Santander Universities US renews agreement
with Brown University

February 2015-. Santander, through Santander Universities in USA, renewed the
agreement in support of the Brown International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI) program.
This collaboration with Brown University started has been sponsoring Brown University since 2008.
BIARI is a program that convenes four institutes per summer, organized as a mix of lectures,
round-table discussions, group work, field trips, cultural events, and social interactions for
promising young faculty from throughout the world interested in pursuing study on the core themes
of the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University: development, governance,
and security (broadly defined). Each Institute is led by Brown faculty who invite world-renowned
lecturers and speakers.
The 2015 BIARI workshops will explore the following themes:
 Humanitarian Response and Post-Conflict Reconstruction: Increasing Effectiveness and
Accountability in the Age of Complex Emergencies.
 Governance and Development in the Age of Globalization.
 Ethnicity, Conflict, and Inequality in Global Perspective.
 Population and Development: New Approaches to Enduring Global Problems.
Potential to change the world
Román Blanco, country head of the Bank in US, and Christina Paxson, president of Brown
University, signed the agreement. In his remarks, Román Blanco said, “Over the last 6 years,
Santander has joined BIARI in its commitment to gathering scholars from all parts of the world. The
research institutes represent a unique platform for policy dialogue and engagement, and the
fellows’ work has the potential to change the world for the better.”
BIARI is one of the several global programs that Santander Universities US sponsors. Partner
institutions from the global network are especially encouraged to participate. Since the beginning of
the program, more than 850 scholars and practitioners from 101 countries have participated in the
BIARI institutes at Brown.
Santander Universities was founded in 1996 to advance the Santander Group’s commitment to its
communities by supporting higher education. Santander Universities provides funding for teaching
and research, international cooperation, knowledge and technology transfer, entrepreneurial
initiatives, student exchange and innovation. It maintains more than 1,100 agreements with
