This presentation was provided by Sue Kriegsman, Deputy Director of the Center for Research on Equitable and Open Scholarship (CREOS) and Interim Co-Director of Human Resources, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Libraries, during the two-day "NISO Tech Summit: Reflections Upon The Year of Open Science." Day two was held on October 26, 2023.
Kriegsman "Integrating Open and Equitable Research into Open Science"
1. Integrating Open and Equitable
Research into Open Science

2. ICOR and MIT Libraries
● ICOR connects projects and collects case studies of interventions of
open collaborative research
● CREOS conducts original research on the incentives, barriers,
impacts, and economic models of open scholarship/science
● Partner existing projects with research skills and methodologies
4. Fundamental Questions
● When does making scholarship more open lead to greater equity? When
does it create or exacerbate inequities?
● What is the best way to seed diverse and ongoing investigations into the
question of equity and open scholarship?
● How can we embed investigators into existing projects and platforms to
study equity, inclusion, and diversity?
5. Do the work at scale
● A program being developed by MIT and ICOR to funds leaders and
fellows to study these questions
● Fellows and Leaders in Open and Equitable Scholarship (FLOES)
○ based at MIT and, with help from ICOR, matches investigators
to projects and platforms to study issues in open and equitable
scholarship
6. Goals of the FLOES program
(Fellows and Leaders in Open and Equitable Scholarship)
● Increase the number of people who can do the work
● Match the projects and the people
● Make studying equity part of the regular process of open scholarship
● Create a mechanism that seeds a new field of study
7. Get it off the ground
● NSF EArly concept Grants for Exploratory Research (EAGER) grants are
“exploratory work in its early stages on untested, but potentially
transformative, research ideas or approaches”
● Integrating Open and Equitable Research into Open Science
● 4 stages of the grant
○ Environmental scan
○ Stakeholder engagement
○ Fellowship program strategy
○ Analysis
8. Next Steps
● Use the 1 year EAGER grant period to design FLOES
● Build community around the program to advise and support
● Seek funding for the Fellows and Leaders program
● Launch in 2025
