A Positive and Negative Effect on Tourism By Chelsea Mulanix 8/4/10
Increased Number of Retirees In the United States, 14% of travelers are retired. The average citizen is starting to retire at an earlier age. In the next few years, 70 million Americans will be retiring. With a set pension, or a guaranteed income, traveling is readily available for the retired person.
Why are Retirees Traveling? Retirement Villages These villages have been increasingly popular in the US and Caribbean and cater specifically to retirees. With all the amenities of a gated community which keeps all visitors safe. Demand for Greater Quality of Life Since the average retiree has worked for the past 30-50 years, they value their dollar and want the best quality for it. They have the greater spending power and a higher standard of living. Discounts and Special Offers The rate of special offers and discounts for retirees and mostly for people over the age of 65 have greatly increased throughout the world and especially in the Caribbean.
Positive Effect of Retiree Tourism Since retired people are more likely to have a fulfilling experience at their destinations, they are less likely to cause altercations, or engage in illegal activity. The majority of retired travelers spend their money on a wide variety of businesses. A younger traveler would mainly spend their money on popular attractions, and food and drink. Retired tourists have more money to spend with reasons to spend them like: gifts for relatives, keepsakes, and memorabilia, which promote the local economy. Some retirees want to see the world and travel to different places and promote the world GDP. Other retired travelers like the simplicity and consistency of the same place. They would be monetarily supporting the same nation or state each vacation.
Negative Effects of Retirement Tourism Even though the retired traveler does not cause many problems within the destination they are visiting, that does mean that they have been the victims of crime, in many cases, in places like Mexico. Retired persons are more likely to not be completely open to new culture. Their attitudes to certain religions and cultures tend to lean towards close-mindedness. The retirement resorts would try and accommodate these views by removing culture and local religion from visitors’ view which could devastate local society. Since retired travelers usually have longer stay, or semi-permanent stay, their health conditions may become a problem during their stay, this could be categorized as a positive because they will either be seeking medical care at their destination, or they will want to cut their trip short to return to their home town for medical attention.
Travel Hassles and Security Recently, the problems with the security travel, especially with airline travel, have increased drastically. Many people have complained and have tried to find other methods of transportation because of the restrictions at airports. The list of rules, methods, and random security checks discourage travelers who do not often take planes. Other transportation methods do not provide enough security for most travelers, such as public busses, subways, or Greyhounds. The crime rates and disturbing nature that can happen on these systems decrease the amount of average citizens who would prefer these to planes or taxies.
List of Airline Items That Will Confiscated if Carried on Planes Cricket Bat Hockey Sticks Golf Clubs Screwdrivers Wrench Pliers Lighters Any liquid or gel over 3.4 oz Scissors bigger than 4 in Gel shoe inserts These rules apply to wrapped Christmas presents, and to the centimeter or tenth of an ounce when it comes to the lengths and volumes. There are many family travelers and sporting travelers who are inconvenienced by these restrictions and have had bad experiences which discourage further travel.
Crime and Security in Other Methods of Transportation Subway systems are notorious for sexual harassment, rape, and robbery. Bus stops in major cities have many problems with underrated crime. Most of the crimes that happen at the bus stop go unreported. The only safety feature is that it is a well lit area, but outside that area leaves the dark city streets and neighborhoods invisible. Greyhound Bus Transportation System has had countless problems, including countless late buses, rude employees, dirty facilities, unsafe conditions, mechanical failures and accidents. There was a case against Greyhound recently where an employee kicked an elderly woman off the bus after expressing her dislike of the Greyhound Bus System.
Lack of Security and Other Dangers of the 2 Most Visited Hotspots Mexico is constantly being referred to as one of the most dangerous tourists spots for Americans. A known fact about Mexico is that they have a large problem with drugs. The drugs’ presence increases during spring break when they tourists want to partake in drugs during their vacations. In 2008, Spring Breakers were advised not to visit Mexico because of a dangerous drug war. Florida attractions are known for drawing petty thieves and pick pocketers. The robberies and reported stolen items skyrocket during peak seasons. Cars, wallets, purses, merchandise, and valuables are stolen in a less aggressive manner, but there are more frequent cases.
