2. Composition
It is the arrangement of visual elements within the
frame of a photograph. Visual elements are like
ingredients in a dish, which when mixed in the right
way give appealing results.
4. Define Your Purpose
What is your subject?
What do you want your photograph to convey?
The rules of composition are simply an aid to help
you achieve your answers to the first two questions.
5. Define Your Purpose
The difference between a good photograph and a
great photograph is that the latter tells a story,
coveys a message, spurs the viewer to think or feel
something.
What is your message or story?
Composition is a means to achieve that end.
8. Visual Elements
Each visual element is a feature or quality of the
photograph. In travel photography, most of these
elements are already present in the surroundings –
you need to identify them & learn to play with them.
13. Guidelines
1. Rule of Thirds & Golden Section (2/3)
2. The Right Third
3. Diagonals
4. Frame within a Frame
5. Horizontal vs. Vertical
6. Filling the Frame
7. Leading Lines
14. Guidelines
The guidelines for composition guide you to place
the visual elements in a certain pattern to create
effects which are visually attractive.
The guidelines are not restrictive. They are a starting
point in your journey of playing with your camera.
21. Timing
Timing is one of the factors that impact
composition, and is often overlooked. Great timing
can make all the difference to a photograph.
22. Timing
• To achieve great timing, it ties back into first defining
your purpose & know what you are looking out for.
• When in a place where you want to take pictures, setup
controls on your camera for exposure – like aperture,
ISO, white balance – keeping only one parameter
flexible to play with. Shutter speed works best in most
scenarios for this.
• When you see a subject to be shot, you are already set.
You simply need to compose and click!
24. Assignment #1
At the start of a shoot, take the first 10 shots
with, say, the rule of thirds in mind.
Now, after you take a shot, take it in a totally
out of box way, without keeping any rules in
your mind.
Do you like to take photographs a certain
way ? What is that?
25. Assignment #2
Pick your favourite photographer. Study his or
her photographs and see if they have applied
any rules of composition to their photographs or
have made their own rules.
What effects have they achieved in their
photographs?
