(May 3, 1933 – December 25, 2006)
Born on May 3, 1933, James Brown worked his way to the top of the funk and R&B
music earning the moniker "The Godfather of Soul." His unique vocal and musical
style influenced many artists. Brown was also renowned for his work in social
activism, both in his songwriting and advocating the benefits of education to
schoolchildren. As a singer, songwriter, arranger, and dancer, who was one of the
most important and influential entertainers in 20th-century popular music and whose
remarkable achievements earned him the sobriquet “the Hardest-Working Man in
Show Business.”

Godfather of SOUL
Brown was raised mainly in Augusta, Ga., by his great-aunt, who took him in at about the age of five when his parents divorced.
Growing up in the segregated South during the Great Depression of the 1930s, neighbours taught him how to play drums, piano,
and guitar, and he learned about gospel music in churches and at tent revivals, where preachers would scream, yell, stomp their
feet, and fall to their knees during sermons to provoke responses from the congregation. Brown sang for his classmates and
competed in local talent shows but initially thought more about a career in baseball or boxing than in music.
At age 15 Brown and some companions were arrested while breaking into cars. He was sentenced to 8 to 16 years of
incarceration but was released after 3 years for good behaviour. While at the Alto Reform School, he formed a gospel group.
Subsequently secularized and renamed the Flames (later the Famous Flames), it soon attracted the attention of rhythm-and-blues
and rock-and-roll shouter Little Richard, whose manager helped promote the group. Intrigued by their demo record, Ralph Bass,
the artists-and-repertoire man for the King label, brought the group to Cincinnati, Ohio, to record for King Records's subsidiary
Federal.
The label's owner, Syd Nathan, hated Brown's first recording, “Please, Please, Please” (1956), but the record eventually sold
three million copies and launched Brown's extraordinary career. Along with placing nearly 100 singles and almost 50 albums on
the best-seller charts, Brown broke new ground with two of the first successful “live and in concert” albums—his landmark Live at
the Apollo (1963), which stayed on the charts for 66 weeks, and his 1964 follow-up, Pure Dynamite! Live at the Royal, which
charted for 22 weeks.
During the 1960s Brown was known as “Soul Brother Number One.” His hit recordings of that decade have often been associated
with the emergence of the Black Arts and black nationalist movements, especially the songs “Say It Loud—I'm Black and I'm
Proud” (1968), “Don't Be a Drop-Out” (1966), and “I Don't Want Nobody to Give Me Nothin' (Open Up the Door, I'll Get It Myself)”
(1969). Politicians recruited him to help calm cities struck by civil insurrection and avidly courted his endorsement.
In the 1970s Brown became “the Godfather of Soul,” and his hit songs stimulated several dance crazes and were featured on the
sound tracks of a number of “blaxploitation” films (sensational, low-budget, action-oriented motion pictures with African American
protagonists). When hip-hop emerged as a viable commercial music in the 1980s, Brown's songs again assumed centre stage as
hip-hop disc jockeys frequently incorporated samples (audio snippets) from his records. He also appeared in several motion
pictures, including The Blues Brothers (1980) and Rocky IV (1985), and attained global status as a celebrity, especially in Africa,
where his tours attracted enormous crowds and generated a broad range of new musical fusions.

Omar ibn Said (1770–1864) was born in present-day Senegal in
Futa Tooro,[1]
a region along the Middle Senegal River in West
Africa, to a wealthy family.[2]
He was an Islamic scholar and a Fula
who spent 25 years of his life studying with prominent Muslim
scholars in Africa. In 1807, he was captured during a military
conflict, enslaved and taken across the Atlantic Ocean to the
United States. He escaped from a cruel master in Charleston,
South Carolina, and journeyed to Fayetteville, North Carolina.
There he was recaptured and later sold to James Owen. Said
lived into his mid-nineties and was still a slave at the time of his
death in 1864. He was buried in Bladen County, North Carolina.
Omar ibn Said was also known as Uncle Moreau and Prince
Omeroh.[1]
Although Omar converted to Christianity on December 3, 1820,
many modern scholars believe he continued to be a practicing
Muslim, based on dedications to Muhammad written in his Bible,
and a card dated 1857 on which he wrote Surat An-Nasr, a short
sura which refers to the conversion of non-Muslims to Islam 'in
multitudes.' The back of this card contains another person's
handwriting in English misidentifying the sura as the Lord's
Prayer and attesting to Omar's status as a good Christian.[3]
.
Additionally, while others writing on Omar's behalf identified him
as a Christian, his own autobiography and other writings offer
more of an ambiguous position. In the autobiography, he still
offers praise to Muhammad when describing his life in his own
country; his references to "Jesus the Messiah" in fact parallel
Quranic descriptions of Jesus (who is called ‫يح‬ ‫س‬ ‫م‬ ‫ال‬ 'the Messiah'
a total of 11 times in the Quran), and descriptions of Jesus as 'our
lord/master' (‫ا‬ ‫يدن‬ ‫س‬ ) employ the typical Islamic honorific for
prophets and is not to be confused with Lord ( ); and
description of Jesus as 'bringing grace and truth' (a reference to
John 1:14) is equally appropriate to the conception of Jesus in
Islam. Given Omar's circumstances of enslavement "among the
Christians" and the possibilities of lobbying for his freedom that
only came with confessing Christianity, his conversion can be
argued to have been made under duress. In 1991, a masjid in
Fayetteville, North Carolina renamed itself Masjid Omar Ibn Said
in his honor.[4]
Omar ibn Said is widely known for fourteen manuscripts that he
wrote in Arabic. Out of all of his Arabic manuscripts, he is best
known for his autobiographical essay written in 1831.[5]
It
describes some of the events of his life and includes reflections
on his steadfast adherence to Islam and his openness towards
other 'God fearing' people. On the surface the document may
appear to be tolerant towards slavery, however Said begins it
with Surat Al-Mulk, a chapter from the Qur'an, which states that

Competition (IWSC) – the most internationally-recognized wine and

Crossing the Burning Sand

With the rising sun on their backs,
Arabian merchants traveled the
burning sands by camel to do
business with their relatives as well
the Sons of Ham who resided in
Akubulan to barter for gold, exotic
animal skins and ivory. However,
the exact routes of the caravan are
still kept secret today. Originating
in Persia, they crossed the Arabian
Desert, the an-Nafud desert, the Rub
Al-Khali , and the Ad-Dahna desert.
Traveling close to the Mediterranean
Sea where the Red Sea begins in
Egypt, the Tuareg guides lead
merchants from Persia into
Akubulan. Crossing into Egypt and
headed towards Libya and the rest is
a mystery.
The Tuareg guides have travelled
these routes for centuries. It is clear
that changing camels at certain
locals was essential for a successful
journey. Although the camel can
survive days without water, having
the right provisions and enough food
and water was key to their survival.
The Tuareg are experts in travelling
the deserts and know the terrain.
The Tuareg people are
predominently nomadic people of
the sahara desert, mostly in the
Northern reaches of Mali near
Timbuktu and Kidal. The Tuareg are
often referred to as "Blue Men of the
desert " - because their robes are
dyed indigo blue. They live in small
tribes with between 30 and 100
family members and keep camels,
goats, cattle and chicken which graze the land.1
Descending from the Sahara and into sub-Sahara, a major stopping point in now modern day Mali, the Tuareg have traced these
paths for centuries. . There was protocol, formalities and practices when merchants came to do business in Africa. They had to be

granted permission from the sitting king or queen to enter into their territory and traveling letters of introduction were customary.
Entering into the market place, these merchants were awe struck by the amount of gold and the wealth and riches on the west
coast of Africa and it was told of kings, queens, sultans and priest in Persia Europe, Asia and Russia. Arabian merchants travelled
thousands of miles just to see their markets, eat their food, see their women and sit at the learning seats of Timbuktu University.
What went wrong? Some Arabians were not legitimate businesses but worked with pirates or sailors from European nations
invading the motherland.
The greed of European pirates which included those from Spain, France, Dutch, Portugal and a long time enemy Italy caused the
attacks on tribes internally. Invaders moved westward towards the Atlantic Ocean capturing our ancestors and leading them into
slavery. Unfortunately, Morocco helped the invaders but was able to keep their sovereignty as a monarchy.
After the death of Muhammad in 632 AD, Islam was taught throughout the Arabian Nations and later spread into Africa. The
written scrolls of the Quran were brought to Timbuktu University in the 11th
Century. It is here that the division began amongst
schools of thought and philosophy as the bases of their teachings was traditional African customs and a practice of Christianity not
known elsewhere.
The merchants bartered with the musket gun and gun powder and that is how Africa was infiltrated and conquered by spies from
other nations. The descent of Arabian pirates into modern day Sudan, Chad and Niger caused tribal wars stemming from issues
surrounding their faith: Christianity, Judiasm and Islam. Many merchant from Persia were of Muslim religious belief system and
their business practices caused wars still raging today. Who do you do business with?
Timbuktu’s architecture, style of learning and curriculum has influence nations world-wide. It is this university that our ancestors
learned agriculture, engineering, businesses and architecture, to name a few. Africans came from all over the continent just to sit
and learn from the scholars and master instructors at Timbuktu.
They too crossed the burning sands but our ancestor’s journey was for higher learning to attend Timbuktu University in Mali and
the original form of networking.

Cain Discusses Suspending His GOP Bid with BET
On December 3, 2011, US presidential hopeful Herman Cain is suspended his
campaign for the Republican nomination. BET Networks brought to air a
deeper characterization of one the most controversial black political figures in
contemporary America in an exclusive one-on-one interview special "The
Curious Case of Citizen Cain" on Thursday, December 8 at 9 PM ET/PT. Cain
discussed in-depth for the first time to the black audience about what he calls
"scams perpetrated on blacks" by liberal black leaders, his fiery brand of black
conservatism, and the sex scandals that drove him from the Republican
Presidential race. BET News retraced his unconventional rise to the top of the
GOP presidential field, and his dramatic political descent. This was a half-hour
special part of a series of BET News specials.
Denise Joins Single Ladies
VH1 has cast scripted cable (USA's "White Collar") and daytime soap opera (ABC's "All
My Children") alumnus Denise Vasi in a brand new role as series co-lead in the
network's hit scripted series "Single Ladies," alongside fellow returning actresses
LisaRaye McCoy and Charity Shea. "Single Ladies" previously received a second
season greenlight after averaging 2.8 million total viewers during premieres plus first
encores in its first season. "Single Ladies" season 2 will begin filming in Atlanta in
January and premiere in early summer, 2012 on VH1.
Vasi is cast as "Raquel," a close friend of Keisha (LisaRaye McCoy). Raquel is a savvy
business woman from a prominent Southern family on a quest to discover passion.
Vasi's recent credits include roles in films "When in Rome" and "What's Your Number,"
and television roles including HBO's "How to Make it in America," USA's "White Collar"
and ABC's "All My Children" among others.

Entertainment Executive Producer Queen Latifah. "She is bringing a fun, new element to the show."

Bush visit First Lady of Zambia Dr. Christine Kaseba of Zambia
During a visit to the George Urban Health Center
in Lusaka today, President George W. Bush, Mrs.
Laura Bush and First Lady of Zambia Dr.
Christine Kaseba were joined by United States
Ambassador Mark Storella to announce that
Zambia will be the first Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon®
partner country, expanding the availability of vital
cervical cancer screening and treatment, and
breast care education to those in need.
Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon is an innovative
partnership between the George W. Bush
Institute, the U.S. Department of State
President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief
(PEPFAR), Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and
the Joint United Nations Programme on
HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) that leverages public and
private investments and existing health
infrastructures to combat cervical and breast
cancer, the two leading causes of cancer deaths among women in Sub-Saharan Africa. The cervical cancer partnership will utilize the platform
and resources at PEPFAR and will draw from lessons learned in the significant scaling-up of access to HIV interventions in recent years.
"Today I'm proud to announce that Zambia is the first country to implement a new effort to combat cervical and breast cancer in the developing
world," said President Bush. It's not acceptable to save a woman's life from HIV/AIDS and watch her die from cervical cancer."
Joining President and Mrs. Bush, Dr. Kaseba and Ambassador Storella were Sr. Joseph Kasonde, Minister of Health, Zambia; Gary Cohen,
Executive Vice President, Becton Dickinson; Katrina McGhee, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Susan G. Komen for the
Cure; Dr. Sheila Tlou, Regional Director, UNAIDS and Dr. Julie Gerberding, President, Merck Vaccines.
Ambassador Storella said, "Zambia has the flagship program for screening and early treatment of cervical cancer in Africa. This additional
funding and the support of the Government of Zambia will help prevent the terrible suffering due to cervical cancer across the country through
prevention, early detection and treatment."
PEPFAR will contribute an additional $3 million U.S. dollars, and the Zambian Ministry of Health will dedicate nurses and clinic space to perform
simple screening to highlight potential cancers at an early stage, when they can be treated on the spot before they progress.
The University Teaching Hospital Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, supported by the Centre of Infectious Disease Research, Zambia
(CIDRZ) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), developed a program in 2005, to train nurses to perform a visual
inspection technique and to take a picture of the cervix using a simple digital camera. This way it is possible to see even small lesions, and the
findings can be confirmed by an expert panel.
In addition, the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, will pilot vaccination of fourth-grade girls against Human
Papilloma Virus (HPV), the cause of nearly all cervical cancer.
An initial donation of Gardasil® HPV vaccine was made by Merck Inc., one of the Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon corporate partners. The Ministry will
seek to expand this program to reach high-risk districts through a program of vaccination and prevention messages. Susan G. Komen for the
Cure, in partnership with Merck, will invest approximately $1.5 million over three years for cervical and breast cancer community sensitization
and mobilization activities in Zambia. All activities will be under the direction and in partnership with the ministry of health and will be integrated
as part of their efforts at a comprehensive cancer control plan. BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), another Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon
corporate partner, will assist in supporting the School of Medicine in training in pathology and cytology.
Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon has commitments of $75 million over five years, and is expected to grow to include additional participants and services.
The goals are to reduce deaths from cervical cancer by an estimated 25 percent among women screened and treated through the initiative,
significantly increase access to breast and cervical cancer prevention, screening and treatment programs, and create innovative models that can
be scaled up and used globally.

President Obiang received the Beacon for Africa Award at the 2011
In a speech at the Sullivan Honors Awards, President Obiang discussed the
promotion of African integration by leading Equatorial Guinea toward a better future
by facing its challenges and achieving the country's desired self-improvement and
progress. President Obiang has led the efforts of the African community while
promoting the continent and carrying out the development of Equatorial Guinea.
"Equatorial Guinea, as a unified country, knows that in order to achieve self-
improvement and progress, we have to face problems and challenges, with the
support of friendly countries and the international community," said President
Obiang.
President Obiang received the Beacon for Africa award at the 2011 Sullivan Honors
in recognition of his leadership of the African Union and his exemplary contributions
to improving the lives of Africa's most vulnerable citizens. The Sullivan Honors event
is one of Washington's greatest cultural highlights of the year.

Equatorial Guinea's government has adopted special programs for the promotion and protection of human rights with the help of
the International Red Cross, which has verified the performance of state institutions by selecting and implementing programs that

"The positive effects of these programs have resulted in an increased school ratio, life expectancy, malaria reductions, as well as
the progressive increase of technical and professional staff," said President Obiang.
"Our country recently went through a constitutional change that strengthened the powers of the state institutions, promoted the

was approved and voted by the majority of the population.

$6 Million Grant to Expand Global Health

Global Health Corps
program which provides
life saving pediatric health
care, treatment and
training to the most
medically underserved
populations in Africa.
"This new partnership with
Chevron will allow us to
put more critically-needed
doctors on the ground in
Africa, providing much
needed health care to
children and whole
families and training
hundreds of African
physicians, nurses and other health professionals," said Dr Mark Kline, physician-in-chief at Texas Children's Hospital,
chair of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and founder of the Baylor College of Medicine International Pediatric
AIDS Initiative (BIPAI).
Chevron's contribution will support the recruitment and training of about 10 additional U.S. physicians on an annual
basis to expand the program's focus into Angola and Liberia. The program also has the goal of expanding into
communities in Nigeria, as well as Latin America.
"The agreement with Texas Children's Hospital and BIPAI strengthens our current efforts in helping to better meet the
healthcare needs of underprivileged communities in the countries where we operate, now and in the future," said
Rhonda Zygocki, executive vice president, policy and planning, Chevron Corporation.
The Global Health Corps program recruits talented and committed pediatricians and family doctors for long-term
assignments in Africa to care for thousands of children and families affected by serious or life-threatening medical
conditions including sickle cell disease, malaria, tuberculosis, malnutrition, cancer and HIV/AIDS. Global Health Corps
physicians also perform clinical research and train local health professionals to build capacity for pediatric health care.
"We value the opportunity to support remarkable doctors who provide critical day to day pediatric and maternal health
care while training in-country care givers to help build a legacy of greater health expertise in the areas where they are
located," said Ali Moshiri, president, Chevron Africa and Latin America Exploration and Production Company.
Texas Children's Global Health Corps will build upon the collaborative, mentoring relationships that exist with the
Ministries of Health, local stakeholders, and local health professionals to help with professional training, capacity
building, and community mobilization within the national health workforce.

governments and private partners in tackling some of the most immediate medical needs in the countries of Africa,"

Today's agreement expands the partnership between Chevron, Texas Children's Hospital and BIPAI which was

IAMGOLD Resolves Minor Labour Disruption

Samuel L. Becker Distinguished Service Awarded to Dr. Orlando Taylor
The National Communication Association (NCA), the largest national organization
dedicated to communication, recently bestowed its prestigious Samuel L. Becker
Distinguished Service Award on Dr. Orlando Taylor, interim vice president of
academic affairs at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and president of
its Washington, D.C. Campus. One of the Association's highest honors, the award
recognizes an NCA member who has given outstanding cumulative service in
research, teaching and/or service to both NCA and the profession. Presented at the
NCA's 97th Annual Convention in late November, this year's award honors Dr.
Taylor's work in communication education and research, primarily in the areas of
communication science and intercultural communication, as well as his years of
service to the discipline, which included a term as the NCA's national president.
"Dr. Taylor has been involved with NCA for over 40 years and has been instrumental
in driving some of the most important initiatives both within and outside NCA to
address communication issues and challenges through scholarship, research, and

present contributions to NCA, his relentless promotion of communication as a social

New Flights Between Beijing and Lhasa
Air China officially launched direct daily
rotations between Beijing and Lhasa on
December 15, the first time that direct
scheduled flights between the two cities are
available.
Air China uses its A319s which have been
retrofitted to acclimatize to the plateau
conditions on the route. The crew has rich
experiences of flying over the Roof of the
World. The flights are operated on a daily
basis and the flight numbers are CA4125/6.
One journey takes just 4 hours, which means the flight takes 2 hours less than the previous one that had to stop over in the city of
Chengdu. For the time being, the service is the only non-stop flight between the two cities. In high season, Air China will use
larger Airbus330 aircraft on the route.
Air China has been actively involved in promoting the formation of the air transport network serving Tibet and helping further the
progress of the autonomous region in areas of economy, culture and tourism. Now, Air China offers flights between Beijing,
Chengdu, Chongqing and Kathmandu (the capital of Nepal) and Tibet where Lhasa, Linzhi and Bangda are served. Factor in the
direct rotations introduced on December 15, and Air China now operates over 100 flights a week into and out of Tibet. The
introduction of the new rotations gives travelers more travel options and will play an instrumental role in bringing more travelers to
Tibet and thusly promoting local economic growth.

Guizhou province recently, and is expected to benefit

The Guiyang - Luodian Highway, designed to be
112.913 kilometers in length, is an important part of
the Yinchuan - Longbang Highway that was included
in the planning of the National Highway Network.
The construction of the Guiyang - Luodian Highway

regional economic development.
Zhou Zongwen, board chairman of Chow Tai Seng Jewelry, one of China's largest diamond jewelry retailers and wholesalers, said that the

Zhou said the company will invest tens of billions of yuan to exploit the white jade mine in Luodian County, which will provide tens of thousands

The Key to Development in Haiti
"The key to achieving sustainable
development in Haiti is to drive it through
local initiatives and decentralized
cooperation," said Haiti's Minister of the
Interior, Thierry Mayard-Paul.
Speaking to an international audience during
the two-day "Invest in Haiti Forum"
sponsored by the Inter-American
Development Bank and the Clinton
Foundation, Mayard-Paul urged investors to
expand their thinking to the opportunities
waiting outside Haiti's urban areas.
Decentralization is a cornerstone goal of the
Martelly administration, and private
investment is pivotal to making the
President's vision for a decentralized Haiti a
reality. Mayard-Paul stressed the many
compelling opportunities for private
companies in helping revitalize and renovate
Haiti's infrastructure, particularly outside of Port-au-Prince.
"Infrastructure development is not only a key element in accelerating decentralization; it's also an incredible investment opportunity," he added,
pointing out that the Inter-American Development Bank, is fully committed to supporting local development and decentralization.
Attracting more than 1,000 national and international participants from 29 countries, the "Invest in Haiti" forum underscores Haiti's new approach
to nation-building and sustainable economic growth. Describing Haiti as "ten thousand plus square miles of opportunities filled with an
enthusiastic work force," Mayard-Paul reiterated the importance of investment in the heartland.
To encourage and reassure interested parties that Haiti is a viable country in which to invest, Haiti is making adjustments to the current legal
framework in key areas such as democratic governance, rule of law, tax incentives, land reform and other measures that will ensure investors
enjoy the most favorable conditions to realize positive results while contributing to the good of the people of Haiti.
During the conference, Mayard-Paul echoed President Martelly's message that Haiti wants investors to profit, so Haiti can prosper.
"By investing in Haiti," President Martelly said, "you will contribute to our sustainable future -- helping to create prosperity for the nation and for
our people -- for generations to come."
With the Martelly administration diligently working to build a new business eco-system that will ensure "a socially just, economically free, and

renovation of Haiti's economic system, which animates the social and political dynamism of democracy."
U.S. Ambassador to Haiti Kenneth H. Merten endorses Haiti's new track: "Investment is the real key to making the Haitian people more
prosperous, which in turn will make the Haitian nation more independent and sovereign."
Social infrastructure projects that work to improve the social conditions of low-income rural communities, such as health, sanitation, rural
education, community organization and training, are a priority. As an example, Minister Mayard-Paul highlighted an ambitious health and
sanitary program slated for Haiti's Southwestern Grand' Anse region. The program, valued at US $700,000, will benefit 80,000 families.
According to Mayard-Paul, agriculture is one of the key sectors where partnerships, joint ventures and other collaborations would have a
positive, long-term impact, accelerating decentralization and job creation in rural areas. "Roughly half of Haiti's population is involved in
agriculture, a sector that currently represents over 25 percent of the nation's GDP," he stated.
Outlining investment opportunities in the heartland, the Minister of the Interior, highlighted several exemplary projects including the nearly $55
million investment by Royal Caribbean International in cruise tourism and Give-Eco Energy's $100-million joint-venture green energy project.
This project will deliver 50MW of green energy and provide over 5,000 new jobs that will benefit underserved areas.
"The Haitian government is committed to facilitating investment," underscored Minister Mayard-Paul. "We are ready to assist with municipal
initiatives throughout Haiti -- in any of our regions -- and we look forward to collaborating for sustainable development that advances

Honorable Gianni Pittella, Hosted an International Conference
The 1st Vice President of the European Parliament, the Honorable Gianni Pittella, hosted an international conference titled: "Peace and Well-
being, addressing the founding values of the European Union" on November 28.
Against a backdrop of international uncertainty, including riots in many European cities, government change and continued unrest in the Middle
East, an audience of institutional representatives and MEPs joined academics and business people from more than 25 countries to explore the
most pressing issues facing Europe and the world today: peace and well-being.
Gianni Pittella and keynote speaker Prem Rawat were introduced by Dr. Anthony Seldon, political historian, author, journalist, and current
Headmaster of Wellington College (UK). Referring to Ambassador of Peace Prem Rawat, Dr. Seldon commented, "Peace—what a wonderful
country to be Ambassador for."

the human connection people have with each other, he added, "Every single being on the face of this earth is your neighbor."
Referring to the recent low General Election turnout in one European country, Mr. Rawat commented, "Democracy is a few serving the many.
Today, democracy has become the many serving the few. I'm not a politician, but I am a human being who holds very close to his heart the
fundamental possibility of peace on this earth." He said that "peace is in the heart of human beings, not in the mind of human beings" and
concluded, "Peace needs to be given the chance to happen. We have tried everything else."
Mr. Pittella and Mr. Rawat took questions from students from the Red Cross Nordic United World College, and then the EU representatives
present were invited to show public commitment to peace and well-being by signing the "Pledge to Peace." Inspired by the lectures of Prem
Rawat and his message of personal peace, the Pledge to Peace was created under the patronage of Gianni Pittella. It is a call to action to do
something tangible for peace in 2012 and beyond.
Mr. Pittella explained, "the Pledge to Peace is based upon the founding principles of the European Union, the core principles of the Lisbon
Treaty 2009, and the Charter of Fundamental Rights. It promotes the development of peace and peace education to enhance the well-being of
its peoples."
After the Pledge to Peace was signed by Mr. Pittella and Mr. Rawat, the first signatory was Linda Pascotto, President of The Prem Rawat
Foundation. The Foundation promotes Prem Rawat's message of peace and his vision of addressing fundamental human needs so that people
everywhere can live with dignity, peace and prosperity.
Founding signatories of the Pledge included UN Peace Day creator, Jeremy Gilley from England; Mr. Seemanto Roy, son of Subrata Roy
Sahara, Chairman of the Sahara Group in India; and the Honorable Nicolo Cristaldi MEP (Italy) and Mayor of Mazara Del Vallo, Sicily, who had
recently invited Mr. Rawat to speak on the topic of peace in that region. Each took a few moments to explain to the audience why they were
adding their names to the document, and their own projects in service of peace. Their signatures were followed by those of representative

To Catch A Thief
Ways to Safeguard Against Identity Theft updated 11/2011
1. In computer safety, place a password on your laptop and desk top so no one else has access.
2. Never give anyone your social security number unless it is necessary for a purchase.
3. Do not recycle your cell phone. Destroy all internal chips.
4. Remove the Central Processing Unit (CPU) before discarding an old computer.
5. When mailing a document.
a. Seal it with a glue stick
b. Place a strip of clear scotch tape on the back over the flaps
c. Place a mark or your initial on the tape (if someone opens it without permission the recipient will know immediately)
d. Invest in opaque or brown envelopes. NEVER use white envelopes. They are transparent.
6. Never let anyone borrow your laptop. NO One.
7. On your answering machine, Never say. “We’re not home right now.” Instead use someone else’s voice, a male/female
friend or a child. Have them say, ―Please leave a detailed message and we will get back to you.‖ Or allow the computer
generated answering machine to take a message.
8. Buy with Cash or Gift Cards whenever possible.
9. Keep all receipts from credit card purchases in a safe place.
10. Banking Safety
a. Refrain from online banking on public computers. Only use as an emergency.
b. Watch where you park and how you arrive at the physical bank and watch your surroundings while you are at the ATM

there.

Dish of the Month
Pepper Jack Cheese Souffle
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 55 minutes
Servings: 6
Ingredients:
 4 Tablespoons butter
 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
 1 1/4 cup whole milk
 2 cups Sargento® ChefStyle Shredded Pepper Jack Cheese
 5 large eggs, separated
 1 egg white
 1 Teaspoon black pepper
Directions:
 In a small saucepan, melt butter and stir in flour until smooth. Gradually add milk and
cook, stirring constantly, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer for 2 minutes while
stirring frequently. Remove from heat and stir in cheese until melted. Add black pepper
and set aside.
 In a large bowl, whisk egg yolks and gradually add cheese mixture. Whisk until smooth.
Set aside.
 Preheat oven to 325° F. Lightly butter a 6-cup souffle dish and dust with flour. In a
separate bowl, whip egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gently fold egg whites into yolk
mixture, 1/3 of beaten whites at a time. Pour egg mixture into dish; it will be 1/2 to 2/3
full.
 Bake 45 minutes until puffy and golden. Serve immediately.
Tips:
 A souffle needs a straight-sided, round dish to rise properly. It will at least double in
size as it bakes.
 You can use 6 ramekins for individual souffles and bake 25 minutes.
