This document summarizes a proof of concept (PoC) that demonstrated orchestrated, virtualized SD-WAN services from multiple vendors. The PoC showed how SD-WAN services from different providers could be selected independently of hardware through a unified marketplace and portal. It used a common uCPE platform and NFV-based orchestration to automate service provisioning and lifecycle management in alignment with MEF standards. This unified approach reduces complexity and manual intervention compared to current disconnected SD-WAN solutions.

Participating organizationsDescription of PoC
Demonstrates the next innovation in SD-WAN, which accelerates the
adoption of multi-vendor SD-WAN and value-added services
through automated operations and a new digital user experience.
Powered by a unified marketplace, self-service portal and NFV-
based uCPE platform, MEF 70 compliant SD-WAN services from
different vendors can be selected independently of the CPE
hardware and seamlessly deployed with little-to-no intervention
from the service provider or end-user. Through this new “digital user
experience”, SD-WAN services are orchestrated, activated, assured
and managed using zero touch provisioning and end-to-end service
automation in alignment with MEF’s LSO framework.

PoC story
Service providers need to offer enterprise
customers their choice of SD-WAN and
VAS services from multiple vendors.
However, current SD-WAN solutions are
highly complex and time consuming to
deploy and configure, requiring manual
intervention from specialized engineers and
significant BSS/OSS customization.
Additionally, current solutions make it
difficult for enterprises to change SD-WAN
vendors in the future without “fork-lifting”
the previous solution.

SIGNIFICANCE
2
INSPIRATION
NTT Communications’ SD-WAN offering has more
than 5 vendors deployed in multiple continents by
different teams. The complexity of their offer
motivated them to form this PoC group to unify and
automate multiple vendor solutions (from Versa,
Silver Peak and NEC) with a single orchestration
platform from Netcracker, common uCPE platform
and management from ADVA and offer a choice of
MEF 70 services (validated by Spirent)
through an intuitive portal from Netcracker.
4
ACTION NEEDED
SD-WAN vendors need to achieve MEF 70
compliance and provide LSO Presto
enabled north bound interfaces on their
SD-WAN controllers, implementing MEF’s
Service Model (MSM) for SD-WAN.
Orchestration vendors need to provide
LSO Presto southbound interfaces and
LSO Legato northbound to BSS systems.

WITHOUT
THIS POC
The managed SD-WAN
services market will grow far
more slowly hampered by
fragmentation, operational
complexity and the inability
to meet the rapidly changing
needs of enterprises.
Service providers will increase their
ability to differentiate in the highly
competitive SD-WAN market by
offering their customers maximum
freedom in choosing SD-WAN
solutions anywhere in the world
through an online marketplace
whilst maximizing operations
efficiency with service lifecycle
automation.
