This document discusses different types of fabrics, including their definitions and examples. It covers four main categories of fabrics: woven fabrics like jeans and poplin, knitted fabrics which can be weft or warp knitted like socks and swimwear, non-woven fabrics such as raincoats and paper filters, and special fabrics including felted and braided materials. Specific woven constructions are also outlined, such as plain weave, twill, satin, and pile fabrics like velvet and terry. The classifications provide an overview of fabric types and constructions.

2. What is fabric?
• Fabric is textile’s surface which is very thin in relation to it’s
length & width.
• As per construction fabric can be classified into 4 groups.
They are-
1. woven Fabric (eg; apparel fabric, poplin, jeans etc.)
2. Knitted fabric (eg; weft knitting fabric, warp knitting fabric)
3. Non-woven fabric (eg; musk, paper filter, bank note, rain coat
etc.)
4. Special types fabric (eg; felted fabric, braided fabric etc)
3. Woven fabric
• Two series of yarn interlaced each other at
right angled. ( eg; Poplin, jeans etc.)
4. Knitted fabric
• Knitting is a process of fabric manufacturing by
loop formation of yarn & intermeshing each
other with the help of needle.
• There are two types of knitted fabric. They are-
1. Weft-knitted fabric (eg; socks, t-shirt, jumpers)
2. Warp-knitted fabric (eg; swimwear, underwear)
5. Weft-knitted fabric
• If the loop formation & intermeshing goes
horizontally in the fabric then that will be
called weft knitted fabric.
6. Warp-knitted fabric
• If the loop formation & intermeshing goes
vertically in the fabric then that will be called
warp knitted fabric.
7. Non woven fabric
• The cloth made from textile or non-textile
fiber after web formation, then it process by
mechanical or chemical bonding of parallel or
unparalleled way is called non woven fabric.
Example of non woven fabric may be filter
paper, rain coat etc.
8. Classification of non woven cloth
spun less non woven cloth
Thermal bonded non woven
cloth
Pulp air laid non woven cloth
Wet plus non woven cloth
Spun bond chemical non
woven cloth
Melt bond non woven cloth
Acupuncture non woven cloth
Stitch bonded non woven
cloth
9. Woven cloth construction & it’s types
• The pattern of interlacing of warp & weft yarn
is called woven cloth construction. It is the
diagramed representation on the design
paper.
• There are three types of basic weave
construction. They are-
1. plain weave
2. twill weave
3. satin weave
10. What is plain weave?
• It is the simplest form of weave construction
by the equal number of warp weft
interlacement.
11. Derivatives of plain weave
• 1. warp rib: Two neighboring picks move in a
group. Hence the warp threads are more
prominent and float created in the warp
direction.
13. • 2. weft rib: in case of this weave design, the
two neighboring ends move in a group. Ribs
become visible in weft direction created by
the floats of the picks.
22. What is satin or sateen?
• Sateen: it is a weft face loose fabric
construction has long float of weft.
• Satin: it is a warp face loose fabric
construction has long float of warp.
24. What is pile fabric?
• Fabric with cut or uncut loop which stand up
densely on the fabric is called pile fabric.
There two types of pile fabric. They are-
• 1. warp pile fabric
• 2. weft pile fabric
25. Warp & weft pile fabric
• Warp pile fabric consist of plies or loops of warp
yarn running lengthwise along the fabric.
• In weft pile fabrics, the pile weft is cut in a separate
operation after weaving resulting in a surface
consisting of short & very dense tufts.
26. Velvet fabric
• Velvet warp pile fabric made by extra warp floats.
For manufacturing, special type of steel wire used.
It may be cut or uncut form.
27. Velveteen fabric
• It is weft pile construction. This type of fabric
made by loose form of weft insertion.
28. What is terry fabric?
• It is a class of pile fabric having loop both side
of the fabric.
• Types-
-terry with standing loop pile in regular
order
-terry with irregular loop without standing
pile fabric
-terry with cut pile.
30. Swivel woven fabric
• The term swivel was normally applied to the
narrow fabric loom. Somehow swivel can be
explained different types of weft yarn on the
plain cloth.
