7. ACHIEVEMENTS
• UPA's India cut poverty at the fastest rate in its history by moving 138
million above the same poverty line used by the World Bank (and China).
This was under Congress rule from 2004-5 to 2011-12 (7 years).
• The UPA doubled the electricity production in India from 1,12,700 MW in
2004 to 2,34,600 MW in 2014.
• India's GDP growth rate under UPA was always 8%+ from 2004 till mid-
2010, except for a dip during the global recession, when the easy credit
dried up, and except for the times the BJP started stalling Parliament.
• India arrived on the world stage with several major deals - India–United
States Civil Nuclear Agreement, the 2004 Border Defense Protocol with
China. Internally too, the RTI act increased the perception of transparency.
• India saw a massive reduction in internal insurgencies under UPA rule -
namely Naxalite–Maoist insurgency (this map was twice as "Red" in 2007).
