Cross-cultural communication is an essential element of
internationalization. The uneven distribution of nature's resources and the human
knowledge (expertise) required for transforming these raw materials into readily usable
products and services makes cross-cultural communication inevitable! ¨The
phrase cross-cultural communication describes the ability to successfully form, foster,
and improve relationships with members of a culture different from one's own. It is based
on knowledge of many factors, such as the other culture's values, perceptions, manners,
social structure, and decision-making practices, and an understanding of how members
of the group communicate--verbally, non-verbally, in person, in writing, and in various
business and social contexts, to name but a few.¨
A very good example is the case of the tallest man-made building in the world - The Burj
Khalifa in Dubai. Over 22 million man hours and 7500 skilled workers from different
countries took part in the construction of this structure. The amazing thing about this
diverse mixed of workers is the magnificent edifice they managed to bring into reality
despite language and many other cultural differences inherent in many of the companies
involved in the construction work. The scenario of the construction site could only be
compared to a mini city with its own economy functioning together and providing
different services such as restaurants, health, accommodation etc. A key element of this
success is the ability to communicate effectively not only across board but also between
the various smaller units coordinating the construction project.
Without good communication and understanding of needs and expectations between
entities whether in construction, business, politics, society, family etc. complications are
bound to take reign! Overcoming ineffective communication and language barriers
requires paying attention to the characteristics that is peculiar to each entity. According
to Kate Berardo, the following tips are important to steering through unhurt in an
international business environment or situation:
 Speak slowly and clearly
 Ask for clarification
 Frequently check for understanding
 Avoid idioms
 Be careful of jargon
 Define the basics of business
 Be specific
 Choose your medium of communication effectively
 Provide information via multiple channels
 Be patient

2. The world has no any other better alternative than to cooperate and work together in
order to create a better dwelling society. Understanding each through effective cross-cultural
communication is non-negotiable!
