Immersive Learning: The Future of Training is Here

The future of education has arrived with immersive learning. An immersive environment
allows students to be completely “immersed” in a self-contained simulated or artificial
environment while experiencing it as real. With immersive learning, you can show realistic
visual and training environments to teach complex tasks and concepts. For example,
familiarize yourself with the environment of an operations floor; receive an orientation before
reporting to a new duty location; perform the role of an MC-130J loadmaster; or identify
threats and converse with civilians in a foreign restaurant. Immersive learning enables
individuals to train more effectively, efficiently, and affordably than ever before.
Booz Allen Can Help You With Effective Training Solutions
Using cutting-edge hardware and software, Booz Allen Hamilton is creating immersive 3D
learning environments for our clients. Our expert staff of industry professionals creates
advanced technical training products rapidly and with the highest quality standards. We
understand the need for effective, interactive experiences that motivate and engage the
learner, while achieving specific learning goals. Our immersive learning products leverage
hands-on interactive tasks, allowing users to operate complex systems and manipulate
virtual 3D objects. This enhances their knowledge retention and reduces the amount of
time required to train on physical hardware. Our products and approaches provide learners
practical experience in a safe environment to support mission success. We strive to improve
the education and training model for military professionals and prepare them to meet the
warfare challenges of tomorrow.
We combine state-of-the-art immersive learning technology with graphics, text, voice,
video, sound, and animation to create effective, engaging learning experiences. We employ
adaptable and modern instructional design to create training that is operationally relevant,
individually tailored, and easily accessible, thereby minimizing training time and maximizing
the utility of limited training resources. Booz Allen is revolutionizing military training and
analysis in close partnership with the Defense Community. Booz Allen’s immersive training
is tailored to the needs of the learner and is compatible with a variety of delivery platforms.

Immersive Learning
The Future of Training is Here
2. Our Services and Approach
Traditional technical training primarily consists of classroom instruction supported by hard copy
materials and basic electronic media, it is not typically tailored to individual user needs. As a
result, student interest in the material is often low. Game-based learning is user-centric and directly
addresses the next generation of training needs; all users are immersed in technology and self-
directing. This teaching methodology enables instructors to leverage simulation technologies and
immersive learning principles to challenge learners with realistic scenarios. These scenarios require
detailed analysis and problem-solving skills to achieve specific learning goals and objectives.
Learners can re-enact a precise set of circumstances multiple times, exploring the consequences
of different actions, which creates a more in-depth learning experience, increases retention, and
promotes critical thinking. Learners spend more of their training time practicing and applying what
they have learned, and less time in traditional instructor-led training.
Success Stories
Booz Allen has helped numerous clients:
• The Cyberspace Defense Analysis Operations Floor is a 3D interactive learning tool that
enables trainees to explore the operations conducted on the ops floor, including interactive
examples of the advanced software used to detect and respond to cyber-related threats.
The course both familiarizes the users with onsite software and the physical location in
which they will be working.
• The 25th Air Force (AF) recently sponsored development of an interactive course for AF
Special Operations Command (AFSOC). Booz Allen worked with the AFSOC staff to develop
the requirement, identify a suitable delivery medium, and begin development. Booz Allen
transformed a legacy AFSOC MC-130J loadmaster course into a more engaging and interactive
product. This includes interior and exterior modeling of the aircraft and quizzes. The team
developed versions compatible with the PC and iPad, as well as developed a demonstration
version of the course in a virtual reality (VR) environment. AFSOC was so impressed with Booz
Allen’s work, the team asked Booz Allen to transform the VR demonstration version into a
workable course as well as develop another interactive learning product.
• Our VR prototype of a HUMINT/Surveillance/Tradecraft training environment places users into
a fictional restaurant setting where they can navigate around and explore the restaurant, the
street, and the rear alleyway. Non-Player Characters in the environment represent civilians
as well as potential adversaries. The prototype can be navigated using the HTC Vive VR
system, as well as through conventional methods using a Windows-based PC. By listening
to conversations, users will be able to practice threat identification and refine their linguist
skills. Booz Allen’s future developments in progress include multiplayer roleplay, instructor-led
scenarios, and additional environments for first responder or force protection scenarios.
Whether you are managing today’s issues or looking beyond the horizon, count on us to help you
be ready for what’s next.
