The fire is guessed to have originated from the short- circuit, engulfed the adjoining rooms
including the store rooms that were laden with goods. As soon as the fire broke out, panic
spread among the workers most of whom were girls. They tried to get down from the stairs in a

Risky but Important Bridge
Staff reporter; The Daily Star; Gazipur;21 March 2013:
The bridge on the river of Turag near Prottasha is a very important one for the
people of this locality.
There are about fifteen thousand people live in Mudafa. Many people including
students have to cross this river every day. Moreover, most of the people of this
locality work in the garments factory and every day they have to cross the river
Turag by using Prottasha brigde. It had been built in 1994 but now it is very risky
to use. The railing of the bridge is almost shattered. The pillars of the bridge seem
to be good but the connection road of the bridge is severely damaged. So some
repairing work might ensurethe safeuse of this bridgefor few more years.
One of the local people said that very often people fall from the bridge into the
river when it becomes over crowded. It causes injuries to them but it is life
threatening for thosewho cannotswim.
The local Chairman knows this problem and seems to be indifferent about the
matter. So, the people of this locality think that a little attention of the higher
authority for the repairing of this bridge can ensurethe safeuse of this bridge.
