5. A New Industrial
Revolution is in place.
Automation, internet of
things, 3D printing…
A new skill set is needed.
6. The Maker Movement
brings collaboration to
another level. Self-learning,
Shared knowledge, open
culture…
A new mindset is emerging.
7. Nearly 25% of today’s full
time employees will be
working on demand in the
near future. Radical changes
in the work environment are
a reality. How can we
respond to this?
8. New Zealand has a vision to
become an innovation
nation, less dependant on
agriculture and tourism.
NZ needs to attract and
retain talent
9. South Auckland has the
right ingredients:
abundance of creativity +
DIY culture.
Latent potential can be
unleashed
16. An initiative designed and led
by the South Auckland
community to develop a
generation of creative,
entrepreneurial, engaged and
purposeful people.
17. Tapping into already existing
projects, #makerhood creates
a platform for young South
Aucklanders to leapfrog from
unemployment and underpaid
jobs to the most valuable
skills in the world we are
living in.

41. COMBINATION OF ANALOG
AND DIGITAL TOOLS
It’s not about a new tool, but about the right tool for
each specific project. Combining traditional, industrial
and digital tools, students will be able to create
whatever they want.
42. CREATIVE ENVIRONMENT
TO DREAM AND PROTOTYPE
Driven by invention and imagination, The Base becomes
the place to aspire to, creating new possibilities and
inventing new things.
43. GLOBAL CONNECTION
Instant collaboration with different partners, from the
local and the global maker ecosystem, can provide skills
and resources, to guide projects and stimulate self
learning.
44. NETWORK OF MENTORS
The Base was designed to include groups, ideas,
entrepreneurs, specialists, members of the community
who can inspire and role model.
46. COMMUNITY NEEDS AT
THE CENTER
Fuel by its proximity with the communities, students will
be able to work on real briefs that come out of local
aspirations and needs.
56. BRINGS A SOLUTION TO A
REAL PROBLEM
Changes in waste collection mean families will pay
based on the amount of the waste generated.
57. IMMEDIATE BENEFIT
“We want to clean and fix the things you need, together
with you and your young sons and daughters”.
Our invitation is something with real value to any
community. (Plus, we’ve already run the idea by street
leaders in Otara, and they are fighting over who gets it
first).
58. FIXING UNLEASHES
CREATIVITY
As we work with young people and their families, they
will be able to unleash creative capital from within their
community. Young people will start to become creators,
not consumers.
59. INCOME POTENTIAL
Fixed materials, upcycled creations… there is a real
possibility of selling these pieces. And this is the start of
an entrepreneurial mindset and attitude.
60. BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
WITH THE COMMUNITY
Young people are influenced by their everyday
environment. The Pod takes the initiative to the
neighbourhoods and act as catalyst for relationships
between families.
67. OWNERSHIP
Oceania Career Academy, THE ROOTS and Community
Street Leaders will be leading the initial projects
together with mentors and partners.
68. ADDITIONALITY
Built on what already exists in South Auckland - social
entrepreneurs, institutions, industry connections.
69. LOW RISK START, HIGH
IMPACT
#makerhood already has a space and the resources to
implement it mapped. It will start with a lean and learn
approach and evolve by doing it.
