4. BAUHAUS
Designed by famous German architect AR. Walter Gropius along with
Adolf Meyer.
Basically Bauhaus was an art and crafts school in Germany.
In German , Bauhaus meant ‘house of construction’.
Bauhaus was so designed not to isolate the functions from each
other and also had a separation between them.
The whole building had a straight forward design approach.

PLAN-
The whole building was made of glass windows.
The glass curtain wall was used here.
The building had a light color which allowed huge amount of light on
the wall.
The whole cube seems like it was floating on the ground.
Bauhaus is a steel structured building.
It is a three storey building.

The building comprises of five main functional elements-
• Workshop block
• Social area
• Administrative wing
• Studio workshop
• Trade school
The mass production of various parts like windows, etc. started after
this.

The studio blocks are connected by auditorium, canteen,
gymnasium.
Left wing- school of arts and crafts
Right wing- workshop
Linear structure.
The building was aesthetically advanced whereas
technologically far behind the contemporary works.

This piece of architecture gave rise to modernism.
This had minimalism and functionality.
Buildings made after this were always cubic in shape.
‘Less is more’ holds true.
Open floor plan became famous.
Flat roofs, cubic shapes became popular.
Use of glass and steel increased.
