     AIA Provider #xxxx
      Course #GG101
Learning Objectives: at the end of this program, participants will be able to:

1. Understand the various types and applications of decorative
   glass

2. Understand the performance capabilities of decorative glass

3. Understand how to evaluate and specify decorative glass

4. Understand how decorative glass offers sustainability and
   contributes to LEED design
Today, design professionals have unlimited options
when designing with decorative glass without giving
up performance.

Decorative glass offers custom and standard
options allowing the creation of unique one-of-a-
kind designs for both interior and exterior glazing
applications.

New technologies offer state-of-the-art quality and
durability at a relatively inexpensive price point.

Editor's Notes

  1. Textured glass adds visual interest and varying levels of opacity to just about any application by creating a subtle shifting of light.  Perfect for furniture, shower enclosures, privacy windows and more, standard textured glass is a very economical option.  Produced by pressing semi-molten glass between two metal rollers to imprint a distinct pattern, textured glass diffuses light creating new opportunities for conceptual freedom and design.
  2. acid-etched glass products offer a wealth of opportunities to architects, interior designers and decorators. The consistent quality, durability and rich look of Textures products is unmatched. Walker TexturesTM glass creates a translucent satin appearance which obscures view while maintaining a high level of light transmittance.Acid-etched glass products offer a wealth of opportunities to architects, interior designers and decorators. Etching cream or liquid is applied to glass in a pattern, using a brush freehand, or contact paper or stencils. The acid in the cream reacts with the surface of the glass, leaving a frosted effect when it is washed off.Acid-etched Glass AdvantagesConsistent finish and appearanceMaintenance freeMore mar-resistant than sandblasted glassDoes not peel or discolor like filmsDoes not scratch off like coatings
  3. LAPD building demonstrates environmental leadership and community connection, while meeting seismic requirementsConsidered the most expensive building of its kind, the $437 million Los Angeles Police Administration Building also is among the greenest, thanks in part to Wausau Window and Wall Systems.©Tim GriffithIn May 2010, the building earned Gold certification under the LEED® Green Building Rating System™ for new construction. The LAPD Headquarters project also was recognized in 2009 with the American Institute of Architects’ presidential honor award for “Building Team of the Year” and in June 2010 with the “Q Award” from the Alliance for Quality Construction.Along with the custom silk-screened glass, the curtainwalls’ deep sightlines and shadow boxes add visual interest to the façade. Similarly, the window pattern avoids a grid-like layout in favor of an open, yet secure, staggered arrangement. For these 429 ‘punched’ openings, Wausau supplied factory-glazed, custom windows. “These were specifically designed for this project with a very thin metal profile along the side of the pre-cast opening. Each opening consisted of a pre-glazed, two-section window with the upper portion of the window in front of a pre-cast panel to accommodate quick, safe installation from the building’s interior,” explains Beidle.
  4. More and more architects and decorators are seeking ways to work with materials that enable them to personalise their projects and contracts. Cridecor is a printed and laminated glass which enables its users to create their own style and image for each contract. Its main characteristic is its design flexibility. Advantages The main advantage of this architectural glass is that it is a laminated pane. This means that the design of a printed glass pane can be combined with the protection and safety of laminated glass. Cridecor panes are printed on the inside of one of the two laminated panes, in order to ensure that the paint remains completely protected and unchanged.
  5. Crisunid California is a high-technology laminated glass with a solar control film (50 µ thick) that is placed between two interlayers of PVB. Its main feature is the way it selectively controls infrared solar energy, while giving high visible- light transmission. Advantages • Over 70% light transmission. • Over 50% solar heat reflection. • 99% ultraviolet protection. • Soundproofing properties. • Safety and impact resistance. • The reflecting surface is protected against any external attack. • The same security level with less thickness, if compared with a current laminated glass (example: 66/3= 666/2). • Energy savings through reduced air-conditioning requirements. • Savings of electric light costs. • Savings in solar control accessories, such as curtains, blinds, awnings, etc. • Savings in glass thickness.
  6. Channel glass is composed of long, narrow "U"-shaped linear cast-glass channels. It is suitable for daylighting because the glazing can be installed vertically or horizontally with an extruded metal frame around the perimeter, enabling uninterrupted vertical spans of up to 23 feet. Manufacturers offer the glass in a range of colors and textures with varying translucency, allowing for the passage of natural light without loss of privacy, and with either tempering or filming options available to meet impact safety requirements. Channel glass provides warm, diffuse light for interior spaces and, because of its shape, the glazing system can achieve very tight radiuses or can be used in curving or serpentine applications. Intermediate vertical mullions are generally not required for vertical installations. Additional benefits include adaptability to seismic code requirements. For the Scottsdale W Hotel and Residences, Starwood's first W Hotel in Arizona, San Francisco-based Hornberger + Worstell Architects were tasked with creating a state-of-the-art hotel living room, a signature feature of W Hotels worldwide. A key design challenge was creating a space that flows well from the portecochere entry and incorporates natural light while keeping out the Arizona heat, which often hovers above 100 ºF.
  7. Santa Monica Civic Center Parking Structure Design in Glass AwardFirst LEED-Certified Parking Garage in the U.S. Recognized for Architectural Use of GlassPassaic, NJ - March 20, 2008 - The Lamberts channel glass provided by Bendheim Wall Systems, Inc. for the Santa Monica Civic Center Parking Structure in California recently earned it the 2007 "Design in Glass" Award from the Glass Association of North America (GANA). The award recognizes excellence in the use of glass in architectural design. The Santa Monica Civic Center Parking Structure is the first LEED-certified garage in the United States. Designed by Moore Ruble Yudell Architects, the building features tempered, back-painted Lamberts Prismasolar® texture channel glass set in a custom frame system. The colored channel glass pieces are angled to act as a rain screen and provide proper ventilation while adding intricacy and light to the six-story pre-cast concrete parking structure.
