  11. 11. Top level messages • Technology advances have accelerated beyond most people’s imagination in the last 18 months [and I’ll share these in this webinar] • ‘Robots taking your jobs’ have hit the popular press • There are optimists and pessimists about the impact on employment – no one yet knows which will play out • What is clear is that over the next few years there will be jobs lost, jobs diminished, jobs enriched, new jobs created • Few roles will escape impact, including many in professional and managerial roles who think they are immune from incursion • There will be knock on effects on career paths, skills and capability, engagement, teams, organisational culture, performance, health and safety, employee relations, work-life balance, employment branding, and the customer’s experience of service. • All domains that ABP members have expertise in and in which they can take a lead position as they support organisations manage the impending changes

  17. 17. The Bank of England believes that machines might take over 80 million American and 15 million British jobs over the next 10 to 20 years, or 50% of the workforce in each of the two countries. “These machines are different,” the bank’s chief economist Andy Haldane said. “Unlike in the past, they have the potential to substitute for human brains as well as hands.” According to the bank, administrative, clerical and production workers might be the first to be replaced by robots in the coming years. That’s not to say unemployment will suddenly rise. Humans will “adapt their skills to the tasks where they continue to have a comparative advantage over machines.” ishman & Partners

  40. 40. So, as with any other business disruption the business psychology disciplines must address: • The impact on jobs: which lost? Which diminished? Which enhanced? Which new? Which immune to change? • Impact on skills and capabilities • Impact on employee engagement • Impact on talent attraction and retention • Impact on performance: metrics, management, and reward • Impact on careers • Challenges of change management • Attitudes of key stakeholders and how to get their support • Impact on employment brand and reputation • There is a key role for people in HR, OD, and for Business Psychologists in all of this: now, next 6 months, next 1 – 2 years – but we have to figure out what that is Fishman & Partners
