Editor's Notes
Only really shows girls being the vulnerable victim in the trailer, rather than showing any men. The men shown in the trailer tend to be the people with the knowledge and of a higher power.Slasher films always tend to have a group of people surviving against a single serial killer, with only one surviving towards the end. It’s known that most horror films do take at night more often than not as they generate more fear from the audience, as that is what the main goal of a horror film is.
The majority of slasher films only take place in a certain area, such as a large house or school. Making it take place in one area gives the audience a sense of being trapped, playing with the fear of claustrophobia.Nearly all slasher films and horror films in general use night as their main setting and remote or abandoned areas and gives the audience the feeling that nobody will be able to help them.Like with scream, the victims in the trailer shown, are woman, again stereotyping them as vulnerable and defenceless. The killer is also shown to having a signature style in how he actually kills his victims, which can also be seen in film like nightmare on elm street.
Like in the previous examples, gender seems to be a big part of the slasher sub-genre. Even though in this trailer they show male victims as well as females, the male victims seem to be stronger. Whereas the females are seen to be vulnerable and running away from the danger. The trailer follows the convention of showing the serial killer with a distinct killer style which, in the case, is using a pick axe. We also see that they have a mask to cover their face. This is seen in multiple horror films with a slasher sub-genre. Some of the places in the trailer are seen to be dark, conforming with the convention that horror films take place at night.
The male in the trailer is seen as the powerful character, whereas the female is the venerable one. Conforms to the damsel in distress type situation. The trailer is going to be set at night in an abandoned area. This is following the standard convention of horror films being set in a remote area at night to play on the audiences fears. The killer in the trailer will follow the basic premise of what the killer is going to act like. But unlike other slasher films which have their killer dressed in a unique way, he is going to look like a normal person. This is trying to create the sense that you shouldn’t judge what someone is going to be like based on a first impression.Slasher films and horror films in general try to show the audience something they will be scared about. This trailer will try to play on certain fears such as the dark to get the audience scared and possibly interested.
