Oppenheimer Film Discussion for Philosophy and Film
Final feedback and exam prep
1. New and digital media have contributed to the
process of globalisation: the idea that the world
is becoming increasingly interconnected through
one global culture.
Using your own case study, evaluate the impact
that new and digital media have had on
globalisation
2. • Make it clear which case study you are using, in
this instance – social media. This will make the
connection between your examples clearer.
• Don’t say: ‘....Zoella.....Cyberbully.....Caitlin
Jenner....’
• Do say: ‘Globalisation has flourished as a
concequence of the continued developments in
new and digital media. My case study on Social
media demonstrates...’
feedback
3. • Link back to the question.
This stops you going off on a tangent and makes
your work more concise and to the point.
feedback
4. • Pros AND cons.
Cons can be from the same example (in fact, this often makes a stronger answer)
Don’t: Kylie Jenner’s lip challenge is a positive example of globalisation
because....
However fake news of the inauguration of Donald Trump is a negative example
because....
Do: A facebook user in America live streamed their partner being shot and
killed by a police officer as he reached for his drivers licence. The globalised
nature of this live platform enabled a global audience to consume the text
and share it instantly. This reinforced the black lives matter movement by
highlighting the unjust treatment of the black community by authority
figures in the US. This enables independent producers to highlight news of
interest to minority groups that may not be reported by the established
media. This makes audiences more aware and informed on topics they may
not have been exposed to otherwise.
However, the graphic and violent nature of the footage can cultivate
desensitization in audiences. Young audiences have access to live platforms
like facebook. Without clear regulation, this could arguably have a
hypodermic needle effect on impressionable audiences.

5. • Be selective about your examples
-If you have a strong argument based on that text
that supports or challenges the question – use it.
-If it clearly connects to your other examples – use
it.
-If it feels like a throw in and you struggle to
connect it to the point – leave it out.

6. feedback
• Explain how the theory is evident and the
impact of that theory in the example.
Don’t just say: ‘this is two step flow.’
Instead say: ‘This two step flow demonstrates how
audiences can be impressionable. Opinion
leaders like Katy Hopkins can greatly influence
her Twitter followers, most of whom have an
accepted reading of her tweets and newspaper
column. This is evident in the hundreds of
retweets and comments that she received in
response....’
7. Read through the example
paragraph
New and digital media has seen the development of
platforms such as Facebook Live. This enables
audiences to produce and share content with a
global audience. In 2016, a woman called Diamond
Reynolds used it to broadcast her partners death as
he was shot by Police. This demonstrates citizen
journalism and appeals to audiences for cognitive
reasons.
New and digital media have contributed to the process of globalisation: the idea that
the world is becoming increasingly interconnected through one global culture.
Using your own case study, evaluate the impact that new and digital media have had
on globalisation
8. Pros Cons
Globalisation
Pro Cons
FB Live
stream
Shines light on a topic that may not be shared
by the established media.
-Appeals to a niche audience
-Represents a possibly under represented
group
-Empowers individual producers (Citizen
journalism)
-Helps to challenge dominant ideologies about
groups/identities
-Harder to regulate because
it is live/instantaneous
-Can be accessed by
potentially
vulnerable/inappropriate
audiences
-Hypodermic needle
(passive audiences)
-Active audiences may have
an oppositional reading
-Moral panic
-Technological determinism
(effects behaviour in a
negative way?)
