  2. 2. What is the reality of the nuclear “football” and the launch codes? Not what you might think.
  3. 3. The Book of Truths Following are some of the truths from our history. We know about them now; after the fact.
  4. 4. The Book of Truths Jimmy Carter once sent the nuclear launch codes out with his laundry.
  5. 5. General Curtis LeMay strongly pushed for a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the Soviet Union. When President Kennedy took office and was finally briefed about the truth, he learned that there was indeed a ‘missile gap’. Except it was the United States that had the far greater capability.
  6. 6. When Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara instituted technical launch codes on nuclear weapons to prevent unauthorized deployment, the Strategic Air Command decided to over-ride that by setting all codes to 00000000. After all, that’s the Air Force.
  7. 7. We had ‘Green Light’ teams in Special Forces before the accuracy of cruise missiles. A Green Light team’s accuracy was parachuting in with a SADM (Special Atomic Demolition Munition), aka ‘backpack nuke’, and emplacing it on the target, then covering it with sniper fire. A question often debated: was there actually a delay once armed?
  8. 8. The first nuclear weapon the United States has officially admitted “losing” was in 1950, over Canada. The plane was found. The weapon still hasn’t been found. Sorry, Canada. Our bad.
  9. 9. The Pentagon reportedly removed President Nixon’s ability to launch nuclear weapons during his last days in office.
  10. 10. The Book of Truths When Ronald Reagan was shot, the codes were in his suit pocket and ended up on the emergency room floor, forgotten about.
  11. 11. The Book of Truths But there are other, deeper, darker, truths, that will never see the light of day. Included among them are Majestic-12, Area 51, Rifts, Fireflies, Cherry Tree, Pinnacle, the Nightstalkers, and ultimately, the existence of the Time Patrol.
