s Accessibility Champion Program http://www.last-child.com/intuits-accessibility-champion-program/ The disability etiquette video should be required viewing for everyone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gv1aDEFlXq8&feature=youtu.be
  8. The tasks required for becoming a champion can be found on this page: Intuit’s Accessibility Champion Program http://www.last-child.com/intuits-accessibility-champion-program/ The disability self-disclosure form is for American employees and is managed via their Workday profile. This is anonymous and we do not track this step. Magical Bridge is an inclusive park near our headquarters in Mountain View. We also encourage visiting other parks around the world. Intuit has empathy stations in various locations that use computers and equipment to experience a simulation of low-vision and limited mobility. Training sessions are provided for designers, developers, product managers, customer care, and general topics, such as globalization and accessibility. 9. The tasks required for becoming a champion can be found on this page: Intuit’s Accessibility Champion Program http://www.last-child.com/intuits-accessibility-champion-program/ The following Chrome Plugins are installed: Axe Microsoft Accessibility Insights ChromeLens No Coffee Wave Chrome’s Lighthouse is used for the first audit. 94 issues have been created during the champion process. At least ½ have been closed. The closed data requires manual testing and is not up to date. Photo: https://www.flickr.com/photos/draket/48483687347/in/album-72157652662208736/
  10. Many of our champions are able to complete the required tasks during a workshop. We see about 30% of attendees follow through with the champion process. A contest was held for designers to create a tshirt. The results were fantastic and the Corgi was the first design to be printed.
  11. Level 2 Champion Tasks could be completed within a short time, but it typically takes 4 months to schedule and complete each task. There’s a slack channel for people working on becoming a level 2 to share their tips and challenges Training courses take 1-2 hours and there are options for Development, Design, and General Accessibility. Intuit uses Deque University, Teach Access Tutorial, and curated video playists. Auditing a project could be a web application. But it could also be a design framework, employment onboarding, customer care process, or whatever is appropriate for the person’s role. Intuit partnered with Disability Matters to create a one hour presentation on disability etiquette that is available within our internal training platform
  12. Level 3 Champions are the core team. They provide the central guidance across the company and have responsibilities, not just to their work and their team. But also for driving accessibility across the larger business units, the company, and across our customer base. Becoming a level 3 champion is more than completing tasks, it’s a journey. The key success task is IAAP Certification. Photo: https://www.flickr.com/photos/draket/48914831312/in/album-72157711286175397/
  13. Level 3 Developers are responsible for ensuring our products have automated testing across the development life cycle, are managing tickets, voice of the customer, and manually auditing products to ensure an inclusive experience.
  14. The Department of Defense has a series of videos to teach disability etiquette https://www.cap.mil/NewsEvents/Training.aspx?enc=ZfHdZr4QCcD7QC3PHylR3pdl1AU6r4LqVvWVDA5btvc=

  16. Photo: https://www.flickr.com/photos/draket/44577127322/in/album-72157699647048621/ Ace Vu is a great example of how the Accessibility Champion program provides an opportunity for people to grow and make a greater impact
  17. Open contribution means someone can fix code that belongs to another team. This has significantly increased accessibility updates
