  2. 2. There are many definitions of social media. <br />I’m a simple guy who lives by simple definitions. <br />Social Media is people communicating and collaborating online<br />
  3. 3. Engage.<br />Form Relationships. <br />Share content. <br />Social is the new currency.<br />Social Media is the answer. <br />There has been a fundamental shift in how we communicate<br />
  4. 4. Concessions<br />Yes, we have more people.<br />Yes, technologies have changed.<br />But, what else?<br />

  6. 6. Communication: Check<br />Friendships: Check<br />Relationship: Check<br />Engage / Listen: Check<br />
  7. 7. Where else has this happened?<br />Conversations<br />Letters<br />Telephone<br />Fax<br />BBS<br />Forums<br />
  8. 8. Beware the Practitioners<br />Being technologically savvy is important.<br />How long have they been involved?<br />Can they nail down past the fluff?<br />
  9. 9. Mistake 1: Groundbreaking<br />Social is one more channel<br />To many players put all their eggs in one basket<br />‘Because other people do’ is not a reason<br />Traditional media matters<br />
  10. 10. Mistake 2: Lipstick on a pig<br />Have a better product first<br />Social, like everything else, will fail as a band-aid<br />Gear your processes towards social<br />
  11. 11. Mistake 3: ‘He’ gets it<br />Being ‘young’ is not a requisite for understanding social media. Neither is having lots of followers.<br />Social media is just communication. Who understands your business and customers?<br />Curation over Creation.<br />
  12. 12. Mistake 4: Measurement<br />Measure what counts<br />Clicks are irrelevant unless you know click -> sale<br />Sales are important<br />Flawed assumption that people will see<br />
  13. 13. Mistake 5: Making Money<br />Most companies are on social to generate leads yet struggle to sell something.<br />If other channels convert better, re-funnel your energies.<br />Don’t be afraid to ask followers.<br />
  14. 14. Mistake 6: Over-friending<br />Who are you?<br />Don’t over-follow or become a push channel. This works best for big brands.<br />Reactive vs Proactive<br />
  15. 15. Mistake 7: Follow up negatives<br />Following up negatives is important<br />But, don’t spend all of your time here. <br />Spend time with the customers who already love you.<br />
