Expertus Reveals Insightful Resource for Learning Organizations Looking to
Implement a Learning Portal
Practical Presentation Offers Real-life Examples and Explanations of Web 2.0 Learning Portals
Expertus (www.expertus.com), a global provider of services that optimize the business impact of learning,
today released a presentation that explores Web 2.0 learning portals as a way to better reach employees,
customers and external stakeholders. With a distinct focus on the extended enterprise, the presentation offers
a view into what organizations are doing – and where they’re headed – using the power of learning portals. To
view it for free, visit http://www.brainshark.com/brainshark/vu/view.asp?pi=291378388.
In a study conducted by Expertus and Training Industry, Inc., researchers found that within the next two years,
45 percent of survey respondents plan to upgrade their existing learning portal and 14 percent plan to launch a
new learning portal. Given the broad interest in this technology, Expertus created a presentation that explores
the practical uses of portals. The 22-minute presentation, narrated by industry expert Kathleen Waid, offers
research findings, definitions and real-life examples.
“Learning portals have taken on a new definition and are no longer just a website for training,” said Mohana
Radhakrishnan, VP of Client Services for Expertus. “Companies can jump right into on-demand, Web 2.0
learning and effectively reach all learners if their portal is appropriately designed.”
Expertus’ and Training Industry, Inc.’s “2009 Study on Learning Portals Informal Learning Technologies”
can be viewed at http://www.trainingefficiency.com/system/files/Survey-Results_Learning-Portals-Expertus_

Expertus also recently published a white paper that explores Web 2.0 learning portals as dynamic digital
environments that make learning more effective and accessible for channel partners and customers.

68% of Training Professionals Report Their Learners Would Give Their Learning
Technology a Grade of C or Below
Expertus (www.expertus.com), a global provider of services that optimize the business impact of learning,
today announced the results of a recent poll conducted among learning leaders. The results found that a
whopping 68 percent of learning professionals believe their learners would give their learning technology a
grade of C or below.
The poll, which was conducted in March, consisted of one-question: What grade would your learners give to
your learning technology that they interact with? With more than 70 responses, there was a clear inclination
towards the failing grades, with the results as following:
-- A 15%
-- B 17%
-- C 37%
-- D 20%
-- F 11%
“This poll was very revealing in that we asked learning leaders to put themselves in the shoes of their learners
and they are seemingly honest about the improvements that need to be made in their learning technology,”
said Ramesh Ramani, founder and CEO of Expertus. “Due to the nature of the poll, we didn’t have the
opportunity to dig deeply into what was causing the poor grades, but this shows an obvious gap that needs to
be filled by technology that improves the learning experience.”

34. The Abundant Value Proposition of Learning 2.0 Portals | Gary Bragar
May 19, 2010
In my February 11 blog on “The Buzz about Learning 2.0 Portals,” I referenced research conducted by Expertus
and Training Industry, Inc., which found that within the next two years, 45 percent of survey respondents plan
to upgrade their existing learning portal and 14 percent plan to launch a new learning portal. And based on the
results of a Learning BPO research study I recently launched, this comes as no surprise as the value of learning
portals is becoming increasingly clear.
Learning 2.0 portals have a lot of functionality and can deliver significant benefits to the end-user company
and its employees. Here is just a sampling of what I found to be noteworthy capabilities per a recent demo of
Expertus’ customizable, web-based, social learning platform:
• The ability to consolidate learning information from what may be multiple legacy systems into one
portal to view:
« All mandatory company training programs along with due dates, a brief description and time required,
and a click-of-a-button launch of a selected training program
« Recommended learning and ratings by peers who have already taken programs. Imagine the value of
this, for example, to a salesperson who has to quickly learn about a new product for an upcoming meeting
with a prospect
« The latest blog on topics related to specific interest areas or job functions
• The ability to obtain insights from and ask questions of peers via a chat feature within the portal
• The ability to access subject matter experts 24 x 7 – via the portal – for assistance when new learning
programs are launched and a question arises. Imagine…no more needing to determine who to email or
call and then waiting for a response, or getting caught in an IVR menu jungle
• The ability to link training to talent management and create career paths and development plans, etc.
Need tangible proof of the value of learning 2.0 portals? One Expertus client achieved in four months a 388
percent increase in course registration volume, a 178 percent increase in new courses offered, and an increase
of 123 percent for new learner registrations.
Of course there are many learning 2.0 portal providers in today’s marketplace, including Norway-based
Edvantage Group which just yesterday announced a contract to provide a learning portal for MOT. MOT
is an educational organization working with young people in Norway and South Africa to improve school
environments via social learning methods such as peer-to-peer communication, exercises, stories, role playing
and dialogues with other young people.
A word of advice here to buyers. If/when you decide to implement a learning 2.0 portal, don’t pick a provider
based solely on its technology offering, as technology is only as good as it is used. You’ll want a provider that
can teach you how to or manage for you: 1) putting all the different learning environments, curricula and social
networking functionality into the portal; 2) ensuring that content is continually updated; and 3) communicating
the value of the portal throughout the enterprise, and conducting virtual learning demonstrations on how to
use and best leverage the portal.
page
35. You’ll also want to make decisions on other portal-based aspects such as whether you want to provide all
employees with unlimited access to learning or add in certain restrictions, whether all courses will be free or
some will be fee-based, etc. A savvy learning provider can guide you through these types of decisions and build
them into the system for you, as required.
Have you implemented a learning 2.0 portal? If so, I’d very much like to hear comments on your experiences,
what worked well, what didn’t, what challenges you encountered, how the portal has been received by your
employee base, the value you’ve achieved to date, etc.

News and Views On Real-Time Unified Communications
News in Brief
E-Learning company Expertus announced the launch of ExpertusONE, a new social learning platform
that brings together formal, informal, and collaborative learning for all audiences across the enterprise
– employees, customers and channel partners. ExpertusONE offers customized learning environments that
include communities of practice, expert networks, mentoring, personalized development plans, training
catalogs, course ratings, and instructional materials.
Here’s what Alan thinks: It takes some chutzpah to introduce a new Learning Management System (LMS) in
2010, after a time of industry consolidation and buyer confusion. But what Expertus has here is a cloud-based,
state-of-the-art LMS without the legacy issues faced by competitors like Saba, Plateau, SumTotal, and others.
I like the looks of how it integrates with existing LMS platforms to provide new social media capabilities not
present in some of the other platforms – and I also like the hosted services approach.
RHUB Communications intro’d TurboMeeting 4.2, the company’s flagship collaboration appliance software. The
web conferencing appliance features include multipoint camera capability (for both PC and Mac), allowing a
web conference host to enhance the connection between participants by displaying webcam images of up to
four attendees at once. The new version also includes complete Outlook integration, a High Availability Backup
option for mission-critical collaboration sessions, seminar registration (for capturing attendee contact info prior
to the beginning of any seminar), seminar polling, and advanced LDAP directory integration. The company also
added three appliances targeted at the mid- sized enterprise and increased the capacity of enterprise-level
offerings.
Wainhouse Research is running its annual Unified Communications survey, which asks about how your
organization has deployed its unified communications and collaboration solution. Completing the survey
should take between 5 - 8 minutes. Everyone completing the survey will be entered into a drawing for TEN $50
amazon.com gift certificates to be awarded separately, and will be emailed an invitation to download selected
highlights of the survey results. IF you are an end user of unified communications solutions and would like to
participate, take the survey here.
Emblaze-VCON, while struggling in North America, has added Dynamic Communications as a distributor for
South Africa (the country that is so much in the news these days). In an unrelated announcement Emblaze-
VCON was selected for a large project with China Trancomm Technologies, a Chinese governmental company
dealing with transportation.
Wainhouse Research co-founder Marc Beattie was recently part of a panel discussion on collaboration on
Bloomberg BusinessWeek. Check it out.

43. Put Leadership Training on the Front Burner | Lynn Taylor
July 30, 2010
The recession prompted corporations to cut leadership programs, and the deficiency will show up—in their
bottom lines
When organizations worldwide took belt-tightening measures after the recession officially began in December
2007, training in general was on the chopping block—and along with it went leadership training. In a 2008
study conducted by learning service firm Expertus, 48 percent of the 84 corporate and government training
professionals surveyed reported they were slashing their 2009 training budgets. That was up from 41 percent
the previous year.
As the recession progressed, organizations continued cutting these programs. A 2009 article in The National
Law Journal noted: “Leadership consultants said that firms are reducing leadership training, scaling back earlier
training commitments.”
Now that the economy is showing signs of strength, it’s time to bring back leadership training.
KEEPING WEEDS IN CHECK
A protracted lack of training is much like a neglected garden; ultimately, weeds stifle and choke organizational
growth. Over the past three years, job insecurity and economic uncertainty have dampened morale. Add to
that the lack of leadership training and cohesive guidance from top management, and you have a double drain
on productivity.
During lean times, managers have been in crisis mode, not taking the time to motivate or follow the corporate
vision, but rather maintaining the status quo instead. People skills have fallen to last place on the priority list,
and the company vision broadcast in 2006 is stated nowhere but on some dusty rolled-up poster.
Now imagine how a new leadership training program, even a modest one, can provide much-needed
manicuring to the untended garden. Your chief executive—the landscape architect—should initiate the effort
via a vision of growth and innovation and ultimately, greater profits.
WHEN RESULTS CAN BE IMMEDIATE
Organizations may have cut funds for training, but they may not be able to afford putting it off forever. Perhaps
the myth still exists that leadership training is a costly, time-consuming measure with only long-term gain—
when in fact, relatively low-cost measures can reap immediate results.
For example, you could give a one-day workshop on strategic growth initiatives, motivating staff through
enhanced communications or improving skills for virtual-team leadership. Sure, this will mean time spent
planning the workshop and perhaps money invested in hiring an outside facilitator, but it could contribute to
the bottom line in hours. A motivated salesperson, invigorated by a sales manager’s genuine public praise one
morning, can easily precipitate a sales spike that afternoon.
Other good subject matter for leadership training sessions includes: implementing career pathing for
page
44. employees; setting objectives and expectations and monitoring them among staff; delegating tasks to others;
team building and creating a sense of community; mentoring and helping teams maximize their potential; and
establishing alignment with business and personal goals.
These days, businesses have a segment of employees inspired to work only because they want to keep their
jobs. But as employment improves, survival won’t be enough to compel them to leap out of bed in the
morning.
A KEY TO INVIGORATING EMPLOYEES
Leaders must know how to motivate their teams to work for mutual success and the larger success of the
company. Even with the economy still faltering, more progressive companies are considering restarting
leadership training. They recognize it as a wise investment in creating an invigorated workforce.
Researchers from Harvard and McGill universities carried out a six-year global study of companies that sought
improved working conditions at all levels of their business and managed to be profitable at the same time.
The researchers found that these companies—ranging in size from small outfits of 27 employees to Fortune 50
corporations of 126,000—knew how to support leadership at every level and how to listen to employees.
One company, Costco, found that developing the skills and talent of its employees helped recruitment and
improved the long-term quality of management.
Managers must include interpersonal intelligence in their leadership tool kit. They must demonstrate that they
are trustworthy and transparent. In numerous studies conducted by our own firm, the “trust gap” between the
boss and employee is clearly evident. But the trust gap can be reset.
You can initiate the charge for leadership training in your company. Components of such a program may
include the following:
• Connecting with staff. Managers need good communication and emotional-intelligence skills—sensitivity to
people’s feelings and the ability to work through those feelings. Whereas many managers will do anything to
avoid conflict, emotionally intelligent ones thrive on confronting situations and resolving them.
• Making managers better coaches and mentors. Leaders should be trained by senior management and HR on
how to guide employees in their career development. Managers should carefully review policy manuals and
uphold expected “good character” standards and serve as role models for other employees. That also means
being open to suggestions and genuinely appreciating diverse opinions.
• Listening and giving feedback. When designing a training program, solicit managerial input as much as
possible. Ask frontline employees for their insights on what kind of corporate learning would make the
company more competitive, for example. Customer-facing employees possess a treasure trove of data that
is rarely mined sufficiently. If a client expresses interest in a modification to a product or service—but your
representative feels like a cog in a wheel who is too junior to act on such “high level” input—it can mean lost
revenue opportunities. In one study our firm commissioned, 93 percent of employees said that job satisfaction
improves when managers are receptive to new ideas and approaches.
• Having a clear vision. Make sure leaders understand the corporate vision and can enlighten employees
about it. If the company wants to focus on its hometown roots instead of its global capabilities, for example,
leadership training should outline that plan. If the company’s mission is stated clearly and often, it will help
guide employees in their thinking and create a sense of purpose.
page
45. • Understanding how parts make up the whole. Leaders need to learn how to communicate the company’s
big ideas and objectives to workers and to commend individuals for their contributions toward goals. For
example, a manager might say, “Your data mining project is really helping to increase sales, because we
can now target users with advertising better than ever before.” By keeping employees in the loop, leaders
constantly uplift and engage staff.
Companies that weed out bad practices and nourish new leaders will see renewed growth, yielding a
flourishing landscape of profits.

ExpertusONE Social Learning Platform Solves Issues With Irrelevant, Hard-to-Access
Channel Partner Training for Major Software Company
Global software companies are increasingly reliant on a network of partners to sell their products, so revenues
and profits deeply depend on resellers’ collective product knowledge and sales skills. However, a common
challenge for learning organizations is finding effective ways to provide relevant, accessible information to this
critical set of learners. Expertus, a global provider of products and services that optimize the business impact
of learning, recently announced the launch of ExpertusONE to help address this issue.
ExpertusONE (www.expertusone.com (http://www.expertusone.com) ) is a revolutionary new social learning
platform that brings together formal, informal and collaborative learning for all audiences across the enterprise
-- employees, customers and channel partners.
A well-trained channel partner sales force has numerous potential benefits, including increased training
revenue, product sales, and up-selling and cross-selling; reduced support costs, channel salesperson turnover,
and cost of sales; improved time-to-market, win ratios, and customer loyalty; and shortened sales cycles.
“A traditional LMS cannot support the fast-paced needs of a channel sales force, and just-in-time learning is
the only way to keep the extended enterprise educated,” said Ramesh Ramani, founder and CEO of Expertus.
“ExpertusONE answers the call, offering a learning ecosystem where relevant information can be organized and
dramatically presented to learners based on their needs, maximizing relevance and usability.”
A multinational software organization was an early adopter of ExpertusONE, and even helped in its
development. A full case study has just been published here: http://www.expertus.com/Results/Case-Files/
Social-Learning-Ecosystem-Strengthens-Software-Reseller-Relationships (http://www.expertus.com/Results/
Case-Files/Social-Learning-Ecosystem-Strengthens-Software-Reseller-Relationships) .
The organization partnered with Expertus to create a single, engaging learner experience for its more than
3,000 channel partners, but it couldn’t be one-size-fits-all. Its distributors and resellers generate software
revenue on every continent in the world and the new platform had to account for major variations in language,
product-focus, region and industry. Their criteria included:
1. Support a diverse, global audience with content delivered in 13 regional views and 10 localized languages.
2. Integrate training offered through four unrelated enterprise systems into one centralized learning
environment.
3. Provide on-demand 24/7 worldwide access to virtual training and e- learning content that could be accessed
regardless of bandwidth constraints, both within a reseller environment and in the various countries in which
they operate.
4. Incorporate meaningful social elements, such as interactive course ratings and comment capabilities, so
resellers could share opinions and collaborate with other channel partners.
5. Ability to automatically assign learning paths to resellers based on the role, geography, industry vertical and
product authorization. Since the resellers’ roles changed quickly or in many cases had “matrixed” roles, this
plan had to be dynamically calculated and displayed. page
47. Despite an aggressive timeline, Expertus delivered a flexible and scalable global reseller environment. The
customer is now able to globally share critical new product information and personalized training plans content
-- quickly and easily -- all under one platform. Most importantly, the time it takes to roll out new training has
decreased by 30-40 percent.
In addition, usage statistics indicate a growing reseller reliance on the new platform as a central learning
resource. Within one year after the launch of ExpertusONE, the organization experienced:
“We ended with an innovative solution that transformed how our channel partners learn in a very short
amount of time,” said a senior manager with the company. “ExpertusONE brings together learners into a single
ecosystem and delivers a knowledgeable sales force -- that’s no easy feat.”

Global Software Giant Taps ExpertusONE for Impactful, Innovative Virtual
Instructor-Led Events
For a learning organization, the world of successful virtual ILT can be a beautiful destination as long as
landmines are avoided along the way. Increasingly more learning leaders are embracing the promise of virtual
ILT based on its potential effectiveness and deep cost savings over traditional ILT. With the right road map,
it’s a literal goldmine. However, the key is to find the right tour guide who can rise above virtual ILT’s inherent
weaknesses.
A worldwide software organization recently selected Expertus to build a global virtual ILT program that would
prepare their sales force for new product rollouts and help avoid the pitfalls of similar training programs. The
platform required a savvy architecture as it aimed to educate highly technical sales architects who require
quality technology-based programs. ExpertusONE(TM) was used to host live events around the globe and offer
many engaging elements, including live chat with international subject matter experts, hands-on labs, virtual
classrooms, online proctors, tech support and much more.
The benefits of a well-executed virtual ILT program are enormous:
-- Incredible cost savings. The company is primed to save up to $5 million by drastically cutting worldwide
travel and event budgets because of virtual offerings that still deliver results.
-- Wider reach of training programs. ExpertusONE will allow the organization to reach the far corners of the
earth with training programs. With even a couple weeks of virtual ILT per year, relevant programs can be
accessible around the world to employees and the extended enterprise.
But ExpertusONE takes virtual ILT to another level, addressing its biggest weaknesses. Virtual ILT can be
viewed as a discrete training episode or face difficulty maintaining participant focus and participation. The
ExpertusONE platform averts these issues by providing a comprehensive and engaging online environment that
combines the best of virtual ILT with eLearning, user-generated content, collaboration and virtual facilitation
and proctoring.
“During the shift to virtual ILT, it was important to avoid losing learners and credibility, so ExpertusONE offered
not only a safety net, but an improved ecosystem from traditional ILT,” said Ramesh Ramani, founder and CEO
of Expertus (www.expertus.com). “By shifting dollars and focus from in-person meetings to highly practical
and impactful virtual classrooms, we have removed the hassle and costs of travel, improved productivity in the
workplace, and heightened training adoption.”
In addition to the successful virtual ILT program, Expertus complemented the program with additional services,
including comprehensive marketing programs that promote training opportunities to employees and logistics
support, including invitations, registration and employee progress reports.

Expertus Wins a Coveted Gold “Learning In Practice” Award for Excellence in
Outsourcing
Expertus, a leading provider of software and services that optimize the business impact of learning, recently
submitted a case study for its work with a global oil field services provider and won the GOLD award for
Excellence in Outsourcing at CLO Magazine’s Learning In Practice awards ceremony last Tuesday. Expertus and
the organization collaborated to develop solutions to achieve full compliance of required employee training
and support a growing, global workforce.
Expertus’ client, a Fortune 250 with more than 34,000 global employees and multiple business units,
developed a centralized shared service model that would solve a multitude of learning administration issues.
Together, they developed the processes and infrastructure to successfully handle ongoing LMS support,
including improved training administration and registration, report and logistics management.
In addition, Expertus established the following:
• Key contacts in 16 hard-to-reach countries and a process of identifying non-compliant learners,
delivering the training via CD, and capturing the completions for those who were in these remote areas
with limited internet connectivity.
• A 24/5 support team with processes flexible enough to adapt to the company’s unique needs. This
resulted in a smooth transition where the various learning constituents were able to basically retain
their processes and also benefit from improved support.
• Reports, dashboards and charts that made it simple for country managers to track compliance and push
non-compliant employees to complete their training.
The results of the program were quite successful. Within 60 days, Expertus helped the organization improve
their compliance to a record 99.8 percent. In the first year of the engagement, Expertus successfully:
• Increased the 48-hour help desk ticket resolution to more than 98 percent
• Completed more than 1,200 learner transcript updates
• Created 2,136 new classes
• Completed 1,924 requests and 1,419 inquiries
• Ran 1,687 reports (ad-hoc and specialized)
• Marked completions for 12,397 learners
Although this centralization initiative was not focused on reducing costs, a side benefit was a reduction in the
cost of learning administration of more than 40 percent, combined with an increase in the responsiveness of
learner support.
