  What are WWNNs and WWPNs?

   A WWNN is a World Wide Node Name; used to uniquely identify a device in a Storage Area Network (SAN). Each IBM Storage device has its own
    unique WWNN. For DS8000, each Storage Facility Image (SFI) has a unique WWNN. For SVC and Storwize V7000, each Node has a unique
    WWNN.
   A WWPN is a World Wide Port Name; a unique identifier for each Fibre Channel port presented to a Storage Area Network (SAN). Each port on an
    IBM Storage Device has a unique and persistent WWPN.
   IBM System Storage devices use persistent WWPN. This means if an HA (Host Adapter) in an IBM System Storage Device gets replaced, the new
    HA will present the same WWPN as the old HA. IBM Storage uses a methodology whereby each WWPN is a child of the WWNN. This means that if
    you know the WWPN of a port, you can easily match it to the WWNN of the storage device that owns that port.
   A WWPN is always 16 hexadecimal characters long. This is actually 8 bytes. Three of these bytes are used for the vendor ID. The position of the
    vendor ID within the WWPN varies based on the format ID of the WWPN. To determine more information we actually use the first character of the
    WWPN to see which format it is (the vendor ID position is highlighted in red):


  1 = IEEE 803.2 standard format (example 10:00:00:00:c9:2f:65:d6  this is an Emulex HBA WWPN since Emulex owns the 0000c9 company ID.
  2 = IEEE 803.2 extended format (example: 21:00:00:e0:8b:90:90:04  this is a Qlogic HBA WWPN since Qlogic owns the 00e08b company ID.
  5 = IEEE Registered Name format (example 50:05:07:63:00:c7:01:99  this is an IBM WWPN since IBM owns the 005076 company ID.
   An example of a Registered Name Format WWPN is 50:05:07:63:00:c7:01:99.            We know this WWPN uses the Registered Name Format because it
    starts with a ‘5’. This format can be broken down into 3 sections:
            Section 1 – Format ID                      Section 2 – Vendor ID                   Section 3 - Vendor Unique

     Vendor ID 001738 is registered to IBM (formerly registered to XIV).
     Vendor ID 005076 is registered to IBM.
     Vendor ID 00A0B8 is registered to Symbios Logic, now owned by NetApp, who manufacture the DS3000, DS4000 and DS5000.
     Vendor ID 0080E5 is registered to LSI Logic, but is used by NetApp, who manufacture the DS3000, DS4000 and DS5000.

  DS3400 WWPN Determination

   WWNN is based on:        20:0Z:00:A0:B8:xx:xx:xx      where xxxxxx is unique for each machine
   WWPN is based on:        20:YZ:00:A0:B8:xx:xx:xx      where xxxxxx is unique for each machine
   The Y value is the port number.      For DS3400 this will be 2 (port FC1) or 3 (port FC2)
   If Z = 4 or 6 then the port is on controller A
   If Z = 5 or 7 then the port is on controller B
   In the examples below , the numbers shown in the boxes are YZ numbers (port/controller)
   So if a port contains ‘24’ it means the WWPN for that port is 20:24:00:A0:B8:xx:xx:xx

  DS3500 WWPN Determination

   WWNN is based on:        20:0Z:00:80:E5:xx:xx:xx      where xxxxxx is unique for each machine
   WWPN is based on:        20:YZ:00:80:E5:xx:xx:xx      where xxxxxx is unique for each machine
   The Y value is the port number.      For DS3500 this will be 3, 4, 5 or 6 (ports 1 to 4)
   If Z = 4 or 6 then the port is on controller A
   If Z = 5 or 7 then the port is on controller B
   In the examples below , the numbers shown in the boxes are YZ numbers (port/controller) where Z is 6 and 7 (not 4 and 5)
   So if a port contains ‘36’ it means the WWPN for that port is 20:36:00:80:E5:xx:xx:xx

   WWPN is based on:        20:YZ:00:A0:B8:xx:xx:xx
   The Y value is the port number. For DS4800 this is 1 to 4.
   If Z = 4 then the port is on controller A

    WWNN is based on:        20:0Z:00:80:E5:xx:xx:xx
    WWPN is based on:        20:YZ:00:80:E5:xx:xx:xx
    The Y value is the port number.      For DS5020 this is 1 to 4 (note: ports 3 and 4 are an optional feature).
    If Z = 4 or 6 then the port is on controller A
    If Z = 5 or 7 then the port is on controller B
    The numbers shown in the boxes are YZ numbers (port/controller)
    So the upper right hand port on controller A contains ‘14’ meaning the WWPN for that port
     is 20:14:00:80:E5:xx:xx:xx and it is port 1 on controller A

   WWNN is based on:        20:0Z:00:A0:B8:xx:xx:xx      where xxxxxx is unique for each machine
   WWPN is based on:        20:YZ:00:A0:B8:xx:xx:xx      where xxxxxx is unique for each machine
   The Y value is the port number.      For DS5000 this ranges from 1 to 8.
   If Z = 4 or 6 then the port is on controller A
   If Z = 5 or 7 then the port is on controller B
   In the examples on the next page , the numbers shown in the boxes are YZ numbers (port/controller)
   So the upper right hand port contains ‘16’ meaning the WWPN for that port is 20:16:00:A0:B8:xx:xx:xx and it is port 1 on
    controller A

  DS6800 WWPN Determination

   WWNN is based on either:
    50:05:07:63:0Z:FE:xx:xx where the Z and xx:xx combination is unique for each machine
    or
    50:05:07:63:0Z:FF:xx:xx where the Z and xx:xx combination is unique for each machine
   WWPN is based on: 50:05:07:63:0Z:YY:xx:xx              where xx:xx is unique for each machine
   The YY value is the port number..
      When the WWNN is 50:05:07:63:0z:FE:xx:xx
        then the WWPN will contain even YY numbers (00,02,04,06 and 80,82,84,86)
         When the WWNN is 50:05:07:63:0z:FF:xx:xx
           then the WWPN will contain odd YY numbers (01,03,05,07 and 81,83,85,87)

  DS8000 WWPN Determination

   DS8000 WWNN is on: 50:05:07:63:0z:FF:Cx:xx or 50:05:07:63:0z:FF:Dx:xx
   The z and x:xx values will be a unique combination for each machine and each Storage Facility Image (SFI).
   Each SFI has its own WWNN. The Storage Unit itself also has a unique WWNN.
   Use lssi to get the SFI WWNN (don’t use lssu):
   DS8000 WWPN is a child of the SFI WWNN, based on 50:05:07:63:0z:YY:Yx:xx
   Take the z and x:xx value from the WWNN and use the YY:Y location derived from the port location as per the diagrams on
    the next five pages.
   All DS8000 diagrams are from a REAR view of the machine.
   There are no differences for WWPN determination between DS8100, DS8300, DS8700 and DS8800

  DS8800 Eight Port Host Adapters

   The DS8800 is different to earlier models in that it supports host adapters with eight ports.
   The DS8800 also supports host adapters with four ports.
   The maximum port count for a DS8800 remains 128 ports (which is the same as earlier models).
   The maximum host adapter count for a DS8800 is 16 (which is less than earlier models which support 32)
   Only slots C1 and C4 in each enclosure are used for host adapters
   Where a four port host adapter is used, only the top 4 ports will be present on that card.
   Note that for the eight port card, when an ESS800/DS8100/DS8300 connects to the lower four ports of the eight port card, the
    SAID it will report will NOT be the same as the IOport number. These special SAIDs are documented in Techdoc TD105862
    which can be found here:

  DS8800 WWPN changes

   Machines built starting mid December 2011 will use slightly different WWPNs.
   The three digit segment of the WWPN that identifies each port will be ‘1’ higher.
   This means for instance where port I0300 on an older machine had a WWPN segment of 18:0 on a new machine it will be 18:1
   This means for instance where port I0301 on an older machine had a WWPN segment of 18:4 on a new machine it will be 18:5
   This means for instance where port I0302 on an older machine had a WWPN segment of 18:8 on a new machine it will be 18:9
   This means for instance where port I0303 on an older machine had a WWPN segment of 18:C on a new machine it will be 18:D
   This change will also affect DS8700s built after December 2011.
   This change does not affect existing machines, only machines shipped new from plant after mid December 2011.

  Enterprise Storage Server (ESS 2105) WWPN / SAID determination

   An ESS WWNN is in the format:        50:05:07:63:00:C0:xx:xx
    xx:xx is a unique value assigned by manufacturing
    WWPN is 50:05:07:63:00:YY:xx:xx where YY is taken from the slot position of the card as per the following diagram:

   This output was produced using an ESSCLI command, not a DSCLI command. To get a copy of ESSCLI contact your

  Storwize V7000 (2076-112/124/312/324) WWPN determination

   The Storwize V7000 consists of two node canisters . The WWNN of each node canister will be based on
    50:05:07:68:02:0x:xx:xx where x:xx:xx is unique for each node canister. It is unrelated to the WWNN of the other node
    canister though the last number of the two WWNNs are normally sequential.
   The WWPN is based on: 50:05:07:68:02:Yx:xx:xx where x:xx:xx is unique for each node canister and the Y value is taken
    from the port position. Note that the lower canister is upside down in relation to the upper canister.
   The number in each black box is the Y value. It is also the port number, This means the Y value and the port number are
    the same number (unlike the SVC).
   So for example, port 1 (the upper left hand most port), contains a 1, so a WWPN presented by this port would look like:
    50:05:07:68:02:1x:xx:xx.

  XIV (2810/2812 - A14) WWPN Determination – Generation 2

   WWNN Determination
   WWNN format is 50:01:73:8x:xx:xx:00:00 where x:xx:xx is the 5 digit XIV serial
    number in hexadecimal. This means if you know the XIV serial number, you can
    convert it from the 5 digit decimal number to hexadecimal and determine the WWNN.

   WWPN Determination
   WWPNs will be in the format: 50:01:73:8x:xx:xx:RR:MP
    where x:xx:xx is the 5 digit XIV serial number in hexadecimal and:
      – RR: Rack ID (currently always 01)
        M:    Module ID (4 to 9)
        P:    Port ID (0 to 3)
   In the diagram to the right, the MP value (Module/Port)
    which make up the last two digits of the WWPN) is shown in red.
    The diagram represents the patch panel found at the rear of rack 1.

   Hardware Dependencies
   There are two Fibre Channel HBAs in each XIV module.
    Ports 1 and 2 are on the left hand HBA.
    Ports 3 and 4 are on the right hand HBA.

  WWNN Determination
   WWNN format is 50:01:73:8x:xx:xx:00:00 where x:xx:xx is the 5 digit XIV serial
    number in hexadecimal. This means if you know the XIV serial number, you can
    convert it from the 5 digit decimal number to hexadecimal and determine the WWNN.


  WWPN Determination
   WWPNs will be in the format: 50:01:73:8x:xx:xx:RR:MP
    where x:xx:xx is the 5 digit XIV serial number in hexadecimal and:

  • 2. IBM Storage Systems WWPN Determination Version 6.5 What are WWNNs and WWPNs?  A WWNN is a World Wide Node Name; used to uniquely identify a device in a Storage Area Network (SAN). Each IBM Storage device has its own unique WWNN. For DS8000, each Storage Facility Image (SFI) has a unique WWNN. For SVC and Storwize V7000, each Node has a unique WWNN.  A WWPN is a World Wide Port Name; a unique identifier for each Fibre Channel port presented to a Storage Area Network (SAN). Each port on an IBM Storage Device has a unique and persistent WWPN.  IBM System Storage devices use persistent WWPN. This means if an HA (Host Adapter) in an IBM System Storage Device gets replaced, the new HA will present the same WWPN as the old HA. IBM Storage uses a methodology whereby each WWPN is a child of the WWNN. This means that if you know the WWPN of a port, you can easily match it to the WWNN of the storage device that owns that port.  A WWPN is always 16 hexadecimal characters long. This is actually 8 bytes. Three of these bytes are used for the vendor ID. The position of the vendor ID within the WWPN varies based on the format ID of the WWPN. To determine more information we actually use the first character of the WWPN to see which format it is (the vendor ID position is highlighted in red): 1 = IEEE 803.2 standard format (example 10:00:00:00:c9:2f:65:d6  this is an Emulex HBA WWPN since Emulex owns the 0000c9 company ID. 2 = IEEE 803.2 extended format (example: 21:00:00:e0:8b:90:90:04  this is a Qlogic HBA WWPN since Qlogic owns the 00e08b company ID. 5 = IEEE Registered Name format (example 50:05:07:63:00:c7:01:99  this is an IBM WWPN since IBM owns the 005076 company ID.  An example of a Registered Name Format WWPN is 50:05:07:63:00:c7:01:99. We know this WWPN uses the Registered Name Format because it starts with a ‘5’. This format can be broken down into 3 sections: Section 1 – Format ID Section 2 – Vendor ID Section 3 - Vendor Unique 5 0:05:07:6 3:00:c7:01:99 Vendor ID 001738 is registered to IBM (formerly registered to XIV). Vendor ID 005076 is registered to IBM. Vendor ID 00A0B8 is registered to Symbios Logic, now owned by NetApp, who manufacture the DS3000, DS4000 and DS5000. Vendor ID 0080E5 is registered to LSI Logic, but is used by NetApp, who manufacture the DS3000, DS4000 and DS5000. There are literally 1000’s of company IDs registered with the IEEE. IBM Storage Systems WWPN Determination Version 6.5 DS8800 Eight Port Host Adapters  The DS8800 is different to earlier models in that it supports host adapters with eight ports.  The DS8800 also supports host adapters with four ports.  The maximum port count for a DS8800 remains 128 ports (which is the same as earlier models).  The maximum host adapter count for a DS8800 is 16 (which is less than earlier models which support 32)  Only slots C1 and C4 in each enclosure are used for host adapters  Where a four port host adapter is used, only the top 4 ports will be present on that card.  Note that for the eight port card, when an ESS800/DS8100/DS8300 connects to the lower four ports of the eight port card, the SAID it will report will NOT be the same as the IOport number. IBM Storage Systems WWPN Determination Version 6.5 DS8800 WWPN changes  Machines built starting mid December 2011 will use slightly different WWPNs.  The three digit segment of the WWPN that identifies each port will be ‘1’ higher.  This means for instance where port I0300 on an older machine had a WWPN segment of 18:0 on a new machine it will be 18:1  This means for instance where port I0301 on an older machine had a WWPN segment of 18:4 on a new machine it will be 18:5  This means for instance where port I0302 on an older machine had a WWPN segment of 18:8 on a new machine it will be 18:9  This means for instance where port I0303 on an older machine had a WWPN segment of 18:C on a new machine it will be 18:D  This change will also affect DS8700s built after December 2011.  This change does not affect existing machines, only machines shipped new from plant after mid December 2011. The WWNN of each node canister will be based on 50:05:07:68:02:0x:xx:xx where x:xx:xx is unique for each node canister. It is unrelated to the WWNN of the other node canister though the last number of the two WWNNs are normally sequential.  The WWPN is based on: 50:05:07:68:02:Yx:xx:xx where x:xx:xx is unique for each node canister and the Y value is taken from the port position. Note that the lower canister is upside down in relation to the upper canister.  The number in each black box is the Y value. It is also the port number, This means the Y value and the port number are the same number (unlike the SVC).  So for example, port 1 (the upper left hand most port), contains a 1, so a WWPN presented by this port would look like: 50:05:07:68:02:1x:xx:xx. This means if you know the XIV serial number, you can convert it from the 5 digit decimal number to hexadecimal and determine the WWNN.  WWPN Determination  WWPNs will be in the format: 50:01:73:8x:xx:xx:RR:MP where x:xx:xx is the 5 digit XIV serial number in hexadecimal and: – RR: Rack ID (currently always 01) M: Module ID (4 to 9) P: Port ID (0 to 3)  In the diagram to the right, the MP value (Module/Port) which make up the last two digits of the WWPN) is shown in red.
