WHAT IS EXTRUSION and SPHERONIZATION?
Extrusion and Spheronization is used in the pharmaceutical,
catalyst, petrochemical and other related industries for the
production of small evenly sized round pellets
The process is used to create solid particles in a uniform
shape and size for a wide variety of uses
Extrusion and Spheronization is a really useful technique for
manufacture of small regularly shaped particles

HOW DOES THE PROCESS OF EXTRUSION AND
SPHERONIZATION WORK
MIXING
The active ingredients are mixed with the excipients in a dry
form to create a powder blend
This powder is then mixed with a liquid binder in a process
called Wet Massing or Granulation
EXTRUSION
produces a spaghetti-like extrudate, which is then passed into
the Spheronizer to divide it up in to spheroids of uniform size
and a spherical shape

EXTRUSION and SPHERONIZATION โ Granulation
Granulation consistency can have a significant effect on the
final product properties such as hardness, friability
cohesiveness and resilience
The final product generally needs to be durable so they do not
crumble and disintegrate in transition from production line to
the final use
The active ingredient and excipients mix needs to have the
required consistency for the final product to be adhesive,
cohesive and resilient to be suitable for its final use

EXTRUSION and SPHERONIZATION โ Pelletization
Converts powder blends into pellets through the process of dry
mixing, granulation, spheronization and drying
The pellets or granules of active materials are generally small,
free-flowing, spherical units called pellets, beads or sometimes
microspheres
Generally materials are made up of multiple pellets and have
many advantages over solid material or granulations
containing particles of variable sizes and density.
