2. • The Great Union of 1918 was the historic
process in which all the historical provinces
have united in the same national state,
Romania. Preliminary stages were the Small
Union of 1859 of the country of Moldavia with
Wallachia and the acquisition of
independence after the war of 1877-1878.
• The unification of Bessarabia, Bukovina, and
eventually Transylvania with the Kingdom of
Romania (the so-called Old Kingdom) led to
the establishment of Great Romania.
4. • December 1, 1918 remains in the memory of the
Romanians as the day of the Great Union. "Our
flag is a written union", a century ago, it sounded
like the ideal of the Romanians, by the union that
would help create a common identity. Without
going into historical details to show the causes or
the context of this event, we will reproduce
some ideas from King Ferdinand I's speech
announcing the territorial unification of all
Romanians: "We can look with confidence in the
future, for the foundations are strong, based on
democratic principles are a pledge for the natural
development of a healthy life, they are cemented
by the unbroken faith of a whole generation of
generations, the apostles of the national ideal. "
5. • After the union, the meanders of history led to the Second World War
from which Romania defeated.
• The monarchic regime, which had brought Romania to evolution, was
changed by the communist totalitarian regime.
• Without knowing a middle way, Romania has passed, for the most
part, this century through an authoritarian regime.
• The union became forced or censored, optimism was replaced by
terror, the struggle for a common ideal turned into exile, and
free expression became denial.
• After Union, Great Romania goes through a confrontation, since 1989
a democratic regime has been established without solid
bases and without clear principles.
• Democracy means, as is known, freedom. Freedom to be in the laws
and practices of social institutions?
• If freedom were to be measured in the number of citizens left out of
the country, we would be at the top of the list because a quarter
of the Romanians are today in the diaspora.
