Antony Williams is a Computational Chemist at the US Environmental Protection Agency in the National Center for Computational Toxicology. He has been involved in cheminformatics and the dissemination of chemical information for over twenty-five years. He has worked for a Fortune 500 company (Eastman Kodak), in two successful start-ups (ACD/Labs and ChemSpider), for the Royal Society of Chemistry (in publishing) and, now, at the EPA. Throughout his diverse career path he has experienced multiple work cultures and focused his efforts on understanding the needs of his employers and the often unrecognized needs of a larger community. Antony will provide a short overview of his career path and discuss the various decisions that helped motivate his change in career from professional spectroscopist to website host and innovator, to working for one of the world's foremost scientific societies and now for one of the most impactful government organizations in the world. The authoring of a scientific publication can represent the culmination of many tens if not 100s of hours of data collection and analysis. The authoring and peer-review process itself often represents a major undertaking in terms of assembling the publication and passing through review. Considering the amount of work invested in the production of a scientific article it is therefore quite surprising that authors, post-publication, invest very little effort in communicating the value and potential impact of their article to the community. Social networking has clearly demonstrated the ability to self-market and drive attention. At the same time, the increasing volume of literature (over a million new articles are published every year), requires authors to take on a more direct role in ensuring their work gets read and cited. This requirement may grow with the emergence of a range of metrics at the article level, shifting attention away from where a researcher publishes to the performance of their individual articles. Therefore, a separate platform to facilitate social networking and other discovery tools to communicate the value of published science to the community would be of value. In parallel the possibility to enhance an article by linking to additional information (presentations, videos, blog posts etc) allows for enrichment of the article post-publication, a capability not available via the publishers platform. Nowadays we all have access to online software tools including Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Blogs, etc. that allow us to develop and engage a network of followers. These applications provide the opportunity for scientists to personally share information regarding research activities with the larger more general public. The rich array of tools available now allow for data sharing, distribution of conference presentations with or without narration, enhancing scientific articles post-publication and, ultimately, measuring the alternative metrics impact of sharing this information. The presenter will provide an overview of common social media tools available that he has found to be of value over the past few years of working with the myriad of available applications. He will discuss how to utilize your limited time to get the biggest return in terms of disseminating information about your scientific research, provide access to your data and presentations, as well as develop an overall “alternative metrics” view of your activities. Our access to scientific information has changed in ways that were hardly imagined even by the early pioneers of the internet. The immense quantities of data and the array of tools available to search and analyze online content continues to expand while the pace of change does not appear to be slowing. ChemSpider is one of the chemistry community’s primary online public compound databases. Containing tens of millions of chemical compounds and its associated data ChemSpider serves data tens of thousands of chemists every day and it serves as the foundation for many important international projects to integrate chemistry and biology data, facilitate drug discovery efforts and help to identify new chemicals from under the ocean. This presentation will provide an overview of the expanding reach of the ChemSpider platform and the nature of the solutions that it helps to enable. We will also discuss the possibilities it offers in the domain of crowdsourcing and open data sharing. Antony Williams is a Computational Chemist at the US Environmental Protection Agency in the National Center for Computational Toxicology. He has been involved in cheminformatics and the dissemination of chemical information for over twenty-five years. He has worked for a Fortune 500 company (Eastman Kodak), in two successful start-ups (ACD/Labs and ChemSpider), for the Royal Society of Chemistry (in publishing) and, now, at the EPA. Throughout his diverse career path he has experienced multiple work cultures and focused his efforts on understanding the needs of his employers and the often unrecognized needs of a larger community. Antony will provide a short overview of his career path and discuss the various decisions that helped motivate his change in career from professional spectroscopist to website host and innovator, to working for one of the world's foremost scientific societies and now for one of the most impactful government organizations in the world. The authoring of a scientific publication can represent the culmination of many tens if not 100s of hours of data collection and analysis. The authoring and peer-review process itself often represents a major undertaking in terms of assembling the publication and passing through review. Considering the amount of work invested in the production of a scientific article it is therefore quite surprising that authors, post-publication, invest very little effort in communicating the value and potential impact of their article to the community. Social networking has clearly demonstrated the ability to self-market and drive attention. At the same time, the increasing volume of literature (over a million new articles are published every year), requires authors to take on a more direct role in ensuring their work gets read and cited. This requirement may grow with the emergence of a range of metrics at the article level, shifting attention away from where a researcher publishes to the performance of their individual articles. Therefore, a separate platform to facilitate social networking and other discovery tools to communicate the value of published science to the community would be of value. In parallel the possibility to enhance an article by linking to additional information (presentations, videos, blog posts etc) allows for enrichment of the article post-publication, a capability not available via the publishers platform. Nowadays we all have access to online software tools including Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Blogs, etc. that allow us to develop and engage a network of followers. These applications provide the opportunity for scientists to personally share information regarding research activities with the larger more general public. The rich array of tools available now allow for data sharing, distribution of conference presentations with or without narration, enhancing scientific articles post-publication and, ultimately, measuring the alternative metrics impact of sharing this information. The presenter will provide an overview of common social media tools available that he has found to be of value over the past few years of working with the myriad of available applications. He will discuss how to utilize your limited time to get the biggest return in terms of disseminating information about your scientific research, provide access to your data and presentations, as well as develop an overall “alternative metrics” view of your activities. In recent years, the growth of scientific data and the increasing need for data sharing and collaboration in the field of environmental chemistry has led to the creation of various software and databases that facilitate research and development into the safety and toxicity of chemicals. The US-EPA Center for Computational Toxicology and Exposure has been developing software and databases that serve the chemistry community for many years. This presentation will focus on several web-based software applications which have been developed at the USEPA and made available to the community. While the primary software application from the Center is the CompTox Chemicals Dashboard almost a dozen proof-of-concept applications have been built serving various capabilities. The publicly accessible Cheminformatics Modules (https://www.epa.gov/chemicalresearch/cheminformatics) provides access to six individual modules to allow for hazard comparison for sets of chemicals, structure-substructure-similarity searching, structure alerts and batch QSAR prediction of both physicochemical and toxicity endpoints. A number of other applications in development include a chemical transformations database (ChET) and a database of analytical methods and open mass spectral data (AMOS). Each of these depends on the underlying DSSTox chemicals database, a rich source of chemistry data for over 1.2 million chemical substances. I will provide an overview of all tools in development and the integrated nature of the applications based on the underlying chemistry data.
