This document discusses the segregation, storage, and disposal of industrial solid wastes at ALU sites. It outlines that wastes should be separated by nature and stored separately, such as biodegradable, non-biodegradable, recyclable, hazardous, and clinical wastes. Non-biodegradable waste is further divided into recyclable, hazardous/toxic, and biomedical/clinical categories. The document also specifies color coding for waste storage bins and provides disposal methods for each waste category, such as incineration for hazardous and clinical wastes, and municipal collection for biodegradable and recyclable wastes.

Segregation, storage and disposal of industrial wastes
1. Segregation, Storage and Disposal of DOMESTIC &
INDUSTRIAL SOLID Wastes FOR ALL ALU Sites
By Aritro Mukherjee (Assistant
Manager, QHSE, ALU- Pan India)
2. Segregation of Wastes at Industrial
Sites
• What is Waste Segregation?
• Segregation of Wastes :- It is defined as the
Separation of various types of wastes generated
and their proper categorization depending on their
nature. It is mainly done to separate and store
wastes of similar nature at a single place so that
they can be easily transported and disposed in a
proper manner without creating nuisance and
hindrance for the other persons.
3. Segregation and Categorization of
Industrial Site Wastes.
• Segregation & Categorization of Industrial Site Wastes :- Industrial Site Wastes
can be segregated & categorized as :
– (i) Biodegradable Waste : It includes Organic Wastes like Food Wastes, Paper Wastes and
other wastes & trashes generated from Canteen & Cafeteria area.
– (ii) Non-biodegradable Waste : This can be further classified into :
• 1. Recyclable Waste : These can be recycled. Ex .Plastic Wastes(Especially Plastic
Glasses & Mini-cups).
• 2. Hazardous and Toxic Waste : These include wastes like Cooked Oily
Sludge(Usually generated in Food Canteen Services), Oily Cotton
Waste(Generated in Technical Services).
• 3. Biomedical or Clinical Waste : They include wastes like Cotton Wastes, Band
Aid Wastes, Adhesive Tape and Blood soaked clothes from First-aid wound
dressings.

1. Hazardous
flammable
waste
Collected in designated dustbins, Cooked oily sludge to be
collected in small containers, oily cotton waste to be
collected in secured bags & transported to incinerator for
incineration.
2. Biomedical or
clinical waste
Collected in designated dustbins, packed in secured bags &
sent to Incinerators for Incineration.
3. Recyclable
waste
Collected in designated dustbins, if possible can be re-used
& re-cycled within the site. Else after collecting in Garbage
Bags can be disposed with authorized municipal solid waste
collectors.
4. Biodegradable
waste
Collected in designated dustbins, packed in small disposable
bags & disposed with authorized municipal solid waste
collectors.
