The HCAHPS survey is a standardized survey used to measure patient experience that hospitals must administer annually. It contains 27 questions, including a rating of the hospital overall from 0 to 10. Hospitals must survey 300 patients per year and make results publicly available. Failure to report results can result in a 2% penalty in Medicare payments. The first public reporting of HCAHPS results occurred in March 2008 on the website HospitalCompare.
