Introduction
11. We do not get better by chance,
we do get better by change
THINK FORWARD STRATEGY
ING’s purpose is to empower
people to stay a step ahead in life
and in business. To continue
doing this in the platform age we
must be where our customers
are: on digital platforms. Our own
and those of others. Offering one
consistently superior ING
experience, instant and
borderless. To do this we have to
break down our own borders and
become one united ING.
ING also has a dreamer
12. Ralph Hamers

Ultimately we want to completely
unite ING. Offering one single
empowering experience to people
and businesses around the world.

IT Architecture is quite similar to real Building Architecture. Similar characteristics, in terms of
area, scoping, usage, time aspects. At the end, an architect is an architect…

30. ENTERPRISE LEVEL
ING ARCHITECTURE
This is ING Logical Application
Architecture (LAA) bank reference
blueprint. It depicts all logical
components (groups of functionalities),
organised in distinct functional domains
and layers.
It serves as template for communicating
any result of IT assessment (heatmaps),
describing any process execution (flows)
or identify new IT components
(enablers) to put in place or to replace
old technologies …

31. ENTERPRISE LEVEL
ING ARCHITECTURE
This is ING Business Framework (IBF)
bank reference blueprint. It depicts all
business capabilities, each one further
detailed in process groups, channels
types, customer segments, product
families ...
It serves as template for communicating
any result of business assessment
(heatmaps), describing impact or
maturity of certain business processes,
or identify new business capabilities
(marketplace) to put in place …

32. DOMAIN LEVEL
ING ARCHITECTURE
IT Domain Reference
Area Scope Usage Date & Duration
Target
This is the Target Architecture
for a well determined domain. It
covers the whole domain.
As such it plays the role of
detailed reference blueprint for
that domain.
33. DOMAIN LEVEL
ING ARCHITECTURE
IT Domain Reference
Area Scope Usage Date & Duration
Target
The same Target Architecture for
a well determined domain can
then be used to depict which
technologies are / will be used
where. It also allows to indicate
where there are still architecture
decisions to be taken.
E.g.
- DB2 vs. Oracle ?
- Neo4j vs. DataStax Graph ?
34. DOMAIN LEVEL
ING ARCHITECTURE
IT Domain Solution
Area Scope Usage Date & Duration
Target
Reference Baseline
When depicting a particular
solution to a specific problem
(e.g. the red arrows), we are
depicting a Solution
Architecture.
To draw this solution
architecture, we may make use
of the reference architecture of
this domain at this moment: the
Baseline Architecture.
35. ENTERPRISE LEVEL
ING ARCHITECTURE
Business Enterprise Solution
Area Scope Usage Date & Duration
Roadmap
Finally, at the time we want
to depict the evolution
between the baseline and
the target architecture,
showing how particular IT
components may evolve or
specific business capabilities
may mature, we are using IT
or Business Roadmaps.
These may be strategic
(covering several years) or
execution (covering the next
quarters/months).
36. ARCHITECTURE TOOLBOX
Capgemini Integrated Architecture
Framework (IAF) is the Architecture
Content Framework used by ING for
documenting architecture solutions.
TOGAF Architecture
Development Process is the
method followed for deriving the
correct architecture solutions.
38. Evolution of architecture is a long journey … that never ends !
Many roles enter the play at different moments, for different purposes.

HOW: The role of Architecture in the Enterprise (processes)
>> The purpose of Enterprise Architecture will not change; it’s the way we do EA will change…..
Holistic outside in perspective (Drawing):
• Understanding of the relationship between Business
Strategy, IT Development (innovation) and Operations.
• Knowledge and understanding of trends in the IT- and
Banking industry and developments create opportunities
and threats for ING’s strategy.
• Initiate long term IT transition, like Digital Real Time
strategy, Data Lake, SOA/API, TPA,…
• Provide guidance on 3 different Time Horizons
Intra-Enterprise perspective (Structuring
- Planning):
• Decompose the Enterprise in Domains and Components,
based on cohesion, for optimization by providing
Frameworks; not loosing the required holistic consistency
of the enterprise.
• Manage the current and planned application portfolio for
its dependencies and lifecycle by means of Roadmaps.
• Safeguard the Enterprise by providing Data Consistency
and Security Principles for the Domains and Components.
Creating Guidance (Guiding):
• Foundation for developers decisions and considerations
while creating working software.
• Providing Guidance on Availability, Security, Consistency
build patters by means of CookBooks (an Arch+Eng
creation); based on ING and Industry best practices.
• Provide high level Solution Architectures for new
Components as a Reference Architecture.
• Easy to consume Standards as code or binary primitives
facilitating ING strategy.
• In cooperation with the DevOps community, define
Development, Deployment and Test patterns.
Giving Guidance (Verifying):
• Providing a Fast Experience Design approach for
Developers fast tracking the process ‘Discover- Define-
Design-Deliver’ in a consistent and future proof way.
• Facilitate Developers when needed in applying the
CookBook patterns.
• Close the Loop ensuring that code is developed compliant
to the architecture and design guidelines.

62. PLATFORM PLATFORM ARCHITECT
A set of software components, providing an essential function to a technology system - which acts as a
foundation for others to develop complementary products or services.
Platforms are used cross Business Domain, and are meant to build Business functionality on top of it.
Platforms are global shared productized solutions in ING. Platforms have roadmaps, releases, tutorials,
training, self service portals, etc
DOMAIN DOMAIN ARCHITECT
Specific business functionality, including the channel facing API and the IT chains necessary to fulfill the
services promised by the API. Resilience, security, data modelling, complexity reduction, are concerns of the
domain. Domain naming is based on the LAA.
Mandate of the Domain Architect:
• Is responsible for phasing and creating ‘Islands of Stability’;
• Owns the API’s that are exposed. An API can only be registered in the catalogue with approval of the
Domain Architect.

STANDARDIZING ARCHITECTURE ROLES
70. The physical organization of architecture practice follows the priorities set by the
enterprise and gets optimized through centralization or distribution
• Setting up common processes & roles
• Building an architecture community
• Ensuring bank-wide alignment through
hierarchical independency
• Easing application development

Summary
76. • Size your EA department to embrace your strategy.
Build your skills step by step.
• Specialize EA in architecture roles and skills to
cover end-to-end and domain challenges.
• Use market standards, like TOGAF & SAFe, to define and position EA activities
in your company.
• EA success is measured by the business people using your architecture views
when communicating and deciding. They are your best ambassadors.
• Giving external lectures and “telling stories”, like today at SBS, are facilitating
the recognition of EA within your company.
