Most Employers Don’t Give Workers a Paid Holiday on
Veterans Day, Bloomberg BNA Survey Shows
Arlington, Va. (November 1, 2013)— Although Veterans Day is one of 10 official federal holidays, most
employers do not give their workers the day off as a paid holiday, according to survey findings detailed
today by Bloomberg BNA, a leading publisher of specialized news and information.
Overall, 22 percent of employers surveyed in Bloomberg BNA’s Holiday Leave Practices survey said
Veterans Day is a paid holiday for their employees. By comparison, virtually all surveyed employers
provide a paid holiday on New Year’s Day and Thanksgiving Day (98 percent), Independence Day,
Labor Day and Christmas Day (97 percent) and Memorial Day (96 percent).
“Still, employers are relatively more likely to host Veterans Dayrelated events or to commemorate the
holiday in other ways than most of the other federal holidays ,” Matthew R. Sottong, director of surveys
for Bloomberg BNA, said. The survey found Veterans Day to be the third most commemorated of all the
holidays surveyed , topped only by Christmas and Thanksgiving, Sottong added.
The survey found that only about onethird of organizations (36 percent) have a budget for sponsoring
celebratory events for holiday observances or holidayrelated activities, and even fewer offer company
events specific to individual holidays. Eleven percent of employers hold Veterans Day related events or
activities, the survey found, coming in third to Christmas (28 percent) and Thanksgiving (14 percent).
Just 5 percent of employers reported holding holiday related events or activities on Memorial Day, which
honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. armed forces.
The types of Veterans Day activities cited by respondents ranged widely from sending an email to
recognize and thank employeeveterans or thanking veterans in a company newsletter to holding a
companysponsored breakfast or lunch in honor of veterans to providing a small gift to employees who
are veterans. Others said their organization hosts a cookoff and bake sale to raise funds for veterans,
while some respondents said they hosted activities with speakers and memorial programs.
Findings on the Veterans Day holiday are part of a broader Holiday Leave Practices2013survey
conducted online in March 2013 among 501 human resource professionals from around the United
States and representing a variety of industry sectors.
Veterans Day, celebrated annually on Nov. 11, honors American veterans of all wars. Congress passed
legislation in 1938 designating Veterans Day (then called Armistice Day) as a federal holiday.
