15. Current Building Envelope Issues impacting choice
While in the past building envelope conventions allowed standard details of traditional brick and precast, newer
standards across Canada, and those that will be coming soon, make it more and more difficult. Thin cladding outside
all exterior insulation cavity lend themselves more easily to these performance standards.
• Insulation between studs not satisfactory any more.
• Continuous AVB outside structure key to performance.
• Brick impact:
• Many ties piercing AVB,
• possibly thermal bridges.
• Installation quality key to satisfactory performance.
• Brick ledges are very deep, and thermal bridges (is there a tested thermally broken brick ledge?)
• Precast:
• Thick insulation requirements make sandwich panels either impossible or expensive, taking up floor slab space (are they possible?)
• Thermally broken cladding insulation cavities of 4-6” standard for thinner lighter weight cladding for 10 years, modelled by
experts and installed across the country.

What’s wrong
• Number of ties
• Penetrations of AVB
• Thermal bridges if not this tie
• Thickness of insulation ie
