5. INTRODUCTION
Extraction of teeth followed
by continuous ridge resorption
and poor denture foundation
Loss of periodontal receptors
responsible for proper masticatory function and
accurate jaw movements Retention of few
remaining teeth to support denture will preserve
alveolar bone & preserve periodontal receptors
6. DEFINITION
Over denture, An removable
partial denture or complete
denture that covers & rests
on one or more remaining natural teeth, the
roots of natural teeth, and /or dental implants
7. ADVANTAGES OF OVER DENTURE
Helps reduce shrinkage of surrounding bone
Reduces pressure to portions of the alveolar ridge
Positive psychological advantage of still having teeth
Support – Stability- Retention
Preservation of alveolar hone
Feels more like having teeth
More retentive in many cases
Patient acceptance………….
8. DISADVANTAGES OF OVER DENTURE
May cause attrition of teeth
Meticulous oral hygiene is required
Bony undercuts
Require special material & attach material
More bulky than fixed or removable partial dentures
Periodontal breakdown of the abutment teeth
Caries susceptibility
More expensive.

12. ABUTMENTS SUPPORTED OVERDENTURES
According To Time Of Placement
It is an overdenture that constructed
for insertion immediately after the
removal of natural teeth. It is
constructed for patient with a full complement of
natural teeth most of which are to be lost. The teeth
chosen as abutments are reduced on the cast and the
over denture constructed and placed on the day of
extraction
IMMEDIATE OVER DENTURE
13. ABUTMENTS SUPPORTED OVERDENTURES
According To Time Of Placement
transition or preparation phase until
permanent over denture constructed
Patient old partial denture can be
modified & used by extending the denture and add new
artificial teeth using self-cure acrylic resin
INTERIM OVER DENTURE
14. ABUTMENTS SUPPORTED OVERDENTURES
According To Time Of Placement
A remote overdenture is an overdenture constructed for
insertion at some time "remote" from the removal of
hopeless teeth. It is placed over well-healed residual
ridges, usually after a period of satisfactory experience
with an interim overdenture, which can be immediate or
transitional overdenture. Remote overdentures can be
constructed entirely of resin; metal bases are frequently
used to increase rigidity and strength
REMOTE OR DEFINITIVE OVER DENTURE
15. CLASSIFICATION OF OVERDENTURES
ABUTMENT SUPPORTED OVERDENTURES
Selected tooth abutments are reduced to
a coronal height of 2 to 3 mm. and then
contoured to a convex or dome shaped surface.
Most teeth required endodontic therapy and in final step
are prepared conservatively to receive an amalgam or
composite type restoration
A - NON COPING ABUTMENTS
16. CLASSIFICATION OF OVERDENTURES
ABUTMENT SUPPORTED OVERDENTURES
• Cast metal coping with a dome
shaped surface and a chamber finishline
at the gingival margin are fabricated and cemented
B - ABUTMENTS WITH COPINGS
1.Short Cast Copings
2 . Long Cast Coping
TYPES
17. CLASSIFICATION OF OVERDENTURES
ABUTMENT SUPPORTED OVERDENTURES
Attachments are small precision devices. Objective is to
improve retention of denture base Most attachments
are secured to abutment by a cast coping..
Consists of two parts
Male
Female
C – ABUTMENT WITH ATTACHMENTS
18. CLASSIFICATION OF OVERDENTURES
ABUTMENT SUPPORTED OVERDENTURES
Doesn’t allow movement of
denture base Provide adequate retention May induce more
torque on abutment
Allows some control of
movements. Induces less
torque on abutments.
C – ABUTMENT WITH ATTACHMENTS
Rigid attachment
Resilient attachment

TYPES OF ATTACHMENTS
19. CLASSIFICATION OF OVERDENTURES
ABUTMENT SUPPORTED OVERDENTURES
Consists of 2 parts
usually attached to metal
coping cemented over prepared abutment
embedded in the fitting
surface of overdenture
OVER-DENTURE ATTACHMENT
1 Stud attachment
The Stud
Housing
20. CLASSIFICATION OF OVERDENTURES
ABUTMENT SUPPORTED OVERDENTURES
The stud is attached to the metal coping
cemented over the prepared abutment,
while the housing is embedded in the fitting
surface of the denture
OVER-DENTURE ATTACHMENT
1 Stud attachment
Extra-radicularA
21. CLASSIFICATION OF OVERDENTURES
ABUTMENT SUPPORTED OVERDENTURES
The stud is attached to the fitting surface
of the denture and the housing is
incorporated in the abutment.
OVER-DENTURE ATTACHMENT
1 Stud attachment
Intra-RadicularB
22. CLASSIFICATION OF OVERDENTURES
ABUTMENT SUPPORTED OVERDENTURES
A bar contoured to connect abutment teeth together ,
run parallel & overlie residual ridge Provide support &
retention for overdenture & splint abutment teeth Bars
may be in form of preformed metal or plastic
OVER-DENTURE ATTACHMENT
2 Bar attachment
23. CLASSIFICATION OF OVERDENTURES
ABUTMENT SUPPORTED OVERDENTURES
Rigidly fixed to copings, don’t allow
any movement between bar & sleeve Transmits
occlusal stresses totally to abutments “tooth born
Resilient attachments allowing
movement between bar & sleeve
Support provided by both residual ridge &
abutment teeth “tooth tissue born
OVER-DENTURE ATTACHMENT
2 Bar attachment
Bar units
Bar joint
24. CLASSIFICATION OF OVERDENTURES
ABUTMENT SUPPORTED OVERDENTURES
Small, strong mini magnets
One of poles cemented in a prepared
cavity in endodontically treated abutment
&the other attached to denture base
OVER-DENTURE ATTACHMENT
3 Magnetic attachment
25. CLASSIFICATION OF OVERDENTURES
2-IMPLANT SUPPORTED OVERDENTURES
A removable implant overdenture is a prosthesis which
is removable by the patient and is supported
or retained by dental implants
The prosthesis has to be removed
for the purpose of cleaning around
the abutments
26. CLASSIFICATION OF OVERDENTURES
2-IMPLANT SUPPORTED OVERDENTURES
In the mandible a minimum of 2 implants
In the maxilla a minimum of 4 implants
are indicated for this type of an overdentur
The attachments give retention to the prosthesis.
In eating, the ridge receives masticatory forces
The tissue supported implant overdenture is useful in cases
where the presenting problem is that of denture movement
TYPES OF IMPLANT OVERDENTURES
Tissue implant supported1
27. CLASSIFICATION OF OVERDENTURES
2-IMPLANT SUPPORTED OVERDENTURES
In the mandible a minimum of 4 implants
In the maxilla a minimum of 4/6 implants
During mastication, the attachment assembly transfers all the
masticatory forces to the supporting implants
This type of implant overdenture is particularly appropriate for
patients who present with considerable functional difficulty and
pain while functioning on their dentures.
TYPES OF IMPLANT OVERDENTURES
Fully implant supported2
