of teaching and classroom resources
and ideas!
161. Stand up sit down
Say sentences in the
target language.
Students sit down
when the sentence
applies to them.
E.G. J’ai les yeux
bleus.
162. Find the treasure
Use the PowerPoint
below. In two teams, ask
students questions
about the current topic.
If they get a question
right a box disappears
and they gain 1 point,
for every coin they find
they gain 3 points.
163. Trivial Pursuit
Each colour represents a
topic. Students have to
talk about that topic for a
certain amount of time. If
they manage it they can
colour in one of the
triangles.
164. Wordle (1)
Students type up their
written work onto the
website below.
Repeated words will
be bigger than others.
Good for GCSE.
*Apparently if you put a tilde in
between two words it keeps them
together.
165. Wordle (2)
Type in a list of
vocabulary such
as adjectives to
describe people.
They have to
underline in red,
words to describe
their mum etc.
166. Wordle (3)
Type in a list of
words from a
speaking activity.
Get the students
to listen to the
text and number
the words when
they hear them.
*Include words which
aren’t there as well.
168. Hot Seat
One student sits on the ‘hot seat’ and the rest
of the class asks them questions relating to
today’s lesson. If they get a question wrong they
must sit back in their own seat.
169. Peg Verbs
Buy some wooden pegs and
write the verb conjugations
on them. Students have to
match the correct peg to the
correct section on the card.
170. MFL All Around You
Quite a different
homework. Could be used
at start of school year. Find
6 French/Spanish items in
your town – food,
instructions, menu,
anything and write about
it.
171. Take A Number
Put a ribbon in your
room with numbered
pegs on. Students take a
peg if they need help/to
speak to you, instead of
queuing or keeping their
hands up.
172. Absent
Always do enough
worksheets for the class. If a
student is absent put it in
that class’ folder in a box in
the room. It can be students’
responsibility to check this
box when they come back
next lesson.
173. Tree of Knowledge
A tree is drawn on a sheet of paper/the board.
Each pupil has a leaf shaped piece of paper. On
it they write as briefly as possible what has
been the most important thing they have learnt
in the lesson – preferably one word. Pupils stick
their leaves on the tree and say what is on the
leaf.
175. Spider Web
Think of one sentence using the
vocabulary you have learnt today. Use a
ball of string/ribbon. Students stand in a
circle and take it in turn to say their
sentence and hold the string, making a
web around the room.
176. Gimme 5
In the backs of your books. Write down five
questions which will test your understanding of
what you have learnt in today’s lesson. Answer
these questions at the start of next lesson/for
homework.
177. Finger Spelling
In pairs students use
their finger to draw a
word in the TL on
their partner’s back.
Their partner has to
guess the word.
178. Be The Teacher
Pretend you are a primary school teacher.
How would you teach what you have learnt today
to a primary school student? Discuss with your
partner.
179. Memory Master
Write a list of words in the target
language on the board. Pupils are
given a minute to remember the
list. When time is up, remove the
words. Pupils have to write out
the translations of terms,
remembering as many as they
can, in a specified time.
180. Soft Ball
A soft ball is thrown from one
pupil to another named pupil
in class. Pupil says one
concept/key word - next one
explains it then chooses
another.
181. Joggers
All students stand up
and jog on the spot –
they can only sit down
once you have been
given 3, 5, 7… etc.
things that they have
learned during the
lesson.
182. Fireworks
Students stand up quickly
and shout out something
they have learned during the
lesson, then sit down again
fast. Ask for 3, 5, 7…etc.
fireworks before leaving the
room.
183. Bang!
Make a ‘bang’ tin with words in. Could be a
good idea if some students finish work early. If
the student can say the word correctly in the
other language they keep the card if not it goes
back in. If they get a BANG card, all of their cards
go back in.
French Bang
Spanish Bang
184. Question Cards
Question cards to promote independent
learning
Each group has four cards. If they want to ask a
question they lose a card. Group with the most
cards at end of lesson wins sweets.

ICT Ideas
Click link above for more useful ideas
for embedding ICT into MFL lessons.

and key vocabulary sheets. Encourage students
to look in here before asking you questions.
French - Improving Your Work
Spanish - Improving Your Work

have to find one word from each category
using the dictionary to help them.
French Scattegories
203. Question Tin
Make a question tin and add questions to it
throughout the year. Good way of recapping
previous topics as you can do it as a starter
activity each lesson. Student picks a question
and answers it/chooses someone else to answer.
204. Plenary Questions
What if we hadn’t
done today’s
lesson?
What if you weren’t
allowed to know
what we’ve learnt
today?
What other
vocabulary do you
think you would
need to learn to
be able to talk
about this topic?
What have you found
easy in this lesson?
What have you found
challenging in this
lesson?
What have you done
well this lesson?
What could you
improve on next
time?
205. Blogger
Example
Blogging Tips
Create your own languages
blog which the students can
use in their own time. Make
QR code of this and give to
them to stick in their books
for the year.
206. Blogging Tips
Upload PowerPoints used
in the lesson to SlideShare,
these can then be
embedded into your blog
for students to see in their
own time.
See my blog for examples:
Example
207. Blogging Tips
Include a list of links they can
access at home.
Embed games and flashcards
(a lot of which were
mentioned in this PowerPoint)
into the blog.

How to make them: http://www.dltk-kids.com/world/japan/mfortune-teller.htm
Students guess the correct ending and move to next sentence if they get it correct. If not it moves to the next student who has to start at the beginning.
http://www.puzzle-maker.com/CW/Differentiation: provide lower ability students with the missing words, they just have to decide what goes where.Depending on ability of students you could choose whether or not to write the clues in the target language.
You could give students the words cut out and 3 pots with adjectives, verbs, nouns written on them and they have to put the words in the correct pots.Give each pupil a word, have a noun, a verb and an adjective wall and the pupils have to go to the correct wall.
Lower ability students may need assistance/pointing in the right direction.
http://tools.atozteacherstuff.com/word-search-maker/wordsearch.phpDifferentiation: for H.A. give them the words in English or give them clues instead
Differentiation: Cut up into larger chunks for L.A. students or even smaller for H.A. students. If they find it too challenging, read the text aloud.

If you have the time (?!) you could make your own traffic light cards.I laminated and cut up red, orange and green card into squares then attached them together using split rings (cheap on Amazon)
Choose students to read theirs out in front of the class. Other students can assess them using 2 stars and a wish.
Choose students to perform in front of the class. Other students can assess them using 2 stars and a wish.
Differentiation: provide low ability students with the vocabulary, they just have to put the words in the correct order. If higher ability finish the first time round ask them to write sentences using the words.
Differentiation: provide lower ability students with the words and their meanings. Higher ability students could attempt to do it from memory.
This is good for showing progress throughout the lesson. If the scores are lower at the end of the lesson, that means they’ve learnt something.
