8. This is a involved,
strange and magical
story about a girl who is
kidnapped, and a boy
who has special sight. It
intertwines reality and
fantasy, and the story
visits both the small
town where the boy
lives and the spellbound
outback where the girl is
being held captive. This
story has many turns, so
don’t expect to know
what will happen. Will
the boy be able to save
the girl?
10. This is a fantasy novel
and the first in a
triology. It is about six
outcasts and how they
have to come together to
accomplish an
incredible jail break. It
is set in an ominous
world and is full of
twists and turns so it
becomes very fast
paced, and ends
uncertainly and
suspensefully.
12. This is an adventure
story about two young,
strong heroines who
become friends and
have to run away. Thier
journey takes them
along the Oregon Trail
disguised as boys. It is
historical fiction full of
drama, tension, humor
and romantic yearnings,
with themes of diversity
and survival.
14. Like Bone Gap, this
book combines magic
and reality; the
heroine has wings. It
is Ava’s quest to find
out why she is
different. It is a
complex story about
three generations of
women and how love
can be hindered, but
prevails in the end.
15. Like Bone Gap this is a
complex story about
small town boys. The
story is told from two
perspectives; Cullen is
17 and just graduated
from high school, and
his little brother
disappears. Benton
Sage narrates the
second view, and finds
the book of Enoch. It
is more realistic and
sad than Bone Gap, yet
has an element of
humor.
16. Like Bone Gap this is a
story about a boy
searching for a
missing girl. Cody is a
small town boy who
has dropped out of
high school and finds
himself submerged
outside of his element
to solve a mystery.
This story is full of
complex characters,
yet it is a very fast
paced because it is a
thriller.
18. Ilovesports. Iplaybaseball!
In that case, I would suggest
Heat by Mike Lupica,
The Girl Who Threw Butterflies
by Mick Cochrane
or
Edenville Owls by Robert B. Parker
19. This is a fast-paced
story of a boy who has
a dream to pitch in the
Little League World
Series, but there are
obstacles standing in
his way. Michael and
Carlos’ parents have
passed away and the
two boys don’t want to
be separated because
they are underage.
This story is full of
dialogue and
believable characters,
and will satisfy any
sports fan.
20. Like the book, Heat
this story is about the
death of a parent and
how it changes the
whole world in the
eyes of a young teen.
Molly is an awkward
girl who is a baseball
pitcher and wants to
play on a boy’s team.
It is heartwarming
and enduring story
about growing up and
working out the
challenges that life
presents you.
21. This book isn’t about
baseball; it is about a
boy living just after
the second World War,
trying to put together
a school basketball
team. It gives you a
feeling of the language
and lifestyle in the
1940s. There is a bit
of a mystery to the
story and the team
uncovers a secret their
English teacher is
hiding. It has very
detailed basketball
action.
23. Set in Victorian London,
young Ciel Phantomhive
has made a deal with
the... his butler. This
graphic novel is
beautifully illustrated
with interesting
characters who find
themselves in
suspenseful situations.
Guess what? This is
book one in the series of
six!
24. Will is a young artistic
girl who creates lamps
because she is afraid of
the dark. She finds a
way to cope with the
death of her parents by
getting involved in an
art carnival. She
overcomes the terror of
hurricane Whitney, and
realizes she is strong
and happy. The
characters are quirky
and the illustrations are
expressive making them
very likeable.
25. This is a science fiction
graphic novel based on
the classic tale by
Madeleine L’Engle. It is
a story about a young
girl and her little
brother traveling
through space to rescue
their father. The
illustrations are
charatcter centered, and
the blue hued
backgrounds are
purposefully left blank
so reader’s can use their
imagination.
28. Great, I had fun talking about books with you.
Be sure to come back and let me know what you
thought of the book when you have finished. We
can talk about some other great books you might
enjoy too.
