3.  :1. Synonyms: cut, slash, slice.
( it is longer than it’s depth)
2. Definition: It refers to an open
wound resulting from a cut or an
incision in the skin or underlying
tissues by sharp force.
It is caused by a weapon with sharp cutting edge when it is
drawn across the skin.

4.  3. Causative weapons:
- Light cutting weapons
knives, razor, blades, scissors and scalpel
- Heavy cutting weapons
daggers, swords, axe, chopper.

 Striking force – assailant strikes on a victim by
knife
 Drawing force- surgeon draws an incision on a
patient’s body by a scalpel
 Sawing force – to and fro movements by sharp
weapon

9. A) shape of the wound: usually spindle
shaped & gaping.
B) margins: clean & regularly cut, not
contused
C) bleeding; bleed freely & profusely due to
blood vessels are clean cut

10. d) edges: sharp, evenly divided, averted, smooth,
e) angles: sharp , acute.
f) base: intervening deeper tissues are leanly & evenly
divided.
g) dimensions: length is greater than depth and Width
of wound is.

11. I) tailing of the wound:
-gradual decrease in depth of wound is seen
towards terminal end.
-So a superficial wound involving only skin is
seen at one end -This is called “ tailing of the
wound”.
-Tailing indicates direction of the application of
force.

12. J).clothes:
showing clean cuts , mostly in
case of assault.
cutson clothes may correspond
with the wound ,
but if the clothes are loose, folded
or drawn up during struggle, cuts
in clothes may not coincide with the wounds.

-self inflicted (suicidal)
-homicidal
-accidental
-surgical
2, cause of death due to incised wound is severe
bleeding- hypovolemic shock
3, Age of the wound –by findings of healing process.

 History of similar attempts.

 Injured parts are ‘less sensitive’ i.e. rarely
involve lips, or face.
 Clothes are often intact (but not always)
 Tentative or hesitation marks are
highly characteristic of self-inflicted
wounds

deep cut

CHARACTERISTICS
These are generally small, multiple superficial cuts
found at the commencement of incised wound & merging
with the main incision.

multiple, parallel , mostly superficial , super
imposed, .
 found on of the body, opposite side to the dominant hand,
 Seen in women >men
 Self mutilation e.g. self castration usually
indicates severe mental illness

21.  Targets are often neck, face and chest, abdomen ‘
 Usually single and deep, but multiple deep injuries
are always homicidal.
 Not associated with hesitation/ tentative marks
 Clothing often damaged .
 May be associated with defensive injuries, or signs of
restraint.
 Sweeping/ slash (striking force) in nature
Most homicidal cutthroat injuries are inflicted from behind the
victim, and the head is pulled back to expose the throat.

33.  Accidental incised wounds are commonly the
result of either a fall onto broken glass, or
through a glazed surface, or during DIY or
working with sharp tools.
 The wounds may be on the forearms or wrists
