This presentation is of my trip to the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York; where I co-directed and acted in a gospel play.
I’m a playwright, director, and actress. I co-direct a gospel play called Midnight Cry; on Sept. 4, 2011; we performed at the world famous Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York.
I work with Quiet Fire Productions for this play, we have presented at the Wilsher Ebell Theater in Los Angeles, The Duarte Performing Arts Center and at the Balboa Theater in San Diego.
We made three trips to New York in preparation for the performance. On the first trip, the executive production team met with the staff of the theater to work out the logistics. There would only be one rehearsal in the actual theater; it would be the Friday night prior to the performance. All other rehearsals would take place in Los Angeles.
The Apollo is famous for launching the careers of many stars as a result of their amateur night show. Performers from all over the world have rubbed the famous Apollo Stump for good luck prior to their performance. I don’t believe in Luck; but I didn’t want to come to the Apollo and not rub the stump as so many both aspiring and renowned performers before me have done.
As part of our advertising campaign, the executive team’s second trip was to return to New York during the Harlem Week Festival, where we manned a both, gave away play tickets in a drawing, and offered a reduced rate for festival patrons.
Our third trip was for the actual presentation of the play. I had the opportunity to do an adjunct advertisement for it in Time Square, and get my 15 seconds of fame. (If you made a purchase at American Eagle Outfitters, you could go over take a picture, and add a message that would be shown outside on their monitor in Times Square. If you hurried out; you could get downstairs and see it!) As you can see…I made it!
