The following SlideShare is an introduction to personalized learning. It helps teachers make a connection to the management techniques, as described in "The CAFE" by Boushey and Moser, for guiding students in selecting and tracking progress towards goals. Elements from "Visible Learning" by John Hattie are included.
2. Session description
Interested teachers will have the opportunity to explore what
personalized learning is and will learn the core components of the
personalized learning honeycomb. They will learn the first steps
in implementing personalized learning in the classrooms (Teachers
will learn to guide their students in creating a class goal and will
learn management techniques to track progress towards goals
and the completion of goals. This will be accomplished by making
a connection to the instructional tools and management
techniques described in “The CAFÉ Book” by Boushey and Moser.)
Teachers will work with the learning continuums previously
creating in the Spring of the 2014-2015 school year to gain
competence in identifying student goals and become familiar with
the progression of skills. (The learning continuums are entirely
aligned with the CCSS in reading, writing, language and math and
consist of student “I can” statements.) Self-assessment
techniques described in “Visible Learning” by John Hattie will be
discussed as an integral component of personalized learning.
Finally, teachers will learn how to use formative assessments
aligned to the CCSS to identify instructional needs.
3. Today’s Purpose
Learning Intentions:
By the end of this session, you will:
Understand the core components of the personalized learning
honeycomb.
Understand how to guide students in setting goals and tracking
progress towards completion.
Understand the progression of skills students are expected to
master.
Understand the role of assessments in guiding instruction
Success Criteria:
By the end of this session, you will have:
Identified management strategies to use to help students set goals.
Identified assessments you currently have or may need to measure
success

Learner choice 2
Customized learning paths 1
Rapid cycle feedback 2
Learner voice 2
Proficiency based progress 1
Assessment 2
Flexible learning spaces 3
Rank the following characteristics with a 1, 2, or 3. (1 being foremost important to
personalized learning,2 being secondary, and a 3 being last.)
10. What is different?
Learning is the constant…Time is not.
Student choice
Ownership and responsibility
Students see themselves as their own best
teachers
Students are not all working on the same
activity at the same time
Different rates of learning
12. Learner Profile
What does it mean to
be a learner from the
eyes of a teacher?
From the eyes of
a student?

16. Pause and Reflect
Take a moment to tell the person next to
you about your current assessment
practices.
What evidence do you have that students
are learning?
How do students show evidence of
learning?
17. Record Keeping
For Teachers
A place to write down
student goals (Copies
of student
continuums? A class
roster?)
A place to document
progress Conferring
pages or “keeping
track” rosters
Lesson plans
For Students
Continuums
Student binders for
storage
Incentive charts
21. Parental Involvement
Letter to Parents
Invite reinforcement and
discussion
Talk to child about goals
Check incentive chart
