Gambiarra Favela Tech is a 10-day immersion program that teaches 12 young people from favelas and peripheries skills in programming, electronics, robotics, and crafts using repurposed materials. The program aims to empower participants and stimulate their creativity and problem-solving abilities. It includes workshops, lectures, visits to waste sites, and the development of personal and group projects. The goal is to promote these youths' creative talents and engagement with technology, highlighting the innovative spirit already present in their communities.
2. “Gambiologistas are waste collectors. For
them, all that remains is usable: toasters,
printers, iron bars, plates, ribbons and pieces
of anything.
They revive things, give new meaning
to useless objects and invent machines
randomly.
Other times, they invent functional machines
that are overcoming everyday adversities."

Methodology
11. For Whom?
The participants
The program is intended for young
participants or kids from peripheries and can
be adapted to different contexts.
There may be a selection process carried out
through open call or it can be also focused
on a previous chosen public. The
participants should be interested in putting
their hands dirty, filled with curiosity about
the universe of artistic creation and open to
the use of all kinds of techniques and
materials.
In open call processes, the selection is based
on submission of video, photo and
explanation of a "homemade invention",
which has already been made by the
applicant.
It is recommended financial scholarship for
participants, so they can fully devote to the
program and we can prevent evasion.
12. And who else?
Communication
In addition to the residency, the program
intends to stimulate a network around issues
such as appropriation of new technologies,
new artistic languages, social changes and
empowerment of young people from
peripheries.
Communication is a strategic axis of this
project. So photos and videos will be
recorded and will be available on social
networks of Olabi and Observatório de
Favelas.
The project has also a website and a blog.
Special communication actions can be
performed.

13. Goals
Expected results
Gambiarra Favela Tech focuses on the
process rather than the products that are
created. Still, "artistic installations" are
conceived, providing material for
collective exhibitions. The pieces may
present a conceptual and artistic character
or they can become useful products.
In addition, young people are engaged in a
project network, which is based on a group
on Facebook and WhatsApp, and they enter
into direct dialogue with other participants.
The program's goal is to promote an
experimental space for creative young
people from peripheries.
The program results are measured from the
narrative feedback from participants and the
successful stories that are collected.
14. Why?
This project stems from the recognition of
the extraordinary creative potential of
peripheries,
invention are made everyday.
As from the democratization of knowledge
about the use of technology, Gambiarra
Favela Tech intends to evoke in young
people a new look at their surroundings
and their own practices, empowering them
as protagonists in the
