CIGARETTE
• A cigarette (French "small cigar", from cigar + -ette)
is a small roll of finely-cut tobacco leaves wrapped in
a cylinder of thin paper for smoking.
History
The earliest forms of cigarettes were similar to
their predecessor, the cigar. Cigarettes appear
to have had antecedents in Mexico and Central
America around the 9th century in the form of
reeds and smoking tubes. The Maya, and later
the Aztecs, smoked tobacco and various
psychoactive drugs in religious rituals and
frequently depicted priests and deities smoking
on pottery and temple engravings. The
cigarette and the cigar were the most common
methods of smoking in the Caribbean, Mexico
and Central and South America until recent
times.
MANUFACTURING
Commercially manufactured cigarettes are
seemingly simple objects consisting mainly of a
-
 Tobacco blend,
 Paper,
 Glue to bond the outer layer of paper together,
and
 Often also a cellulose acetate–based filter.
1. Filter made of 95% cellulose acetate.
2. Tipping paper to cover the filter.
3. Rolling paper to cover the tobacco.
4. Tobacco blend.
TOBACCO BLEND
 The process of blending, gives the end product a
consistent taste from batches of tobacco grown in
different areas of a country that may change in
flavor profile from year to year due to different
environmental conditions.
PAPER
 The paper for holding the tobacco blend may vary
in porosity to allow ventilation of the burning ember
or contain materials that control the burning rate of
the cigarette and stability of the produced ash.
FILTER
 This helps in reducing the amount of nicotine that
goes along with the smoke to the person’s body is
made up of cellulose fibers which are very fine.

BEEDI
 A beedi is a thin, Indian
cigarette filled with tobacco
flake and wrapped in atendu or
possibly even Piliostigma
racemosum leaf tied with a
string at one end. The name is
derived from
the Marwari word beeda — a
leaf wrapped in betel nuts,
herbs, and condiments.
HERBAL CIGARETTE
 Herbal cigarettes are cigarettes that do not
contain any tobacco, instead being composed of
a mixture of various herbs and/or other plant
material. Such cigarettes are not to be confused
with non-additive or natural tobacco cigarette
varieties.
MENTHOL CIGARETTE
 A menthol cigarette is
a cigarette flavoured with the
compound menthol, a
substance which triggers the
cold-sensitive nerves in
the skin without actually
providing a drop in
temperature.
KRETEK
 Kretek /ˈkrɛtɛk/ are cigarette
made with a blend
of tobacco, cloves and other
flavours. The word "kretek"
itself is an onomatopoetic term
for the crackling sound of
burning cloves.
ELECTRONIC CIGARETTE
 An electronic cigarette, personal
vaporizer or electronic nicotine delivery
system is a battery-powered vaporizer which
feels similar to tobacco smoking. Electronic
cigarettes produce an aerosol, commonly
called vapour, rather than cigarette smoke.
CIGAR
Cigar is a tightly rolled bundle of dried and
fermented tobacco.
History
Explorer Christopher Columbus is generally
credited with the introduction of tobacco to
Europe. Three of Columbus's crewmen during
his 1492 journey, Rodrigo de Jerez, Hector
Fuentes and Luis de Torres, are said to have
encountered tobacco for the first time on the
island of Hispaniola, in what is present
day Dominican Republic, when natives
presented them with dry leaves that spread a
peculiar fragrance. His sailors reported that
the Taínos on the island of Cuba smoked a
primitive form of cigar, with twisted, dried
tobacco leaves rolled in other leaves such as
