Sit ‘n’ Spin
Great idea – taken from Pinterest
Trapdoor
Student has to read through guessing the
correct answer. If they get it right they carry on.
If they get it wrong someone else ha to have a
go but start from the beginning. Lots of
repetition – great for listening skills. First one to
the end wins a prize.
Darts
Bought from the 99p Store. I use as a plenary. If
students get the question right they can throw
the dart. Group with the most points wins. A
good one for the boys.
Adjectives
Nice idea when learning adjectives. Students
could do this for homework.
Adjectives (2)
Another good idea when covering adjectives.
Take photo to stick in their books.
Creative Descriptions
Fun way of presenting a piece of writing.
Guess Who
PowerPoint with celebrities’ names translated
into French. Students use a dictionary to help
them figure out who the person is.
e.g. prendre ça = Take That

French - Who am I?
Challenge Capsules
Make tubs with challenges for early finishers.
(You can get about 8 of these tubs in 99p
Store/Poundland)
Guess The Song
A nice starter activity. My students love this one.
PowerPoint with English song titles translated
into Spanish and they have to guess the English.
Spanish Guess The Song
Number Flashcards
Write some random numbers (including
negatives) on the board and stick
flashcards over them. Students are in
teams, they tell you a phrase, you take off
the flashcard and that is the number of
points they get.
Question Chairs
Hide Common Core questions under their
seat and announce 'hot seat' sometime
during the day. Whoever has a question
under their seat has to answer it.
Guess the Word
Everybody standing up. Write a word on a
whiteboard and students have to guess what it
is and write it on their own. They reveal their
boards then teacher reveals theirs. If they have
matched, they can sit down. If not, they rub off
their word and start again.
Phrase of the Week
Give students a word/phrase of the week. If
they use it correctly in context they win a raffle
ticket. One of these is picked out at the end of
each week and this student wins a lolly.

Map speaking activity
Good for talking about places in town, directions
and prepositions. In pairs students have a
different map each and a copy of their partner’s
with some places missing which they have to fill
in by listening to their partner’s
description/asking questions.
Radio App
Download the TuneIn radio app. Click 'By Location' >
Europe > France/Spain then choose either the type of
music (genre) you want to listen to or the area in
France or Spain.

Passez la bombe
Buy a kitchen timer and put it in a
small black box. Put the timer in
the box. When you play, set the
timer for between 1-2 mins, put
into box and say a question you've
covered recently which can have
many different answers. Pass the
bomb to first pupil, who can pass it
on when they've said an answer.
Whoever is holding the bomb
when it goes off has to do a forfeit.
4 Chairs
4 chairs at the front of the class. The rest of class
must ask each in turn a question. If they are

students can easily update or can be
discussed as a starter activity.
Knocking Out Teeth
Divide the class into two teams. Ask individual team
members questions. Draw two big mouths on the
whiteboard, giving each about 8 teeth. If they get it
RIGHT, you erase one tooth from the OPPONENTS
mouth.

Other suggestions:
• Draw sweets and take them away
• Eat up each others’ apples, bananas, ice-creams, etc.
• Draw a person for each; then, with each mistake they make, draw a part of
something around them; if they lose, they end up with a large monster’s mouth
swallowing them.

Similar to previous. One volunteer to leave the room. Rest of
class agree on answers. The volunteer comes back in and
begins to read and guesses a/b/c. If correct he continues. If
incorrect he must go back to the beginning and guess again.
Every time the volunteer gets the answer wrong, he must go

the link below.
Students can use
these to practise
vocabulary and
then play the
games.
Splat the teacher
Use the PowerPoint
below. In two teams
students answer
questions about the
current topic. If they get it
right they can ‘splat the
teacher’. The team with
the most ‘splats’ wins.
Dictionary Race
In pairs, teacher gives pupils the first word in
English to find in the dictionary. They must write
it down and take it to show the teacher. If it is
correct the teacher will then give them the next
word on the list. The first team to find all ten
words wins!
Sporcle
Create your own
Sporcle language
games. Students
have to type
answers in a
limited amount of
time.
Unscramble
Write scrambled words/sentences on
the board. Students have to rewrite
them in the correct order.
Voki
Students create their
own animated avatar,
type text in the target
language and select the
appropriate language.
Pupils can then listen to
their text and practise
pronunciation.
Dice verb endings
In pairs, students are given a
verb and have to roll the dice
and say and write their
conjugations. The first one with
all six wins.
HABLAR
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

an
Class sentence
Going around the room, each student
has to say a word making up a
sentence/story.
Consequences
In pairs, take it in turns to write answers for the following,
then fold the paper to create a story in the target
language. Choose some pairs to read out their story.
1. Man’s name
2. Woman’s name
3. Where they met
4. He said
5. She said
6. Where they went
7. What they did
Wallwisher
Students double click
on the board and
write their own
sentences.
MFL Songs and Videos
Spanish
French

Pinterest can also be a good source
of teaching and classroom resources
and ideas!
Stand up sit down
Say sentences in the
target language.
Students sit down
when the sentence
applies to them.
E.G. J’ai les yeux
bleus.
Find the treasure
Use the PowerPoint
below. In two teams, ask
students questions
about the current topic.
If they get a question
right a box disappears
and they gain 1 point,
for every coin they find
they gain 3 points.
Trivial Pursuit
Each colour represents a
topic. Students have to
talk about that topic for a
certain amount of time. If
they manage it they can
colour in one of the
triangles.
Wordle (1)
Students type up their
written work onto the
website below.
Repeated words will
be bigger than others.
Good for GCSE.
*Apparently if you put a tilde in
between two words it keeps them
together.
Wordle (2)
Type in a list of
vocabulary such
as adjectives to
describe people.
They have to
underline in red,
words to describe
their mum etc.
Wordle (3)
Type in a list of
words from a
speaking activity.
Get the students
to listen to the
text and number
the words when
they hear them.
*Include words which
aren’t there as well.
Tagxedo
Similar to Wordle.
Not used it much
yet but looks like
it may be better!
Hot Seat
One student sits on the ‘hot seat’ and the rest
of the class asks them questions relating to
today’s lesson. If they get a question wrong they
must sit back in their own seat.
Peg Verbs
Buy some wooden pegs and
write the verb conjugations
on them. Students have to
match the correct peg to the
correct section on the card.
MFL All Around You
Quite a different
homework. Could be used
at start of school year. Find
6 French/Spanish items in
your town – food,
instructions, menu,
anything and write about
it.
Take A Number
Put a ribbon in your
room with numbered
pegs on. Students take a
peg if they need help/to
speak to you, instead of
queuing or keeping their
hands up.
Absent
Always do enough
worksheets for the class. If a
student is absent put it in
that class’ folder in a box in
the room. It can be students’
responsibility to check this
box when they come back
next lesson.
Tree of Knowledge
A tree is drawn on a sheet of paper/the board.
Each pupil has a leaf shaped piece of paper. On
it they write as briefly as possible what has
been the most important thing they have learnt
in the lesson – preferably one word. Pupils stick
their leaves on the tree and say what is on the
leaf.
Class Tools
Create your own
games at
Class Tools
Spider Web
Think of one sentence using the
vocabulary you have learnt today. Use a
ball of string/ribbon. Students stand in a
circle and take it in turn to say their
sentence and hold the string, making a
web around the room.
Gimme 5
In the backs of your books. Write down five
questions which will test your understanding of
what you have learnt in today’s lesson. Answer
these questions at the start of next lesson/for
homework.
Finger Spelling
In pairs students use
their finger to draw a
word in the TL on
their partner’s back.
Their partner has to
guess the word.
Be The Teacher

Pretend you are a primary school teacher.
How would you teach what you have learnt today
to a primary school student? Discuss with your
partner.
Memory Master
Write a list of words in the target
language on the board. Pupils are
given a minute to remember the
list. When time is up, remove the
words. Pupils have to write out
the translations of terms,
remembering as many as they
can, in a specified time.
Soft Ball
A soft ball is thrown from one
pupil to another named pupil
in class. Pupil says one
concept/key word - next one
explains it then chooses
another.
Joggers
All students stand up
and jog on the spot –
they can only sit down
once you have been
given 3, 5, 7… etc.
things that they have
learned during the
lesson.
Fireworks
Students stand up quickly
and shout out something
they have learned during the
lesson, then sit down again
fast. Ask for 3, 5, 7…etc.
fireworks before leaving the
room.
Bang!
Make a ‘bang’ tin with words in. Could be a
good idea if some students finish work early. If
the student can say the word correctly in the
other language they keep the card if not it goes
back in. If they get a BANG card, all of their cards
go back in.
French Bang
Spanish Bang
Question Cards
Question cards to promote independent
learning
Each group has four cards. If they want to ask a
question they lose a card. Group with the most
cards at end of lesson wins sweets.
Uses of ICT
ICT Ideas
Click link above for more useful ideas
for embedding ICT into MFL lessons.
Dominoes
Make vocab domino cards for students to match
up.
Example
Independent Learning Folders
Create a folder which has explanations of tenses
and key vocabulary sheets. Encourage students
to look in here before asking you questions.
French - Improving Your Work
Spanish - Improving Your Work
4 Pictures 1 Word
Students guess the word by looking at the four images
and the jumbled up letters below. PowerPoint game
based on the popular app. Nice starter activity!
KS3 Spanish: 4 Pictures 1 Word
KS3 French - 4 Pictures 1 Word
Popcorn
A different way of presenting questions/tasks.
Students choose their own.
Who am I?
Students are given cards with objects/people on
them and they have to guess what they are by
asking their teammates questions.
Creative Writing
This one could be useful when learning the
conditional.
Spot the Difference
Presenting Vocabulary
Would look great in their books.
Discussion Prompts
Lots of these on Pinterest. Ones on
this page could be good when
introducing Technology topic.
Colours
A creative way of presenting colours.
Speaking in the Target
Language
Each group are given one of these and lose a
number every time they speak English. One with
most at the end wins a prize.
Synonyms
Could be adapted for MFL. Students use
dictionary to find synonyms of common words.
Student Feedback
Students feedback which subjects they enjoyed.
MFL Displays
Displays
Categories
Could be used as a starter activity. Students
have to find one word from each category
using the dictionary to help them.
French Scattegories
Twitter Board
Writing About Yourself
Question Tin
Make a question tin and add questions to it
throughout the year. Good way of recapping
previous topics as you can do it as a starter
activity each lesson. Student picks a question
and answers it/chooses someone else to answer.
Plenary Questions
What if we hadn’t
done today’s
lesson?
What if you weren’t
allowed to know
what we’ve learnt
today?

What other
vocabulary do you
think you would
need to learn to
be able to talk
about this topic?

What have you found
easy in this lesson?

What have you found
challenging in this
lesson?

What have you done
well this lesson?

What could you
improve on next
time?
Blogger
Example

Blogging Tips

Create your own languages
blog which the students can
use in their own time. Make
QR code of this and give to
them to stick in their books
for the year.
Blogging Tips
Upload PowerPoints used
in the lesson to SlideShare,
these can then be
embedded into your blog
for students to see in their
own time.
See my blog for examples:
Example
Blogging Tips
Include a list of links they can
access at home.
Embed games and flashcards
(a lot of which were
mentioned in this PowerPoint)
into the blog.
