Why learn English
Adverb of frequency:
Adverbs of Frequency are Adverbs of Time that answer the
question "How frequently or How often something happens?“
Adverbs of frequency are often used with the present simple
because they indicate repeated or routine activities.
For example:
1. He always comes to college late.
2. She usually goes to bed at 12 pm.
3. I talk to him over phone often.
4. Kamal visits his uncle frequently.
5. I warned him twice.
6. He comes here sometimes.
Grammar/ Structure
7/30/2014Unit3:LearningEnglish 18
Lesson:2
Why learn English The Position of the Adverb
An adverb of frequency goes before a main verb
(except with To Be).
An adverb of frequency goes after the verb To Be.
7/30/2014Unit3:LearningEnglish 19
Subject + adverb + main verb
I always remember to do my homework.
He normally gets good marks in exams.
Subject + to be + adverb
They are never pleased to see me.
She isn't usually bad tempered
Lesson:2
Why learn English The Position of the Adverb
When we use both auxiliary verb (have, will, must,
might, could, would, can, etc.) & main verb, the
adverb is placed between the auxiliary and the
main verb. This is also true for to be verb.
7/30/2014Unit3:LearningEnglish 20
Subject + auxiliary + adverb + main verb
She can sometimes beat me in a race.
I would hardly ever be unkind to someone.
They might never see each other again.
They could occasionally be heard laughing.
Lesson:2

Lesson:2
Why learn English Probable Answer
What do you understand by ‘first language’?
Name at least five countries where English is
the first language.
First language means the mother tongue of
any person.
The names of five countries where English is
the first language are United States of
America, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia
and New Zealand.
7/30/2014Unit3:LearningEnglish 27
Lesson:2
Why learn English Probable Answer
What is a ‘second language’? Name some
countries where English is used as a second
language.
A second language is one which is not one’s
mother tongue but used widely as a medium of
communication.
English is second language in India and
Singapore.
7/30/2014Unit3:LearningEnglish 28
Lesson:2
Why learn English
Is English a ‘second’ or ‘foreign’
language in Bangladesh? Give reasons.
In Bangladesh English is a foreign language
like French, German and Arabic. Because in
Bangladesh English is not used widely but it
is used only for communication in specific
situations, especially in the private sectors.
Moreover we do not know the language well
and think it to be difficult to use.
Probable Answer
7/30/2014Unit3:LearningEnglish 29
Lesson:2
Why learn English
Why is English so important as an international
language?
English so important as an international language because-
o Higher studies anywhere in the world are mostly offered in
English.
o More than 80% of all the information in the world’s
computers is in English.
o Most of the world trade and commerce is conducted in
English.
o All international seminars and symposia and conferences
use English as a medium of presentation.
Probable Answer
7/30/2014Unit3:LearningEnglish 30
Lesson:2
Why learn English Text
Statistics show that about 350 million people speak English as a first
language and another 300 million use it as a second language. It is
the official or semi-official language in more than 60 countries and of
many international organisations. The International Olympic
Committee, for example, always holds meetings in English. English
helps the international community and the business world to
communicate across national borders. Today, more than 80% of all
the information in the world's computers is in English, so
organisations frequently need employees who speak and write a
standard form of English. In fact some companies provide English
language training for their staff. It is therefore little wonder that job
advertisements nowadays often ask for a 'good working knowledge'
of English. Many believe now that English usually helps them to get
good jobs and better salaries.

It is the official or semi-official language in more than 60 countries and of many international organisations. The International Olympic Committee, for example, always holds meetings in English. English helps the international community and the business world to communicate across national borders. Today, more than 80% of all the information in the world's computers is in English, so organisations frequently need employees who speak and write a standard form of English. In fact some companies provide English language training for their staff. It is therefore little wonder that job advertisements nowadays often ask for a 'good working knowledge' of English.
