Wild Pacific salmon numbers are rapidly declining in Canada and without intervention could face extinction. The Species At Risk Act (SARA) provides a legislative tool to protect endangered species by listing them in categories of threatened, extirpated, special concern, or endangered. Once listed, a mandatory recovery plan is required which can include actions like habitat protection, restoration, artificial habitat creation, catch quotas, and salmon hatcheries to help populations recover as has been done for Atlantic salmon. Pacific salmon populations are also threatened or endangered in several US states bordering the Pacific Ocean.
