Conservation means the wise
use of the earth and its
resources for the lasting good
of men. ~ Gifford Pinchot
Energy Conservation and Management Program
July 2007 thru January 2013
What We’ve Attained by the Cost Saving Numbers
Using our utility Energy CAP database to track utility usage,
costs, unit cost variations, daily weather, billing day cycles,
square footage changes, and building use adjustments, here
are our most current results for Electric, Natural Gas and Oil
cost savings:
September 2007 thru August 2008 – 17.3%...$261,680
September 2008 thru August 2009 – 25.65%...$481,787
September 2009 thru August 2010 – 30.05%...$657,425
September 2010 thru August 2011 – 30.08%...$660,502
September 2011 thru August 2012 – 34.57%...$739,429
September 2012 thru January 2013 – 33.6%...$269,007
(…the last line represents only 4 full months of savings and some
grant money earned in January…on our way to a record year in
energy savings for 2012-2013!)
Cost Savings to date: 28.6%... Plus special savings of $47,779 to
a current $3,069,829…approx. $517,329 ahead
of the projected 5 and ½ year savings estimate!!!
Our Energy Star Performance and Recognition
Owning a building that achieves top energy performance is a sign of good management, but owning a
portfolio of buildings that achieves continuous improvement in energy performance demonstrates
superior management and environmental leadership. Those ENERGY STAR partners who demonstrate
continuous improvement organization-wide, not just in individual buildings, qualify for recognition as
ENERGY STAR Leaders.
Energy Star Leader:
Chambersburg Area School District - K-12 Education – Pennsylvania
1 of 13 PA Energy Star Leader School Districts; 1 of 237 National K-12 Energy Star Leaders
Top Performer (2010)
20 Percent (2010) Energy Improvement
Top Performer (2011)
Top Performer (2012)
30 Percent (2012) Energy Improvement
***48 Current Energy Star Labels; every school has earned
Energy Star Labels for energy efficiency.
***17 more Labels are pending for 2012.
***Our current portfolio score is approx.
93 out of 100 with a 32%+ energy
Improvement.
Key Strategies Implemented via our Energy Conservation Efforts
• Regular building audits especially during unoccupied periods
• Organized holiday, weekend, and summer building shutdowns to conserve
energy
• Regular monitoring of computerized Energy Management System;
scheduling to optimize energy conservation
• Great partnership with CASD Building and Grounds Department to
implement and support our conservation efforts
• 4-day summer work weeks to gain up to 9, three-day weekends of energy
conservation the past 4 summers
• Summer Emergency Demand Response Program with 7 buildings…on call to
shut back power and earn $$ for freeing up electric power
• Benchmarking utility usage, costs, weather, building square footage and
usage variations info all tracked using Energy CAP database and Energy Star
Portfolio Manager
• Student outreach via many contest opportunities and classroom
presentations especially during October’s Energy Action Month and Earth
Day Month
• Regular communication via newsletters, web site, twitter, community
presentations, etc.
• Applied for and earned recognition of our district’s energy efforts via Energy
Star, Green Ribbon Schools, PA Governor’s Environmental Award,
Shippensburg University School Study Council, Maintenance Solutions
Magazine Award, PARSS Building Community Award, and other state and
national award programs and grants
A huge acknowledgement goes out to our
Building and Grounds, Technology, and
Food Service Departments. These
department employees have played a key
role in our energy savings success via their
support of our conservation initiatives
especially during unoccupied building
times…shutting down and powering off
equipment that does not need to be
running. THANK YOU TO ALL!!!
