In versions up to Word 2003, using the command =rand()
and in Microsoft Office Word 2007 and later using the command =rand.old() ,
what can be achieved ?

IoT- Origin of the Term
A British tech pioneer is credited for coining the
term Internet of Things .
Kevin Ashton
I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure the phrase "Internet of Things" started
life as the title of a presentation I made at Procter & Gamble (P&G) in 1999.
Linking the new idea of RFID in P&G's supply chain to the then-red-hot topic
of the Internet was more than just a good way to get executive attention - -

IoT & Smart Cities
• Smart Cities Mission is a 5 year program started by the Government of India to develop 100 cities all over
the country making them citizen friendly & sustainable.
• In December of 2016, the important announcement regarding the inclusion of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal
Corporation (PCMC) in the Smart Cities Mission was made.
• Ask not what the country can do for you , but ask what you can do for the country - John F. Kennedy
So how does one go about a smart city implementation ?
The three main points in getting started
• Data collection & Pattern Finding
• S – S – S – S i.e. Start Small & then Scale the Solution
• C 4 Collaboration ( Citizens , Colleges ,Corporates & Civic authorities )

IoT & Smart Cities
Data Collection & Pattern Finding
• The first step would involve gathering all the possible data for the problem at hand .
• This activity is the building block of the IoT implementation. Trends and patterns will have to be derived from the huge amount
of data collected.
• It is important to note that data is an every growing entity hence the data models will have to grow & evolve.
E.g: For understanding purposes , Lets consider Hinjewadi – phase 1 as the location for the pilot implementation .
• Data Collection for the ‘Intelligent Transportation system’ problem would include
• Collecting info on the number of buses – company , private , government , school etc , individual vehicle owners , rickshaws etc
plying each day.
• Collecting info on the frequency of these vehicles plying , the commuter capacity ,the peak travel times , the volumes of inbound ,
out bound traffic.
• Understanding the signal controls in this area.
• Applying data algorithms to derive meaningful patterns of traffic data .

IoT & Smart Cities
Start small & then scale the solution
Since the volume of data for any problem statement would be large , starting small and then scaling it up
for additional towns ,cities would be the way to go.
Learnings from the pilot implementation can be adapted in the next bigger implementation.
Dividing the problem statements into multiple individual smaller scenarios will help
Eg : Again lets consider the problem statement : Traffic situation in Hinjewadi -phase 1
This can be broken down into smaller scenarios to implement a more granular solution.
1) Vehicular traffic congestion in Hinjewadi
2) Adaptive Traffic signal posts
3) Parking spot solutions
4) Street Light – usage etc.

IoT & Smart Cities
C 4 Collaboration ( Citizens , Colleges ,Corporates & Civic authorities )
• A Successful Smart City implementation depends immensely on the collaboration between Corporates ,
Colleges ,Citizens & Civic Authorities .
• The Academia & Corporates can use these scenarios for establishing final year projects . Campus to
corporate programs can become fruitful with these live projects.
• The college students can also act as beta users /testers of the final solution .
• The civic authorities and citizens can connect on regular basis to discuss the problems and the solutions
suggested , implemented .
• A crowd source solution would definitely have a wider coverage of the problems at hand.
• RFID & Sensor technology form the core of many IoT solutions . Beginner courses /sessions on these topics
for citizens can help us make a Smart City with Smart Citizens

IoT & Smart Cities
Simple scenarios for pilot implementation
1) Adaptive Traffic signal posts
• Based on the changing /increasing traffic patterns , the data from the sensors will be transmitted to a
centralized system and the signal timings can be adjusted during peak traffic hours .
• In case of ambulances handling emergency cases , these adaptive traffic signal post across the entire route
can be managed to prioritize the commute of these vehicles
2) Automatic Toll collection across highways :
• The toll systems ( RFID/Sensor based) can detect the incoming traffic and deduct the toll amount at each
toll point across the national highways from the smart cards within the cars.
• The total volume of toll collected can be referenced from the centralized systems .
• This will result in no queues at toll posts & no fuel wastage for the citizen waiting in the toll queues.

IoT & Assistive Domotics
• Assistive domotics for senior citizens is another area where IoT is making progress .
• It is part of the home automation technologies but with focus on the needs of senior citizens .
• The University of Florida has built a smart house that is designed in such a way that it helps provide medical care
to "Matilda", a life size mannequin & is working on technologies that would aid senior citizens to live an
independent life .

Conclusion :
• The spectrum of IoT Business Solutions is a very vast area with immense positive benefits.
• Its time to reap the benefits of this technology for a better living for our city & for our country .
