The title page photograph was taken at Etobicoke Creek in Brampton ON. I used the colour or the red maple leaves as a foreground to the winding creek in the background. The colour of the red maple being the predominant colour.
The following is a collection of my best pictures while covering recent stories for ToughTimes Newspaper.
Similar to my title picture, taken at the same time, instead I moved the tree towards the left, giving the creek more of the picture.
This was greatly inspired by The Group of 7 artists, which includes A.Y. Jackson's The Red Maple.
This is for comparison between my picture and A.Y. Jackson's The Red Maple.
Taken on John Street in Brampton, I shot the picture into the branches as oppose to just the tree. This shows the variant of colours and textures in the photo.
I happen to live just down the street to where they are construction a new Osler Wellness Centre at the site of the Old Peel Memorial in Brampton. While out on my back patio I noticed some clouds spewing out from behind the houses, in the direction of the new hospital. Then flames started to burst into the sky. Being a photographer and always looking for news this was a no brainy, and I grabbed my camera and dashed towards where the fire was. I increase my ASA and on a low exposure, no flash, and steady hands started to take some pictures. - This one was published in The Brampton Guardian Web Site, and I had five others posted on the CTV News Web site.
The preceding pictures is from covering the 2015 Remembrance Day Ceremonies in Brampton ON.
I thought this picture was a nice reflection while I myself was taking pictures of the wreaths, I found this young girl also taking pictures, and the contrast of youth paying homage to the fallen soldiers.
As per the picture of the young girl standing in front of the War Memorial taking pictures, I thought that this one with a young boy donning the military gear that was worn by our Canadian troops in WWI & WWII riding shot gun on top of a tank in the parade was again a nice contrast of youth paying respects to our fallen heros.
The reasons for Remembrance Day is for men such as Hugh Birks, who survived many battles to tell future generations. With the picture I used some overlays and special effects to focus on Hugh Birks and to give it sustenance.
The City of Brampton is very active in community events throughout the year, the preceding pictures are from a selection from what I have covered for ToughTimes.
I wanted a collection of pumpkins with all different colours and eerie looking faces. I used no flash as I wanted the natural colour to shine through. The best spot was in front of the fountain.
Again I used natural light, low shutter speed and I increased the ISO. For alterations I used some special effects and overlays to give the picture a more eerie feel to the shot.
AI wanted a picture of the group three together playing ta variety of instruments using recycled material. Such as pots and pans, pails and green bins.. I did user a little flash, but mostly using natural light.
Local towns always have their celebrities who have gone on to the bigger stage, that also goes for long time politicians such as Hazel McCallion from Mississauga.
Hurricane Hazel. The long running Mayor of Mississauga, led the Annual Streetsville's Bread & Honey Festival Parade for the last time as mayor. This was from2014, and I got this image at the start of the parade at the corner of Britannia & Queen Street.
I like this picture because it shows Gordan Smith pointing towards his star on the day Brampton celebrated the 2015 inductees to The Walk Of Fame, with a big smile. Gordan Smith is famous for makeup to the stars and on several Hollywood movies.
This is my passion as a photographer, I love hockey. Back in the 1980's I took several great pictures of NHL stars (Gretzky, Lafleur, Denis Savard etc) from going to many games either at Maple Leaf Gardens, The Montreal Forum, or the Aud in Buffalo. Now that NHL games especially, in Toronto are out of my price range, I like to attend the local team instead. Henceforth I have been attending many Brampton Beast games at the Powerade Centre and have a mitt full of great shots. This is just a sample.
To take these pictures of hockey games, the lighting in the building is extremely important. Before the game while the players are out for their warmups I will take tests shots in order to get the right exposure, and settings. Each rink is different, especially local arenas.
Brandon Marino is one of The Brampton Beast's best players, as he is always into the action. Here is anticipating a pass from a teammate, in an attempt to score.
In the crease is always a bee hive of activity in an action packed hockey game. The idea is to have the camera focused on the net as that is where a possible goal is likely to occur. The problem is that sometimes you miss the shot from something done behind the play.
Christmas is always a special time, and each town or city puts on a spectacular display, and activities. The preceding is a series of pictures that I took then by using special effects and overlays, I produced a series of my own Christmas Cards, to email, or send to family, friends , and associates. It beats buying the regular cards from a store, and by doing my own, there is a sense of pride that goes with it.
The next series of pictures which I call "Christmas in Brampton", has been altered with overlays, special effects to give each picture a Christmas Card effect. I have used this technique to make my own Christmas cards, and a special Christmas Card Video which will follow the stills.
This was taken during the Santa Claus Parade in Brampton. I wanted snow, but the weather man didn't cooperate, so I invented some snow by using special effects and overlays. But it was cold out.
This is another one of my Christmas Card collection. This one is a shot of Rose Theatre in Brampton with the lighted Christmas tree as the foreground and the Theatre in the back. Increase of the OSA low exposure and using a tripod snapped this shot. Then preceded to add overlays and special effects to create this card.
This is a story I covered on behalf of The Knight's Table in Brampton and as well for ToughTimes. The Knight's Table is an organization, that helps feed the needy throughout the year. During the festive season of Christmas many of the patrons who are struggling, it can be a very depressing time. The Knight's Table also helps out by eleviating the stress by not only giving comfort through food but also to soothe the weary soul by having groups such as the group above to make the season a little more bright
One event that captured many people in the GTA, Ontario, and the nation was The Toronto Blue Jays run for the pennant in 2015. A hot spot in Brampton was Garden Square. With the big screen and adjacent from Rose Theatre (who put this together) this became the focal point for Blue Jay fans, for the community of Brampton. It was like being at The Roger's Centre, but without the hassle of driving down and the expense. The Square turned into a carnival, with music inbetween innings, games for the kids, and raffles. It was the place to be in Brampton during the months from August to the middle of October when the Kansas City Royals put the lights out for any Blue Jay dreams of getting back to the World Series. When Batista hit the homerun to catapult the Jays ahead of The Texas Rangers to basically clinch the series, the place went ballistic. I had a story and two pictures published in ToughTimes, including a picture that ended up on the front page.
Garden Square in Brampton was the place to be during The Blue Jays run for the pennant and thru both playoff series. These two pictures were published in ToughTimes December Issue. I wanted to capture the crowd viewing the screen from the back and I used Rose Theatres steps the capture it. Sorry for the Texas Rangers, it should have been Blue Jays.
This picture was published in the December 2015 edition of the ToughTimes Newspaper, along with a story that I had written. (Sorry for the Texas Ranger on the screen)
This was a hard picture to take, as Garden Square was swarmed with over 15,000 people to bring in the New Year. I was at the front of the stage to watch The Sam Robert's Band and after they finished, I needed to move further back inoder to get the fireworks. Well I actually went around a block instead of cramming my way through the crowd. When I got to Main Street it was swarmed with people, so I bustled my way through. To take the pictures of the fireworks, lowered my shutter speed increased the OSA, and using continuous shooting, held the camera up and literally hoped for the best. This is one of the results.
Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoyed the show.
