CORRUPTION IN KENYA, THE LONG-LASTING IMPACT OF A CURSE
BY DUNCAN ISAIAH ODUOR O. ABWAO
MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS LECTURER
St. Paul’s University
PART ONE
Corruption in Kenya began as a simple sweet pie and what has just
emerged is that the majority of citizens at the time appeared ignorant to
comprehend its impact and everlasting permanent future consequences.
The investment since Independence has been that Kenyans ought to get
rich and acquire quite some millions in whichever means and whichever
capacity depending on one’s ability within the shortest time period
possible. The ignorant population despite acquiring some basic
knowledge in schools had no idea why those entrusted with leadership
were so much into grabbing whatever they may lay their hands upon. The
message which got into the people’s mind back then was that land had to
be grabbed even it means death or displacement of thousands of Kenyans.
The minds of the local population soon got polluted and Kenya
immediately gave birth to one of the societies which would later be termed
as the most corrupt in the entire globe. It is a gone society and the country
called Kenya is just surviving on the edge. Those who were tasked to rule
Kenya at the dawn of independence had to part ways simply because of
harboring different opinions on how to tackle the monster called
corruption. The bitter fell off soon led to the destruction of the careers of
some Kenyans which even led to the assassinations the country witnessed
soon after the lowering of the colonial flag. A gain Kenyans had no idea
as to what exactly was taking place in the country but there emerged a
powerful status quo supported by dangerous cartels taking over the reign
of a nation which was yet to harvest the fruits of being a free sovereign
state. What corruption immediately brought on the table of Kenyans was
extreme division based on ethnicity which further led to institutional
ethnic divide. The scenario which emerged was that anyone opposing
such a set up or questioning the impact of ethnicity had to be brutally dealt
with even it means killings. Kenyans had to be detained by the corrupt
managers of the status quo just to have peace. Some disappeared never to
be seen to date and Kenyans as always have been time and again reminded
to move on and forget about the past. After the Kenyans minds have been
poisoned by the deadly ethnic elements, the nation established a society
that can’t develop nor move ahead in terms of social, political and
economic development. It is now about identifying with one’s ethnic
block whether rich or poor because after all the nation has already sunk
quite low. With the extreme division in the society, very little is likely to
emerge out of the Kenyan society. The investment on corruption is quite
deep and huge in terms of money and resources hence it is a sector which
is likely to thrive in our nation for quite some decades. A corrupt mind
can never be positive in all aspects since negativity is the center stage of
such a life. Apart from being ethnic and divided, most Kenyans are
currently stacked in some form of mud. The majority in the country are
poor and with the highest level of unemployment, the country is already
in a very bad shape. The economy of the country collapsed soon after
independence and all due to corruption. Some regions in the country had
to be punished because they harbored divergent opinions which wasn’t in
favor of the status quo. When the Catholic leader Jorge Mario Bergoglio
now known as Pope Francis visited Kenya sometimes in 2016, he warned
Kenyans of the dangers of corruption and what the lethal sin is capable of
doing. In his address to Kenyans, the Catholic pope told Kenyans that
corruption can only be compared to sugar, a sweet substance which is so
tempting and would make one go for more. A corrupt person is so immune
to the menace and can hardly figure out its consequences. Such people are
dangerous for the nation as they destroy the society’s basic human
foundation as well as contributing to the collapse of the of various
institutions throughout the country. It is corruption which is to blame for
the mess in our education system which was once the pride of the entire
African continent. It all began when young Kenyans got to know that
some of their leaders even got into the various highest offices with fake
or questionable certificates and degrees. These are same leaders who are
raising families and at the same time meant to maintain the highest
standards of moral principles. It is them promoting such rot right inside
the families since their children may adopt similar footpath in order to
became successful. There are quite a number of Kenyans who have
worked with fake papers, retired and eventually earned their final perks,
all thanks to a corrupt Kenyan society which is already upside down. Such
people can hardly be investigated since they happened to be the
beneficiaries of an immoral society where the majority is looking for short
cuts to better their lives. The Kenyan children are amazed at how their
parents, sisters, uncles are faking it all the way to the highest offices in
the society. As such they too are forced to go extra miles to succeed in
whichever means. That could be the reason why the youngest generations
who may have achieved their success in some dubious means have ended
up in disarray. The majority can hardly graduate in the various institutions
of higher learning because they never earned their qualifications on merit.
It is quite tragic that quite a number of Kenyan leaders have been
apprehended after having secured well paid jobs with fake documents and
they have to bribe their way again to get out of the mess. That’s a society
completely rotten to the core and there may never be any savior no matter
the best laws, best institutions or sending the entire Kenyan Leadership to
best schools like Harvard. Life would still remain the same since
corruption is simply like sugar and what happens with such a cane product
is that one can only add more and more into their cups. By the end of the
it all, a corrupt parent is likely to bring up children whose minds are
already distorted by corrupt deeds. What makes corruption in Kenya quite
perplexing is that the perpetrators of the menace do pray and go to church.
They seemed to be the most loved and quite adored by the men and
women of cloth. They sit in front rows in various churches, temples and
mosques in different parts of the country and dine with high priests. They
can hardly be criticized because the church is with them both in good
times and bad times. When it comes to tithes, they always stand tall to be
counted and even praised before a congregation which is confused, poor
and at the same time swallowed by all kinds of woes in the society.
A director who worked with fake certificates is always prayed for in
churches since such dark past in their social lives is always kept under
the carpet. They have to be kept safe from the raging public who may want
to question the sources of their wealth and eventually how they made it so
fast in life within the shortest times possible. Thanks to the seeds of
corruption which now remains planted a cross the country and the cross
pollination taking place as a result of the menace which may not augur
well for the country in the long run. Corrupt practices are now in our
churches, schools, hospitals to the military and police. Leaders are now
struggling on how to cover their kin and close confidants caught up in the
crisis. They have to be bailed out after surviving in the society which had
once slept and woke up in a state of confusion. Corruption is derailing
Kenyans ways of thinking and even association with each other. It is what
has led to the crisis in Kenyan schools where young children are having
the notion that better education doesn’t count in life. What matters is
having the will and means of making it in life by hooks or crooks. The
struggle is simply how to acquire cleans ‘A’s or B’s and those kids who
are too pressured and cannot meet such a standard have no choice but to
commit suicide, burn schools and at the same time engage their seniors
like teachers or parents in some form of violent confrontations.
Because of corruption the Kenyan nation had long been turned into a
consumer society where basic items cannot be produced locally. Due to
the collapse of most industries throughout the country, Kenyans are now
forced to import most of the products from the East and parts of the west.
The lowest cadre in the Kenyan society are now forced to survive on
second hand products which are now in the form of clothes and chances
are that citizens may end up consuming adulterated oils, or foods. The
dangerous habits have sneaked into Kenya’s health institutions where the
best drugs are sold out to the local clinics while the rest of the citizens are
left to consume expired medicines. The unfortunate scenario with
corruption is that those involved care less about human lives.
They would rather be comfortable when quite a number are completely
erased because they have very little in common or such people add no
value in their lives. Those who are hard hit are the ordinary Kenyans
whose lives are being determined by a corrupt health sector. They have
no capacity to determine whether a drug or whichever medicine has
expired or not since most of them don’t have a choice. That’s the
beginning of establishing the now called banana republic where the sick
and the most vulnerable have to die prematurely due to preventable
disease. Kenya is being destroyed and the speed in which such deeds are
being committed has alarmed the concerned Kenyans. It is like the nation
is up for grabs in almost all sectors. The moment the menace got into the
country’s education system, health sector and on environmental issues, it
marked the end of one of the past prosperous East African nation in the
African continent. The International community believed that Kenya
could be one of the most corrupt country in the world going by the events
that are often witnessed in the entire corner of the nation. Meanwhile the
corrupt managers appear unmoved and are hardly bothered by noise
emanating from a section of the society. According to them, they have
accomplished what is enough for them and their kin plus the rest of their
generation. They count themselves in terms of billions of the tax payers
money being kept in offshore accounts right in the hearts of the developed
world. Kenya may never stand on its feet and become a fully functional
society because almost a million is being stolen from the public coffers in
every twelve hours. That has been the trend since the nation got relieved
from the yoke of the British empire. The rest of the world is equally
shocked by the level of theft of the public resources in Kenya, a dirty game
which is being championed by some of the most learned people in the
society. These categories of corrupt individuals went full blast for the
agricultural sector and destroyed the livelihoods of Kenyans in some
painful ways ever witnessed in any civilized society. Kenyans who once
depended on such a lucrative sector have been impoverished and
eventually forced to go back to peasantries where there is no direction as
people start to live from hand to mouth.
It began with the cotton sector which collapsed in the late seventies,
followed by the pyrethrum and now coffee. Some Kenyan farmers who
got fed up with the middle men in the coffee and pyrethrum industry had
no choice but to uproot the crops and diverted their energy into some other
farming activities. That was the beginning of massive unemployment in
the country which later gave birth to insecurity as well as the collapse of
law and order in different parts of the country. Those who have paid with
their lives are the younger generation who got absorbed in some form of
gang movement in order to earn a living. Quite a number have been
gunned down by a ruthless police force which believes in protecting lives
and property of the rest of Kenyans. They too are the majority in some
notorious Kenyan prisons. The corrupt cartels on the other hand can
easily buy their way out when cornered by the justice system. It is because
of corruption that Kenya would later become a terrorist destination
something which woke the nation way back in the nineties when the
United States Embassy together with adjacent buildings were brought
down by massive bombasts sponsored by perhaps home grown terrorists.
It shattered the dreams of a nation which all along had been struggling
with some woes believed to be politically and economically oriented. Just
how Kenya became attracted to terrorists shouldn’t be based on the fact
that the nation remains one of the western allies or a strategic partner. It
is because a section of Kenyans is hardly bothered by a nation which is
being ripped off by a few individuals whose only motive is to loot and
plunder from the public coffers. It is like Kenya had long been mortgaged
by those who were once entrusted by the running of the affairs in different
parts of the country. The feelings of being non patriotic among the
majority of Kenyans is a testimony that most citizens are hardly bothered
by how the country is being run. Terrorists have simply found Kenya to
be a soft spot because of the level of poverty and lack of opportunities
which could support lives. As a result, the country’s security forces
seemed to have been compromised in one way or the other because bombs
and guns which are often used to destroy the lives come from a cross the
border.
A peasant farmer in any part of the country can hardly afford any
explosive devises because most of them have simply been overwhelmed
by local factors like poverty, diseases plus other forms of calamities. A
divided nation can hardly fight terror because their aim is just to acquire
wealth, promote their own selfish agendas and also apply all sorts of
illegal means to maintain their status in the society. It is emerging that
most terrorists cannot operate in the country without the support of the
locals who are dissatisfied by the level of impunity currently rampant in
almost all sectors of the social, political and economy. There are also
rogue security forces who also don’t want to be left out when the nation
is being ripped off by the country’s top leadership. Corruption soon
became a cancer and one of the chronic diseases the nation has ever
witnessed in the 21st century. The notion sweeping across the nation is
that almost everyone has to be corrupt to make it life right from marriage,
job allocations, acquisition of knowledge in the Institutions of higher
learning and even settlements. Meanwhile complete silence has to prevail
on some of those matters and Kenyans as usual have to pretend like such
menace don’t exist in their midst.
When young kids in primary schools can be found engaging in exam
malpractices just to make it in life, it means that it is simply a concept
borrowed from their parents. A parent who illegally acquired any form of
illegal documents, worked with it and eventually becoming successful
shouldn’t be shocked when the toxic baton is handed over to their siblings
since that’s the way to be successful in the new world in Kenya. It is like
mom/dad did it hence that shouldn’t be such a big deal. That’s a complete
rot in a society that claims to be ninety percent Christians, Islamic, Jewish
or Hindus plus other affiliated religious sects.
Once corruption enters into the education sector of any nation, that signals
the end of its sovereign status and the death of an empire. Corrupt minds
can never be engineers, doctors, teachers as well as entrepreneurs etc. That
could be the reason why industries a cross Kenya are collapsing, right
from coffee to sugar cane plus other forms of manufacturing industries.
Kenya is doomed due to corruption yet the best citizens could be told is
how to go ethnic when confronted by extreme challenges and also when
it comes to employing the best brains.
It is quite tragic that some Kenyans can simply be convinced to invade
their forest lands and create such an environmental degradation yet they
can hardly feel the impact. Of course, corruption blocks sound reasoning
and the eyes even get blurred by its sweetness because the journey is not
about saving the planet but to acquire what comes on the way by all
means. It is about acquiring wealth even it means destroying the
livelihoods of thousands or millions of the local population. In Kenya it
is no longer about quality but quantity of what people eat, wear and plant
because the minds of an average Kenyan had long been captured by an
extremely toxic environment. From the time the majority of Kenyans
began to associate themselves with all manner of corrupt ideals and
ideologies, the country hasn’t been the same and right from the time of
independence. For those Kenyans who eulogize and have finally
embraced such lethal practices they finally believed to have made a big
difference in their lives. They are a generation who are not going back
having been baptized with the toxic waters of corruption and none care
the less since it is a delicacy which has been laid on the table for everyone.
Corruption is one such menu which is driving the society to the wire and
for those Kenyans who have refused o board the bus, they have literary
find the East African Nation quite hostile to fit in.
Such a people are often branded as traitors and chances of one getting
punished through death is most likely. once a Kenyan is initiated into the
act, they are expected not to see any evil in what is already defining the
cultural identity and the well-being of the society. From the time the evil
act in the name of corruption got into the Kenyan blood, it immediately
turned out to be the largest employment sector where millions of the local
citizens are permanently immersed. Those employed in the sector have to
ensure that everything runs smooth as per their dreams and aspirations.
Being an industry which is associated with all manner of crazy ideas and
deadly acts, everything is done under the sun just to ensure that nothing
goes wrong.
It is an industry of murder, deceit and at the same time lazed with unlawful
human activities which often turn lethal in most cases. Members of the
comrade club are comrades where everyone is expected to sacrifice for
one another and under such circumstances, extremes are bound to happen.
For corruption to prosper undisturbed, members associated with the sector
have to ensure that any emerging opposing forces are dealt with to the
core where even physical eliminations are not ruled out. That’s why
Kenyans are brutal, angry and almost loosing direction whenever
cornered by the normal daily circumstances. What makes corruption in
Kenya quite unique is that those who have fully embraced the menace
now referred to as another deadly cancer, are well learned. They are not
illiterate lot in the society whom all along had been kept hostage by
poverty, diseases and ignorance but a well-organized Kenyan clique who
are out to ensure that their agenda is well accomplished by hooks or
crooks. Whenever they are interfered with, those associated with corrupt
ideals are always ready to go extra miles to ensure that the lethal empire
is safely guarded.
Attempts to frustrate those who have fully embraced corruption as a
means of earning a living have always proved futile since their revenge is
often fast and quite lethal. Courageous Kenyans who have dared
questioned their modus operandi even through legal means have so far
paid with their lives with the majority being dumped dead into fast moving
waters such as River Yala while others disappearing without a trace. Since
corruption is proving to be one of Kenya’s weakness as a nation, the East
African citizens have often been reminded by the top cream of the country
to just embrace whatever comes out of the largest evil empire ever
emerged in the country. Corruption network in Kenya has its own
registered members with their roots spread in all the sectors of the social,
political and economy and with the chilling message that the East African
Nation is up for grabs. They are not on the ground to improve the lives of
the ordinary Kenyan citizens but to ensure that they are completely
suffocated with very little or no space to breath. Those who believe and
dine in corruption in Kenya believe that they have to keep on smiling all
the way because their plates are always full of aroma and rare delicacies.
At times when overwhelmed by emotional disorder as a result of too much
accumulation, several preachers have always come to their rescue at the
dire hour of need. They are heartily prayed for even as spiritual water too,
gets sprinkled on their faces and entire body just to ensure that another
brighter day tomorrow brings hope and more gold. A number of religious
leaders when asked why they have to dine with the most corrupt in
Kenyans have often hit back biblically at their critics the general Kenyan
population. According to their religious message, these are Kenyans who
have just veered off the main progressive paths and with intensive prayers
and soul searching, they can easily cry over someone’s shoulder for
permanent forgiveness. Furthermore, Christ never came for the Kings and
the royals of this world but for looters of the public coffers, drunkards
plus those perceived to have committed the worst sins ever. But that’s
quite different from the victims of corruption in Kenya spread across the
country whose only remaining bullet is to curse the unknown for
distorting their life chain right from rampant unemployment, lack of
medicines in poorly furnished dispensaries and as well as battling jigger’s
invasion. They too need to pray for some miracles to come their way and
there seems to be no guarantee whenever they pour their hearts out to the
maker according to the gospel spearheaded by the corrupt machineries.
CORRUPTION AS A DEVOLVED SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND
ECONOMIC STRICTURE.
The protagonists who introduced corruption as one of the most preferred
menu or delicacy in the country are full bent to ensure that almost every
Kenyan national have it as a bite. It has been such a painful ordeal for the
majority of Kenyans who had long refused to get absorbed into the corrupt
network. The unlucky lot in the Kenyan society may never see the light
of the day for the rest of their lives.
The brutal war against the watering mouth delicacy has never taken off
due to the fact that those who introduced such a salad in the lives of
Kenyans have always been ready to safe guard their interests by all the
brutal means available at their fingertips. They are a group of smart
infiltrators who can sniff life out of any Kenyan who may attempt to
question their moves or several of their activities. To ensure that the
majority of citizens are completely cornered and terrified to the core, the
owners of corrupt machineries have made sure that their scary ideologies
are embraced and spread to both comrades or foes. The corrupt bus can
head to any direction as long as some goodies are likely to come their way
no matter the casualties. The victims of the corrupt network have never
stopped celebrating particularly whenever any blood has been spill and
life brutally lost. These are innocent Kenyans who have found themselves
being strangled then dumped in bushes, rivers or deep swamps. Those
tasked with accomplishing the evil tasks are ordinary Kenyans whom
from the face value are innocent, attend to their various churches or
mosques but are forced to turn into monsters whenever required to render
their services. Corrupt ways of life in Kenya has been turned into an
obsession where one has to be pictured fully immersed into the blood.
That’s why the practice simply got devolved into the counties right from
the time the devolution governing structure was embraced by the Kenyan
society.
It is one monster of its kind which if not looked into could destroy the
hard fought democracy which the majority of Kenyans had hoped would
transform their lives. Most county governments in Kenya have found
themselves marooned and completely under siege as the corrupt local
governing structure takes charge. These are a group of monsters who are
not ready to let it go as they are always ready to destroy quite several lives
in an attempt to safeguard their interests. They are the ones who currently
give direction on whom to appoint where and how meaning that the
network is a powerful governing system in itself. That’s why any breach
of their self-laid down regulations is brutally dealt in the form of death or
permanent disappearance.
The local citizens hailing from the many counties in Kenya are equally
terrified as well helpless to an extend that confronting the monster has
never been easy. They simply don’t have any capacity to question such a
status quo where their lives are value less and at the same time self-
regarded depending on which side of the bed one is lying on. Kenyans
are getting used to a situation where the powerful network can get away
with anything a scenario which has forced a section of citizens to take the
laws of the land into their hands in retaliation.
To be associated with the corrupt network is a gate way for survival
because one can be guaranteed certain favors right from jobs to illicit
tenders where billions of the tax money can easily be kept hidden outside
the public domain. These are a people who knows when to be innocent
and when to be declared guilty of any wrong doings. Two years even
before they commit any form of violent activities like murder as well as
economic crimes, they can easily confront the courts for any anticipatory
bail. To them time is such a crucial factor since they are also dealing with
a restless public whose anger and hopeless can also be dealt with either
through handouts or just malicious fears. The corrupt bandwagons are
well versed with the moods of the Kenyan public meaning that they can
dictate their terms and conditions.
An ordinary Kenyan remains terrified whenever the corrupt cartels come
calling since these are a people who don’t value life. They have currently
taken charge of the entire governing structure operating in nearly all the
counties where the rule of law had long been erased. To stamp their
authorities, those already tainted with the corrupt blood seemed to have
become daring to an extent that even the governor of a county has to
adhere to their norms. That’s why innocent Kenyans have found
themselves cornered with the end results being found dumped either
helpless, headless or dead in whichever fashionable or unfashionable
manner. The reality on the ground is that counties or devolved governing
structures have a safe haven for the corrupt generation to operate with
ease. They even dictate how jobs are distributed and again based on clans,
the number of concubines and other closest associates.
Getting jobs in counties is almost like a death trap since there are certain
norms and regulations mostly dictated by the powerful terror family
networks which must be seen visible on their foreheads at all times. The
governor of any county is mostly forced to tore the line or if not so
embrace the corrupt comrade network since they are ruthless, daring and
always ready to part with several lives. Their bold modus operandi means
that they know how to make judicial system be on their favor, also when
to reject any legal rulings not suitable to them and also how to suffocate
the complete law of the land. Families are disowning their own and the
unruly young ones have even turned against their parents since everyone
wants shortcuts which they believe can easily be earned in a brutal way
without even blinking an eye. The younger generation seems to have been
told that the only way out for one to accomplish big dreams is not just
hard work but faking everything till the dreams come true and indeed they
are out with all their wings wide open. That’s why for the first time in the
history of Kenya the young primary school children have to engage in
exam malpractices just to gain the much needed success because that’s
what they have seen emerging from the society where they were born.
The after math of corruption in Kenya and its impact means that a section
of the local population is bound to suffer for the rest of their lives. It is
such a network which thrives on disorder, deceit and at times deep secrecy
given the billions of the tax payers that continue to exchange hands on
daily basis. The best brains whether legal, social, political and even
economics seems to have no chance of thriving side by side the much
tainted blood cartel. That’s why immediately after Kenya was declared a
sovereign state, a red line was immediately drawn between the corrupt
and those perceived to be in bed with justice and the rule of law. The
country would later find itself in the middle of bloodbath where Kenyans
claiming to be on the right side of the bed have always traded barbs with
their corrupt counterparts.
Each side has a claim which according to them is a right which they
believe can pull Kenyan out of the thickets but that has been happening
with such a huge prize to pay. It is in that passionate blood bath where
since independence Kenya has lost the best brains because a section of the
population is just not ready let the country breath. It has been a painful
torturous ordeal for the right minded Kenyans who have been forced to
run away for their dear lives as the most corrupt generation of the East
African society takes charge.
This is a generation which is quite brutal and extremely daring with an
operation which is carried out both in broad day light and under the cover
the darkness. It is now a common scenario where immediately the sunrise
hit the Kenyan landscape and shortly before or after sunset, some billions
of money is supposed to have been snatched from the jaws of the public;
also anyone daring to question their modus operandi is supposed to be
administered with one final doze never to see the light of the day for the
rest of the remaining lives on earth. That’s why the majority of Kenyans
are often terrified by the mentioning of the word corruption because it is
a term which reminds them of a close associate lost in the line of duty or
a parcel of land forcefully grabbed from the helpless occupants or one
simply disappears from the public domain never to be seen under the sun.
Those committing such atrocities are just ordinary Kenyans with brainy
ideas but somewhere down the line, their lives got influenced by extreme
appetite for both blood, wealth and fame. Their terms and conditions for
survival have scared many to death to an extend that the majority of
Kenyans seemed to have surrendered to their fate. It is now a free for all
grabbing spree where only the lucky ones’ can be blessed to carry the day.
In other social and religious gatherings, the corrupt Kenyans have to
display such a rare kind of humility where even the hidden gestures are
supposed to come out a live but deep inside their hearts sleeps the most
lethal monster. Any Kenyan caught up in the midst of the mess and even
paraded before the public in the name of facing the law of the land is often
described as a coward who never acted smart and at that time can even
taste the wrath of the public.
The language now quite synonymous with the general population is that
anyone caught with a million Kenyan shillings or less is deemed to have
miserably failed flat in their line of duty since their counter parts who just
snatched a billion from the public coffers are even threatening anyone to
dare confront them in the name of the upholding the rule of law or
anything called human rights abuses are almost like electric and cannot
be touched. The language evolving around corruption in Kenya is just
quite disheartening since the monster is no longer a calamity or a tragedy
but a way of life. As such whenever the beast comes roaring, the language
has always been twisted by comrades in blood to make it appear like
almost every Kenyan has had a bite of the cake despite the sugary taste. It
is very easy for the members from the corrupt to gang up whenever
cornered and together with the best legal minds in their midst, they often
meander safely to the dry land. The war against corruption had long
stalled since vulnerable Kenyans have now been forced to squire it among
themselves along ethnic lines. Handlers of corrupt network are aware that
for them to always win the game, they have to involve the helpless Kenyan
population who seemed to have been hit hard by the deadly cancer.
These are the ordinary citizens whose lives have been twisted by the
corrupt deals prevalent throughout the country but to a larger extent they
too cannot just sit back and watch as one of their own is being lynched in
the court of public opinion as a result of the menace. Corruption is a
government in itself going by the manner in which it has penetrated in
almost every soul of the existing Kenyan population. That’s why those
mandated to ensure that corruption network prevails and none of their
members touched in anyway, have always had a permanent smile day in
and day out. Their narrow escape route remains one of the safest ever, a
path which the ordinary Kenyans can dare trespass. It is the reason why
the numerous attempts to ensure that corruption becomes deeply
connected with the majority of Kenyans DNA has always succeeded
much to the chagrin of a section of the population. The menace is like a
lethal sword which is always ready to chop off any protruding head that
might attempt to block its bloody tainted path.
The fact that deep inside the minds of every Kenyan there is already
existence of the dragon is a clear demonstration of extreme fear before the
nation. Any protruding heads in the country claiming to be the champions
of change have literary been forced to eat an ample pie after witnessing
the brutal circumstances which have sealed the fate of their peers.
Merchants of the menace had long come to the realization that the best
way to permanently deal with any disquiet voice challenging their status
quo is kidnapping, murder and permanent disappearance where one shall
never be traced nor recovered for the rest of their lives. The rivers, bushes,
open pit latrines and even water boreholes had long been identified as the
best places where such vulnerable victims are always dumped either dead
or alive. For the many journeys or milestones Kenya has made as a nation,
that has been the trend with the corrupt network family union always
carrying the day with or without the existence of justice in the court of
law. These merchants had long grouped themselves as self-declared lethal
group whose motives are to ensure that the country Kenya doesn’t meet
all her obligations in terms of order, upholding the rule of law and at the
same dismembering any unit which are meant to glue Kenyans as one
family of nations. That’s why an innocent Kenyan child instead of
tirelessly burning the midnight oil for the benefit of a brighter future is
already investing their energy in quest of shortcuts to remain relevant in
an already polluted or polarized world. According to these vulnerable
youngsters, success must just come their way. Unfortunately, that’s the
art which had long been perfected from the top hierarchy of the Kenyan
family to leadership downwards something which has literary boosted a
disconnect between the Kenyan citizen and their values. Kenyans now
have quite some unpredictable strange habits which even despite
acquiring the best education so far under the sun, may never be erased in
their minds and souls. That’s why poverty, ignorance and disease has
found a fertile ground to spread indiscriminately and unsparing since the
soil had long been tilt and made ready for the three menace to grow.
It is at this juncture that the best brains in Kenya are also crying foul over
the menace which they now categorized as the incoming anaconda with
the ability to swallow almost everyone in the country. With the nation and
Kenyans under siege and almost at a loss of the next safe exit in attempt
to escape the onslaught from the dragon, there has been numerous cries
for revolution, to carry out with life on self-defense mode, cessation and
open lethargy all emanating from a section of population in the country
across board. Another section of the population appears to have given up
and could hardly see anything wrong with the country since according to
them the nation has been up for grabs from the ancient times. These are
the adamant Kenyans who are indirectly in love and bedding with the
members of the cartel. They are the ones who believe that whoever is
caught looting the public coffers is supposed to have made away with
something huge and such apprehension is just luck gone bad. They can
also be condemned by their peers the general public for having gone for
small things which even when apprehended they may not manage to buy
their way out.
The last conversation one would hear from these Kenyans is that since
Kenya is almost up for grabs with very little mercy for the sovereign state,
every piece of the nation must just be placed on a table for a large bite.
That’s why whenever the word corruption is widely talked about,
Kenyans have always approached it differently with both cries and joy in
equal measure. The corrupt are condemned or cursed overwhelmingly but
they are also members of the Kenyan family and a people who ought to
be given chance to defend themselves for the rest of their lives. The curse
is a heavy yoke which has proved to be quite overwhelming among
Kenyans of goodwill but at the same time remained to be a golden stone
which must just be embraced and kept underneath for the next generation.
The interesting bit is that Kenyans can unanimously shed tears over
corruption going by the manner in which the ruthless dragon has shattered
the dreams of many in the country but everyone would immediately rush
to their hideouts only to emerge with different heads altogether. That’s
after Kenyans have sobered up and come to the point that they were just
about to lynch one of their own for no apparent reason at all.
There is a lot of emotional attachment to whoever is believed to have
bitten the goodies of corruption a scenario which involves the ordinary
citizens whose mindset had long been twisted by the menace. These are
the people who are not ready to have another line of thought on the
menace despite the negative impact of the dragon in their lives. The best
legal minds in the country have been forced to come forward in defense
of corruption and its elements because that’s the next big deal in a country
described as the next Africa’s power house. Another concerned legal
minds who seemed to be battling the cancer from within are at times
forced to give way since because of the deadly numerous challenges they
see before them and their families. That’s why several sectors of the
country’s economy have been sinking at an alarming rate especially now
that corruption has become a devolved governing system lazed with dire
consequences. There has been such a struggle for the Kenyan nation in an
attempt to skip and jump but the hurdles have remained quite a challenge
because of the numerous road blocks manned by the corrupt indigenous
citizens. These are the people who from the sixties contributed to the
collapse of several manufacturing industries in the country to agricultural
produce to an extend that a whole healthy nation is forced to import basic
items like sugar and maize. This is something done without shame and
courtesy since the local population have found themselves held hostage
by the self-engineered or man-made ignorance and fear. These Kenyans
have been told that by consuming items like sugar, coffee and maize from
across the borders could be just due to several unavoidable circumstances.
The agitated or concerned Kenyans have often been reminded that the
current world is more less a global village hence there is likely to be influx
of goods from different parts of the world into the country. That’s why
the poorest Kenyans today are farmers whose produce had long been
interfered with by local gangs whose interests are extremely selfish,
dangerous and out of touch with the reality on the ground. As such
Kenyans are now suffering but their eyes are still blurred and at the same
time darkened by the sweet flavors which again comes to them in plenty
from the proprietors of the deadly curse.

CORRUPTION IN KENYA-the impoact of a curse -FULLY EDITED VERSION.docx

  • 1. CORRUPTION IN KENYA, THE LONG-LASTING IMPACT OF A CURSE BY DUNCAN ISAIAH ODUOR O. ABWAO MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS LECTURER St. Paul’s University PART ONE Corruption in Kenya began as a simple sweet pie and what has just emerged is that the majority of citizens at the time appeared ignorant to comprehend its impact and everlasting permanent future consequences. The investment since Independence has been that Kenyans ought to get rich and acquire quite some millions in whichever means and whichever capacity depending on one’s ability within the shortest time period possible. The ignorant population despite acquiring some basic knowledge in schools had no idea why those entrusted with leadership were so much into grabbing whatever they may lay their hands upon. The message which got into the people’s mind back then was that land had to be grabbed even it means death or displacement of thousands of Kenyans. The minds of the local population soon got polluted and Kenya immediately gave birth to one of the societies which would later be termed as the most corrupt in the entire globe. It is a gone society and the country called Kenya is just surviving on the edge. Those who were tasked to rule Kenya at the dawn of independence had to part ways simply because of harboring different opinions on how to tackle the monster called corruption. The bitter fell off soon led to the destruction of the careers of some Kenyans which even led to the assassinations the country witnessed soon after the lowering of the colonial flag. A gain Kenyans had no idea as to what exactly was taking place in the country but there emerged a powerful status quo supported by dangerous cartels taking over the reign of a nation which was yet to harvest the fruits of being a free sovereign state. What corruption immediately brought on the table of Kenyans was extreme division based on ethnicity which further led to institutional ethnic divide. The scenario which emerged was that anyone opposing
  • 2. such a set up or questioning the impact of ethnicity had to be brutally dealt with even it means killings. Kenyans had to be detained by the corrupt managers of the status quo just to have peace. Some disappeared never to be seen to date and Kenyans as always have been time and again reminded to move on and forget about the past. After the Kenyans minds have been poisoned by the deadly ethnic elements, the nation established a society that can’t develop nor move ahead in terms of social, political and economic development. It is now about identifying with one’s ethnic block whether rich or poor because after all the nation has already sunk quite low. With the extreme division in the society, very little is likely to emerge out of the Kenyan society. The investment on corruption is quite deep and huge in terms of money and resources hence it is a sector which is likely to thrive in our nation for quite some decades. A corrupt mind can never be positive in all aspects since negativity is the center stage of such a life. Apart from being ethnic and divided, most Kenyans are currently stacked in some form of mud. The majority in the country are poor and with the highest level of unemployment, the country is already in a very bad shape. The economy of the country collapsed soon after independence and all due to corruption. Some regions in the country had to be punished because they harbored divergent opinions which wasn’t in favor of the status quo. When the Catholic leader Jorge Mario Bergoglio now known as Pope Francis visited Kenya sometimes in 2016, he warned Kenyans of the dangers of corruption and what the lethal sin is capable of doing. In his address to Kenyans, the Catholic pope told Kenyans that corruption can only be compared to sugar, a sweet substance which is so tempting and would make one go for more. A corrupt person is so immune to the menace and can hardly figure out its consequences. Such people are dangerous for the nation as they destroy the society’s basic human foundation as well as contributing to the collapse of the of various institutions throughout the country. It is corruption which is to blame for the mess in our education system which was once the pride of the entire African continent. It all began when young Kenyans got to know that
  • 3. some of their leaders even got into the various highest offices with fake or questionable certificates and degrees. These are same leaders who are raising families and at the same time meant to maintain the highest standards of moral principles. It is them promoting such rot right inside the families since their children may adopt similar footpath in order to became successful. There are quite a number of Kenyans who have worked with fake papers, retired and eventually earned their final perks, all thanks to a corrupt Kenyan society which is already upside down. Such people can hardly be investigated since they happened to be the beneficiaries of an immoral society where the majority is looking for short cuts to better their lives. The Kenyan children are amazed at how their parents, sisters, uncles are faking it all the way to the highest offices in the society. As such they too are forced to go extra miles to succeed in whichever means. That could be the reason why the youngest generations who may have achieved their success in some dubious means have ended up in disarray. The majority can hardly graduate in the various institutions of higher learning because they never earned their qualifications on merit. It is quite tragic that quite a number of Kenyan leaders have been apprehended after having secured well paid jobs with fake documents and they have to bribe their way again to get out of the mess. That’s a society completely rotten to the core and there may never be any savior no matter the best laws, best institutions or sending the entire Kenyan Leadership to best schools like Harvard. Life would still remain the same since corruption is simply like sugar and what happens with such a cane product is that one can only add more and more into their cups. By the end of the it all, a corrupt parent is likely to bring up children whose minds are already distorted by corrupt deeds. What makes corruption in Kenya quite perplexing is that the perpetrators of the menace do pray and go to church. They seemed to be the most loved and quite adored by the men and women of cloth. They sit in front rows in various churches, temples and mosques in different parts of the country and dine with high priests. They can hardly be criticized because the church is with them both in good
  • 4. times and bad times. When it comes to tithes, they always stand tall to be counted and even praised before a congregation which is confused, poor and at the same time swallowed by all kinds of woes in the society. A director who worked with fake certificates is always prayed for in churches since such dark past in their social lives is always kept under the carpet. They have to be kept safe from the raging public who may want to question the sources of their wealth and eventually how they made it so fast in life within the shortest times possible. Thanks to the seeds of corruption which now remains planted a cross the country and the cross pollination taking place as a result of the menace which may not augur well for the country in the long run. Corrupt practices are now in our churches, schools, hospitals to the military and police. Leaders are now struggling on how to cover their kin and close confidants caught up in the crisis. They have to be bailed out after surviving in the society which had once slept and woke up in a state of confusion. Corruption is derailing Kenyans ways of thinking and even association with each other. It is what has led to the crisis in Kenyan schools where young children are having the notion that better education doesn’t count in life. What matters is having the will and means of making it in life by hooks or crooks. The struggle is simply how to acquire cleans ‘A’s or B’s and those kids who are too pressured and cannot meet such a standard have no choice but to commit suicide, burn schools and at the same time engage their seniors like teachers or parents in some form of violent confrontations. Because of corruption the Kenyan nation had long been turned into a consumer society where basic items cannot be produced locally. Due to the collapse of most industries throughout the country, Kenyans are now forced to import most of the products from the East and parts of the west. The lowest cadre in the Kenyan society are now forced to survive on second hand products which are now in the form of clothes and chances are that citizens may end up consuming adulterated oils, or foods. The dangerous habits have sneaked into Kenya’s health institutions where the
  • 5. best drugs are sold out to the local clinics while the rest of the citizens are left to consume expired medicines. The unfortunate scenario with corruption is that those involved care less about human lives. They would rather be comfortable when quite a number are completely erased because they have very little in common or such people add no value in their lives. Those who are hard hit are the ordinary Kenyans whose lives are being determined by a corrupt health sector. They have no capacity to determine whether a drug or whichever medicine has expired or not since most of them don’t have a choice. That’s the beginning of establishing the now called banana republic where the sick and the most vulnerable have to die prematurely due to preventable disease. Kenya is being destroyed and the speed in which such deeds are being committed has alarmed the concerned Kenyans. It is like the nation is up for grabs in almost all sectors. The moment the menace got into the country’s education system, health sector and on environmental issues, it marked the end of one of the past prosperous East African nation in the African continent. The International community believed that Kenya could be one of the most corrupt country in the world going by the events that are often witnessed in the entire corner of the nation. Meanwhile the corrupt managers appear unmoved and are hardly bothered by noise emanating from a section of the society. According to them, they have accomplished what is enough for them and their kin plus the rest of their generation. They count themselves in terms of billions of the tax payers money being kept in offshore accounts right in the hearts of the developed world. Kenya may never stand on its feet and become a fully functional society because almost a million is being stolen from the public coffers in every twelve hours. That has been the trend since the nation got relieved from the yoke of the British empire. The rest of the world is equally shocked by the level of theft of the public resources in Kenya, a dirty game which is being championed by some of the most learned people in the society. These categories of corrupt individuals went full blast for the agricultural sector and destroyed the livelihoods of Kenyans in some
  • 6. painful ways ever witnessed in any civilized society. Kenyans who once depended on such a lucrative sector have been impoverished and eventually forced to go back to peasantries where there is no direction as people start to live from hand to mouth. It began with the cotton sector which collapsed in the late seventies, followed by the pyrethrum and now coffee. Some Kenyan farmers who got fed up with the middle men in the coffee and pyrethrum industry had no choice but to uproot the crops and diverted their energy into some other farming activities. That was the beginning of massive unemployment in the country which later gave birth to insecurity as well as the collapse of law and order in different parts of the country. Those who have paid with their lives are the younger generation who got absorbed in some form of gang movement in order to earn a living. Quite a number have been gunned down by a ruthless police force which believes in protecting lives and property of the rest of Kenyans. They too are the majority in some notorious Kenyan prisons. The corrupt cartels on the other hand can easily buy their way out when cornered by the justice system. It is because of corruption that Kenya would later become a terrorist destination something which woke the nation way back in the nineties when the United States Embassy together with adjacent buildings were brought down by massive bombasts sponsored by perhaps home grown terrorists. It shattered the dreams of a nation which all along had been struggling with some woes believed to be politically and economically oriented. Just how Kenya became attracted to terrorists shouldn’t be based on the fact that the nation remains one of the western allies or a strategic partner. It is because a section of Kenyans is hardly bothered by a nation which is being ripped off by a few individuals whose only motive is to loot and plunder from the public coffers. It is like Kenya had long been mortgaged by those who were once entrusted by the running of the affairs in different parts of the country. The feelings of being non patriotic among the majority of Kenyans is a testimony that most citizens are hardly bothered by how the country is being run. Terrorists have simply found Kenya to
  • 7. be a soft spot because of the level of poverty and lack of opportunities which could support lives. As a result, the country’s security forces seemed to have been compromised in one way or the other because bombs and guns which are often used to destroy the lives come from a cross the border. A peasant farmer in any part of the country can hardly afford any explosive devises because most of them have simply been overwhelmed by local factors like poverty, diseases plus other forms of calamities. A divided nation can hardly fight terror because their aim is just to acquire wealth, promote their own selfish agendas and also apply all sorts of illegal means to maintain their status in the society. It is emerging that most terrorists cannot operate in the country without the support of the locals who are dissatisfied by the level of impunity currently rampant in almost all sectors of the social, political and economy. There are also rogue security forces who also don’t want to be left out when the nation is being ripped off by the country’s top leadership. Corruption soon became a cancer and one of the chronic diseases the nation has ever witnessed in the 21st century. The notion sweeping across the nation is that almost everyone has to be corrupt to make it life right from marriage, job allocations, acquisition of knowledge in the Institutions of higher learning and even settlements. Meanwhile complete silence has to prevail on some of those matters and Kenyans as usual have to pretend like such menace don’t exist in their midst. When young kids in primary schools can be found engaging in exam malpractices just to make it in life, it means that it is simply a concept borrowed from their parents. A parent who illegally acquired any form of illegal documents, worked with it and eventually becoming successful shouldn’t be shocked when the toxic baton is handed over to their siblings since that’s the way to be successful in the new world in Kenya. It is like mom/dad did it hence that shouldn’t be such a big deal. That’s a complete
  • 8. rot in a society that claims to be ninety percent Christians, Islamic, Jewish or Hindus plus other affiliated religious sects. Once corruption enters into the education sector of any nation, that signals the end of its sovereign status and the death of an empire. Corrupt minds can never be engineers, doctors, teachers as well as entrepreneurs etc. That could be the reason why industries a cross Kenya are collapsing, right from coffee to sugar cane plus other forms of manufacturing industries. Kenya is doomed due to corruption yet the best citizens could be told is how to go ethnic when confronted by extreme challenges and also when it comes to employing the best brains. It is quite tragic that some Kenyans can simply be convinced to invade their forest lands and create such an environmental degradation yet they can hardly feel the impact. Of course, corruption blocks sound reasoning and the eyes even get blurred by its sweetness because the journey is not about saving the planet but to acquire what comes on the way by all means. It is about acquiring wealth even it means destroying the livelihoods of thousands or millions of the local population. In Kenya it is no longer about quality but quantity of what people eat, wear and plant because the minds of an average Kenyan had long been captured by an extremely toxic environment. From the time the majority of Kenyans began to associate themselves with all manner of corrupt ideals and ideologies, the country hasn’t been the same and right from the time of independence. For those Kenyans who eulogize and have finally embraced such lethal practices they finally believed to have made a big difference in their lives. They are a generation who are not going back having been baptized with the toxic waters of corruption and none care the less since it is a delicacy which has been laid on the table for everyone. Corruption is one such menu which is driving the society to the wire and for those Kenyans who have refused o board the bus, they have literary find the East African Nation quite hostile to fit in.
  • 9. Such a people are often branded as traitors and chances of one getting punished through death is most likely. once a Kenyan is initiated into the act, they are expected not to see any evil in what is already defining the cultural identity and the well-being of the society. From the time the evil act in the name of corruption got into the Kenyan blood, it immediately turned out to be the largest employment sector where millions of the local citizens are permanently immersed. Those employed in the sector have to ensure that everything runs smooth as per their dreams and aspirations. Being an industry which is associated with all manner of crazy ideas and deadly acts, everything is done under the sun just to ensure that nothing goes wrong. It is an industry of murder, deceit and at the same time lazed with unlawful human activities which often turn lethal in most cases. Members of the comrade club are comrades where everyone is expected to sacrifice for one another and under such circumstances, extremes are bound to happen. For corruption to prosper undisturbed, members associated with the sector have to ensure that any emerging opposing forces are dealt with to the core where even physical eliminations are not ruled out. That’s why Kenyans are brutal, angry and almost loosing direction whenever cornered by the normal daily circumstances. What makes corruption in Kenya quite unique is that those who have fully embraced the menace now referred to as another deadly cancer, are well learned. They are not illiterate lot in the society whom all along had been kept hostage by poverty, diseases and ignorance but a well-organized Kenyan clique who are out to ensure that their agenda is well accomplished by hooks or crooks. Whenever they are interfered with, those associated with corrupt ideals are always ready to go extra miles to ensure that the lethal empire is safely guarded. Attempts to frustrate those who have fully embraced corruption as a means of earning a living have always proved futile since their revenge is often fast and quite lethal. Courageous Kenyans who have dared
  • 10. questioned their modus operandi even through legal means have so far paid with their lives with the majority being dumped dead into fast moving waters such as River Yala while others disappearing without a trace. Since corruption is proving to be one of Kenya’s weakness as a nation, the East African citizens have often been reminded by the top cream of the country to just embrace whatever comes out of the largest evil empire ever emerged in the country. Corruption network in Kenya has its own registered members with their roots spread in all the sectors of the social, political and economy and with the chilling message that the East African Nation is up for grabs. They are not on the ground to improve the lives of the ordinary Kenyan citizens but to ensure that they are completely suffocated with very little or no space to breath. Those who believe and dine in corruption in Kenya believe that they have to keep on smiling all the way because their plates are always full of aroma and rare delicacies. At times when overwhelmed by emotional disorder as a result of too much accumulation, several preachers have always come to their rescue at the dire hour of need. They are heartily prayed for even as spiritual water too, gets sprinkled on their faces and entire body just to ensure that another brighter day tomorrow brings hope and more gold. A number of religious leaders when asked why they have to dine with the most corrupt in Kenyans have often hit back biblically at their critics the general Kenyan population. According to their religious message, these are Kenyans who have just veered off the main progressive paths and with intensive prayers and soul searching, they can easily cry over someone’s shoulder for permanent forgiveness. Furthermore, Christ never came for the Kings and the royals of this world but for looters of the public coffers, drunkards plus those perceived to have committed the worst sins ever. But that’s quite different from the victims of corruption in Kenya spread across the country whose only remaining bullet is to curse the unknown for distorting their life chain right from rampant unemployment, lack of medicines in poorly furnished dispensaries and as well as battling jigger’s invasion. They too need to pray for some miracles to come their way and
  • 11. there seems to be no guarantee whenever they pour their hearts out to the maker according to the gospel spearheaded by the corrupt machineries. CORRUPTION AS A DEVOLVED SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC STRICTURE. The protagonists who introduced corruption as one of the most preferred menu or delicacy in the country are full bent to ensure that almost every Kenyan national have it as a bite. It has been such a painful ordeal for the majority of Kenyans who had long refused to get absorbed into the corrupt network. The unlucky lot in the Kenyan society may never see the light of the day for the rest of their lives. The brutal war against the watering mouth delicacy has never taken off due to the fact that those who introduced such a salad in the lives of Kenyans have always been ready to safe guard their interests by all the brutal means available at their fingertips. They are a group of smart infiltrators who can sniff life out of any Kenyan who may attempt to question their moves or several of their activities. To ensure that the majority of citizens are completely cornered and terrified to the core, the owners of corrupt machineries have made sure that their scary ideologies are embraced and spread to both comrades or foes. The corrupt bus can head to any direction as long as some goodies are likely to come their way no matter the casualties. The victims of the corrupt network have never stopped celebrating particularly whenever any blood has been spill and life brutally lost. These are innocent Kenyans who have found themselves being strangled then dumped in bushes, rivers or deep swamps. Those tasked with accomplishing the evil tasks are ordinary Kenyans whom from the face value are innocent, attend to their various churches or mosques but are forced to turn into monsters whenever required to render their services. Corrupt ways of life in Kenya has been turned into an
  • 12. obsession where one has to be pictured fully immersed into the blood. That’s why the practice simply got devolved into the counties right from the time the devolution governing structure was embraced by the Kenyan society. It is one monster of its kind which if not looked into could destroy the hard fought democracy which the majority of Kenyans had hoped would transform their lives. Most county governments in Kenya have found themselves marooned and completely under siege as the corrupt local governing structure takes charge. These are a group of monsters who are not ready to let it go as they are always ready to destroy quite several lives in an attempt to safeguard their interests. They are the ones who currently give direction on whom to appoint where and how meaning that the network is a powerful governing system in itself. That’s why any breach of their self-laid down regulations is brutally dealt in the form of death or permanent disappearance. The local citizens hailing from the many counties in Kenya are equally terrified as well helpless to an extend that confronting the monster has never been easy. They simply don’t have any capacity to question such a status quo where their lives are value less and at the same time self- regarded depending on which side of the bed one is lying on. Kenyans are getting used to a situation where the powerful network can get away with anything a scenario which has forced a section of citizens to take the laws of the land into their hands in retaliation. To be associated with the corrupt network is a gate way for survival because one can be guaranteed certain favors right from jobs to illicit tenders where billions of the tax money can easily be kept hidden outside the public domain. These are a people who knows when to be innocent and when to be declared guilty of any wrong doings. Two years even before they commit any form of violent activities like murder as well as economic crimes, they can easily confront the courts for any anticipatory bail. To them time is such a crucial factor since they are also dealing with
  • 13. a restless public whose anger and hopeless can also be dealt with either through handouts or just malicious fears. The corrupt bandwagons are well versed with the moods of the Kenyan public meaning that they can dictate their terms and conditions. An ordinary Kenyan remains terrified whenever the corrupt cartels come calling since these are a people who don’t value life. They have currently taken charge of the entire governing structure operating in nearly all the counties where the rule of law had long been erased. To stamp their authorities, those already tainted with the corrupt blood seemed to have become daring to an extent that even the governor of a county has to adhere to their norms. That’s why innocent Kenyans have found themselves cornered with the end results being found dumped either helpless, headless or dead in whichever fashionable or unfashionable manner. The reality on the ground is that counties or devolved governing structures have a safe haven for the corrupt generation to operate with ease. They even dictate how jobs are distributed and again based on clans, the number of concubines and other closest associates. Getting jobs in counties is almost like a death trap since there are certain norms and regulations mostly dictated by the powerful terror family networks which must be seen visible on their foreheads at all times. The governor of any county is mostly forced to tore the line or if not so embrace the corrupt comrade network since they are ruthless, daring and always ready to part with several lives. Their bold modus operandi means that they know how to make judicial system be on their favor, also when to reject any legal rulings not suitable to them and also how to suffocate the complete law of the land. Families are disowning their own and the unruly young ones have even turned against their parents since everyone wants shortcuts which they believe can easily be earned in a brutal way without even blinking an eye. The younger generation seems to have been told that the only way out for one to accomplish big dreams is not just hard work but faking everything till the dreams come true and indeed they
  • 14. are out with all their wings wide open. That’s why for the first time in the history of Kenya the young primary school children have to engage in exam malpractices just to gain the much needed success because that’s what they have seen emerging from the society where they were born. The after math of corruption in Kenya and its impact means that a section of the local population is bound to suffer for the rest of their lives. It is such a network which thrives on disorder, deceit and at times deep secrecy given the billions of the tax payers that continue to exchange hands on daily basis. The best brains whether legal, social, political and even economics seems to have no chance of thriving side by side the much tainted blood cartel. That’s why immediately after Kenya was declared a sovereign state, a red line was immediately drawn between the corrupt and those perceived to be in bed with justice and the rule of law. The country would later find itself in the middle of bloodbath where Kenyans claiming to be on the right side of the bed have always traded barbs with their corrupt counterparts. Each side has a claim which according to them is a right which they believe can pull Kenyan out of the thickets but that has been happening with such a huge prize to pay. It is in that passionate blood bath where since independence Kenya has lost the best brains because a section of the population is just not ready let the country breath. It has been a painful torturous ordeal for the right minded Kenyans who have been forced to run away for their dear lives as the most corrupt generation of the East African society takes charge. This is a generation which is quite brutal and extremely daring with an operation which is carried out both in broad day light and under the cover the darkness. It is now a common scenario where immediately the sunrise hit the Kenyan landscape and shortly before or after sunset, some billions of money is supposed to have been snatched from the jaws of the public; also anyone daring to question their modus operandi is supposed to be administered with one final doze never to see the light of the day for the
  • 15. rest of the remaining lives on earth. That’s why the majority of Kenyans are often terrified by the mentioning of the word corruption because it is a term which reminds them of a close associate lost in the line of duty or a parcel of land forcefully grabbed from the helpless occupants or one simply disappears from the public domain never to be seen under the sun. Those committing such atrocities are just ordinary Kenyans with brainy ideas but somewhere down the line, their lives got influenced by extreme appetite for both blood, wealth and fame. Their terms and conditions for survival have scared many to death to an extend that the majority of Kenyans seemed to have surrendered to their fate. It is now a free for all grabbing spree where only the lucky ones’ can be blessed to carry the day. In other social and religious gatherings, the corrupt Kenyans have to display such a rare kind of humility where even the hidden gestures are supposed to come out a live but deep inside their hearts sleeps the most lethal monster. Any Kenyan caught up in the midst of the mess and even paraded before the public in the name of facing the law of the land is often described as a coward who never acted smart and at that time can even taste the wrath of the public. The language now quite synonymous with the general population is that anyone caught with a million Kenyan shillings or less is deemed to have miserably failed flat in their line of duty since their counter parts who just snatched a billion from the public coffers are even threatening anyone to dare confront them in the name of the upholding the rule of law or anything called human rights abuses are almost like electric and cannot be touched. The language evolving around corruption in Kenya is just quite disheartening since the monster is no longer a calamity or a tragedy but a way of life. As such whenever the beast comes roaring, the language has always been twisted by comrades in blood to make it appear like almost every Kenyan has had a bite of the cake despite the sugary taste. It is very easy for the members from the corrupt to gang up whenever cornered and together with the best legal minds in their midst, they often meander safely to the dry land. The war against corruption had long
  • 16. stalled since vulnerable Kenyans have now been forced to squire it among themselves along ethnic lines. Handlers of corrupt network are aware that for them to always win the game, they have to involve the helpless Kenyan population who seemed to have been hit hard by the deadly cancer. These are the ordinary citizens whose lives have been twisted by the corrupt deals prevalent throughout the country but to a larger extent they too cannot just sit back and watch as one of their own is being lynched in the court of public opinion as a result of the menace. Corruption is a government in itself going by the manner in which it has penetrated in almost every soul of the existing Kenyan population. That’s why those mandated to ensure that corruption network prevails and none of their members touched in anyway, have always had a permanent smile day in and day out. Their narrow escape route remains one of the safest ever, a path which the ordinary Kenyans can dare trespass. It is the reason why the numerous attempts to ensure that corruption becomes deeply connected with the majority of Kenyans DNA has always succeeded much to the chagrin of a section of the population. The menace is like a lethal sword which is always ready to chop off any protruding head that might attempt to block its bloody tainted path. The fact that deep inside the minds of every Kenyan there is already existence of the dragon is a clear demonstration of extreme fear before the nation. Any protruding heads in the country claiming to be the champions of change have literary been forced to eat an ample pie after witnessing the brutal circumstances which have sealed the fate of their peers. Merchants of the menace had long come to the realization that the best way to permanently deal with any disquiet voice challenging their status quo is kidnapping, murder and permanent disappearance where one shall never be traced nor recovered for the rest of their lives. The rivers, bushes, open pit latrines and even water boreholes had long been identified as the best places where such vulnerable victims are always dumped either dead or alive. For the many journeys or milestones Kenya has made as a nation,
  • 17. that has been the trend with the corrupt network family union always carrying the day with or without the existence of justice in the court of law. These merchants had long grouped themselves as self-declared lethal group whose motives are to ensure that the country Kenya doesn’t meet all her obligations in terms of order, upholding the rule of law and at the same dismembering any unit which are meant to glue Kenyans as one family of nations. That’s why an innocent Kenyan child instead of tirelessly burning the midnight oil for the benefit of a brighter future is already investing their energy in quest of shortcuts to remain relevant in an already polluted or polarized world. According to these vulnerable youngsters, success must just come their way. Unfortunately, that’s the art which had long been perfected from the top hierarchy of the Kenyan family to leadership downwards something which has literary boosted a disconnect between the Kenyan citizen and their values. Kenyans now have quite some unpredictable strange habits which even despite acquiring the best education so far under the sun, may never be erased in their minds and souls. That’s why poverty, ignorance and disease has found a fertile ground to spread indiscriminately and unsparing since the soil had long been tilt and made ready for the three menace to grow. It is at this juncture that the best brains in Kenya are also crying foul over the menace which they now categorized as the incoming anaconda with the ability to swallow almost everyone in the country. With the nation and Kenyans under siege and almost at a loss of the next safe exit in attempt to escape the onslaught from the dragon, there has been numerous cries for revolution, to carry out with life on self-defense mode, cessation and open lethargy all emanating from a section of population in the country across board. Another section of the population appears to have given up and could hardly see anything wrong with the country since according to them the nation has been up for grabs from the ancient times. These are the adamant Kenyans who are indirectly in love and bedding with the members of the cartel. They are the ones who believe that whoever is caught looting the public coffers is supposed to have made away with
  • 18. something huge and such apprehension is just luck gone bad. They can also be condemned by their peers the general public for having gone for small things which even when apprehended they may not manage to buy their way out. The last conversation one would hear from these Kenyans is that since Kenya is almost up for grabs with very little mercy for the sovereign state, every piece of the nation must just be placed on a table for a large bite. That’s why whenever the word corruption is widely talked about, Kenyans have always approached it differently with both cries and joy in equal measure. The corrupt are condemned or cursed overwhelmingly but they are also members of the Kenyan family and a people who ought to be given chance to defend themselves for the rest of their lives. The curse is a heavy yoke which has proved to be quite overwhelming among Kenyans of goodwill but at the same time remained to be a golden stone which must just be embraced and kept underneath for the next generation. The interesting bit is that Kenyans can unanimously shed tears over corruption going by the manner in which the ruthless dragon has shattered the dreams of many in the country but everyone would immediately rush to their hideouts only to emerge with different heads altogether. That’s after Kenyans have sobered up and come to the point that they were just about to lynch one of their own for no apparent reason at all. There is a lot of emotional attachment to whoever is believed to have bitten the goodies of corruption a scenario which involves the ordinary citizens whose mindset had long been twisted by the menace. These are the people who are not ready to have another line of thought on the menace despite the negative impact of the dragon in their lives. The best legal minds in the country have been forced to come forward in defense of corruption and its elements because that’s the next big deal in a country described as the next Africa’s power house. Another concerned legal minds who seemed to be battling the cancer from within are at times forced to give way since because of the deadly numerous challenges they
  • 19. see before them and their families. That’s why several sectors of the country’s economy have been sinking at an alarming rate especially now that corruption has become a devolved governing system lazed with dire consequences. There has been such a struggle for the Kenyan nation in an attempt to skip and jump but the hurdles have remained quite a challenge because of the numerous road blocks manned by the corrupt indigenous citizens. These are the people who from the sixties contributed to the collapse of several manufacturing industries in the country to agricultural produce to an extend that a whole healthy nation is forced to import basic items like sugar and maize. This is something done without shame and courtesy since the local population have found themselves held hostage by the self-engineered or man-made ignorance and fear. These Kenyans have been told that by consuming items like sugar, coffee and maize from across the borders could be just due to several unavoidable circumstances. The agitated or concerned Kenyans have often been reminded that the current world is more less a global village hence there is likely to be influx of goods from different parts of the world into the country. That’s why the poorest Kenyans today are farmers whose produce had long been interfered with by local gangs whose interests are extremely selfish, dangerous and out of touch with the reality on the ground. As such Kenyans are now suffering but their eyes are still blurred and at the same time darkened by the sweet flavors which again comes to them in plenty from the proprietors of the deadly curse.
