Macro Socio-
Economical
& Historical
Context
- The South Asia region consists of: Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Maldives. Home to 1.5Billion people, who share a common culture, a common history, and
common ethnicities.
- For the last six decades India, Pakistan and more recently Afghanistan have been the centre-stage of regional instability. In 2001 the International community engaged in Afghanistan without a clear
road map for development or a clear strategy for counter insurgency. Consequently, security, politics and development initiatives operated un-coordinated and consequently the Afghan people saw
great wasteful expenditure, with no sustainable results from either the international community or their own government. As a result, the Taliban were able to re-surge and the Al Qaeda to re-
group in Afghanistan and in Pakistan; Both countries face a common threat from Islamist extremism and terrorism now.
- The collapse of state institutions in both countries brought US & Western Governments to designate Afghanistan & Pakistan as a single theatre of operations called AFPAK between 2008 and 2010.
They are geo strategically located at the entrance of the Persian and Arabian Gulf bordering China, both are a natural trade and energy corridor linking the Middle East to the West & Central Asia.
+ No coherent or cohesive public policy on the war on extremism in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Lack of strong political leadership and vision on key issues.
+ The moral authority of the state erodes, weak governance and response to a crumbling economy.
+ Absence of the rule of law, growing law & order insecurity. Populations are desperate for drastic change; and seek peace, economic and social security.
+ People driven to despair, look to Islamic Shariah as “The Solution” to substitute a failing and corrupt democratic governance ; Islamic ideology offers remedy and alternative “New Order”
+ Secular democratic forces are in disarray; Moderate voices drown in the sea of extremist rhetoric. Hard and soft power can succumb to extremist control.
+ The region and the world faces the gravest challenge of the 21st century, it must preserve Pakistan and Afghanistan as part of the moderate mainstream of global society.
